Ziad feeling all pumped up for U-23 tourney after solid win over Melaka

The Star09-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: National Under-23 midfielder Ziad El-Basheer Norhisham is brimming with pride and purpose as he gears up for the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-23 Championship in Indonesia from July 15 to 29.
Fresh from a spirited training camp and a morale-boosting 4-1 victory over Malaysia's Super League side Melaka at the Cheras Football Stadium on Tuesday, the 21-year-old believes the squad are ready to make a strong statement in Surabaya.
'We've shown that we can bring this kind of spirit to Indonesia,' said the Johor Darul Ta'zim II player.
'We played well, beat a Super League team, and hopefully this momentum will carry us through the tournament.'
While the preparation window was short, Ziad insists the team's unity has helped them gel quickly, something he attributes to the atmosphere created by both players and coaching staff.
'It feels like we've been in a long camp. The chemistry is strong and positive. We're close off the field, and on the field there are no issues.'
This will be Ziad's second AFF tournament, having previously represented Malaysia at the AFF Under-19 Championship – also held in Indonesia.
Coach Nafuzi Zain stressed that fitness is the top priority at this stage, adding that his squad are already showing sharper speed and movement.
'We know the real challenge will be much tougher than our current situation,' he said.
Malaysia kick off their Group A campaign against the Philippines on July 15, followed by Brunei on July 18, and wrap up the group stage with a showdown against hosts Indonesia on July 21.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on July 25, with the third-place playoff and final scheduled for July 29.

Revive Harimau Muda or risk falling behind, warns Kim Swee

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national youth coach Ong Kim Swee has urged the authorities to urgently revive the Harimau Muda programme, warning that Malaysia risks being overtaken by the likes of the Philippines, Cambodia and Laos if immediate action isn't taken. Kim Swee said the national youth setup — once a breeding ground for SEA Games and AFF Cup-winning talents — must be brought back to stop the Young Tigers from falling further behind their fast-improving Southeast Asian rivals. The Harimau Muda programme, launched by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) in 2007 and disbanded in 2015, produced back-to-back SEA Games gold medals in 2009 and 2011. Players from this system also formed the backbone of the Harimau Malaya squad that lifted the AFF Cup in 2010. "During the Harimau Muda era, our young players were more competitive," said Kim Swee, who led the squad from 2009 to 2014. "Now their only real platform is the Super League. Even in last season's MFL Cup, how many top young players emerged? "The youth players in the Super League hardly get any minutes. There's nothing wrong with bringing back Harimau Muda — we've already proven that it works." Kim Swee said: "Don't underestimate the Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia or Laos. "Look at what's happened in the last few years — how many times have we lost to the Philippines? "I'm not blaming anyone, but we need to ask how these countries have improved so quickly. "It's time to bring Harimau Muda back. Other countries may not have a similar setup, but they have strong grassroots systems at club level. Do we? "JDT have the right development structure, and Selangor are trying too. But what about the rest? "We've already lost to the Philippines. Don't be surprised if Cambodia, Laos — even Brunei — beat us next." His comments come after the Young Tigers failed to reach the semi-finals of the recent Under-23 Asean Championship, crashing out in the group stage following a 2-0 loss to the Philippines, a 7-1 win over Brunei and a goalless draw with hosts Indonesia. The early exit has sparked concerns ahead of tougher assignments — the Under-23 Asian Cup qualifiers and the SEA Games later this year. FAM president Datuk Joehari Ayub said any revival of the Harimau Muda setup would depend on the national body's budget. Kim Swee, however, stressed that a centralised youth system gives both players and coaches the structure and time needed to build a competitive team. "When you call up players from different clubs, you only get between two to 10 days with them during FIFA windows — it's just not enough," he said. "Even if they understand tactics, team chemistry takes time to develop. "But with a centralised squad like Harimau Muda, we trained together for six months in Slovakia before returning for the SEA Games, and we won. "We didn't just win — we beat Italy at the World University Games. Imagine that — beating a footballing nation like Italy."

Kelantan Red Warriors deny link to Kelantan FC amid FIFA probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Kelantan Red Warriors (KRW) president Nik Hafiz Naim Nik Hassan has insisted that his club are a separate entity and not a sporting successor to Kelantan FC, who are facing action from FIFA over unpaid wages. Nik Hafiz told Timesport that KRW submitted a full explanation to FIFA on Saturday — two days before Monday's deadline — in response to a show-cause letter from world football's governing body. "The complainant claimed that KRW and Kelantan FC are the same club under sporting succession — that is completely untrue," said Nik Hafiz. "Kelantan FC are 76 years old. We're not even a year old. We've never claimed their history, titles or records. We are a new club — full stop." FIFA's Legal Handbook sets out criteria to determine sporting succession, including similar headquarters, name, legal form, colours, players, ownership, and competition level. KRW do share the "Red Warriors" name and red-and-white colours with Kelantan FC, but Nik Hafiz insisted these are linked to Kelantan's state identity, not the previous club. "The name 'Red Warriors' belongs to the people of Kelantan. It's used in other sports like sepak takraw. The colours come from our state flag. It's about real warriors — not branding," he said. He admitted to being a former director at Kelantan FC but stressed he had cut ties before establishing KRW. "Yes, I was a director, but I resigned before forming KRW. There is no connection. Kelantan FC remain under Zamsaham (Norizam Tukiman). If they return to the league, they'll do so under that structure. We have a different licence." The issue echoes the Melaka United-Melaka FC case, where the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that the latter could not be held responsible as a sporting successor due to legal and operational separation. That ruling could prove pivotal if FIFA moves to determine KRW's status using the same criteria. Nik Hafiz said KRW are now waiting for FIFA's response and will consult the FA of Malaysia (FAM) and Amateur Football League (AFL) on the next steps. Despite the uncertainty, KRW are continuing preparations for Tuesday's friendly against Terengganu at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium. "We're fully ready. Coach Irfan Bakti has done an excellent job and we're targeting Super League promotion," said Nik Hafiz. "To our fans — please be patient. This is a challenge, but we'll get through it together."

Rhinos brush aside DPMM

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Coach Alto (left) and Daniel Ting (in red) tries to escape his marker during the match against DPMM FC. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC brushed aside DPMM FC from Brunei 3-1 in their latest pre-season friendly at Likas Stadium on Saturday. They took a 2-0 lead at half time against this season's Super League newcomers with goals from Daniel Ting in the 11th minute and Miguel Angel Garrido Cifuentes in the 31st minute. Daniel added his second in the 71st minute before the visitors reduced the deficit late in the match. It was also the third pre-season match for Sabah FC following the 2-8 thrashing by Thailand top club Buriram United in the Asean Charity Shield match held two weeks ago in Thailand preceded by the 4-0 win over another Brunei club side Kasuka FC a week earlier at Likas Stadium. Coach Alto Linus was happy with the progress of the players following the big win. 'It was a good result from the team, but there are still several aspects of our game that need to be improved before the start of the new league season. 'I am satisfied with the overall performance of all the players, including the substitutes who came in the second half. 'This friendly was to strengthen the team's match fitness before the league begins in early August and I want to see the players are fully prepared and able to maintain their consistency to get positive results in every match,' he said. Meanwhile, the Rhinos are set to play more friendly matches before the opening match in the new season against Melaka FC at Likas Stadium on August 10. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
