Beautiful but hidden beach just minutes from Barcelona tourists can never find

Daily Mirror15-05-2025

Avoid the droves of bustling crowds with this pristine beach - located just 15 minutes away from one of Barcelona's busiest hotpots - that has been described by one local as the 'perfect escape'
A local has revealed the 'perfect' escape from Spain's bustling beaches that most tourists struggle to find. Renowned for its Gaudí architecture, ubiquitous history, and fancy rooftop cocktail bars - Barcelona, located in Spain's Catalonia region, has long been a tourist hotspot.
Last year, a staggering 15.6 million tourists flocked to cosmopolitan city, to soak up the sun and pretend they're suddenly art and history connoisseurs. It's a 100,000 decrease compared to 2023 overnight figures, but still means finding a beach where you're not rubbing shoulders with a complete stranger an almost impossible feat.

Playa de Bogatell is a popular spot for sun-worshipping Brits, boasting sugar-like sands, cobalt waters, and a slew of sea-view eateries. However, in the peak seasons - the stretch of sand can become insufferably crowded.

Luckily, TikTok channel Explorebarcelona explained that just a stone's throw from the busy beach lies a stunning shore that has somehow managed to escape the tourist limelight. "Most tourists will never find this place, but most locals know it's the perfect escape," the account said.
"Tired of crowded beaches, and overpriced drinks? Just walk 15 minutes further and you will find Platja Nova Mar Bella, a hidden gem where locals actually relax. [There are] no vendors, no noise, just clean sand, clear water, and space to breathe."
On TripAdvisor, Platja Nova Mar Bella has garnered hundreds of five-star reviews from impressed travellers."The sand was light coloured tan with no rocks and clean surroundings," one visitor hailed. "The drop off into the sea was substantial and with smooth rocks to walk into the water. Beverages were easily attained as were umbrellas to rent."

Another agreed, commenting: "[It's] quieter than beaches nearer the town. There are spacious toilets, bike racks to lock up rental bikes, and showers. It's a relaxed unintimidating beach for people of all ages and all shapes and sizes!"
A third added: "Very nice tapas bar in the middle of the beach, very nice sand and clean water. Very convenient and free parking," while a fourth penned: "The beach was closed to swimming because of high wind and surf conditions but that didn't stop us from dipping our feet in the water and enjoying the sun!"
However, others argued the beach's pristine reputation had already started to fade. One-star reviews complaining about 'aggressive' vendors and pickpockets have now started to tarnish the review site.
"The place is nice and clean," one person wrote. "The only downside is the shoppers. [They're] very aggressive and insistent... they had to be put back in their place vigorously."
Others pointed out the beach was actually a nudist beach, despite a lack of notice boards. Many have branded the beach a 'gay beach', as it tends to attract LGBTQ+ visitors.

Major European holiday destination opens e-gates to British travellers

UK holidaymakers will soon be able to skip long passport queues at a major European airport, thanks to a new UK-EU deal. Portugal will be the first country in the EU to allow UK passport holders to use e-gates after the deal was struck. The rollout will begin at Faro airport in the Algarve, just in time for the busy summer travel season. The Algarve region is one of the most popular holiday destinations for British holidaymakers, with millions of travellers passing through Faro airport last year. Since Brexit, UK passport holders have had to queue at manned border control desks to get their passports stamped when entering the Schengen area countries. But under a new agreement struck at a UK-EU summit in May, it was confirmed that there would be no legal barriers to UK travellers using e-gates. Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds confirmed the news in Parliament last week, saying: 'The historic deal that we signed with the EU on May 19 is in our national interests. 'Good for bills, borders and jobs. It slashes red tape and bureaucracy, boosts British exporters and makes life easier for holidaymakers.' The Prime Minister's official spokesman said that millions more Brits heading to the Algarve will be able to use the e-gates in time for summer holidays. He added: 'We're obviously continuing to work with other countries and other airports to ensure Brits can use more e-gates as soon as possible and that work continues.' Just last week, Portuguese media reported large queues at passport control at Faro airport, with delays of up to two hours. More Trending Last year, tourists were met with three-hour delays at Faro airport, due to e-gates reportedly not working. Pictures shared on social media showed travellers crammed in like sardines before passport control. The EU's Entry/Exit system (EES), expected to launch in October 2025, will eventually replace manual passport checks from non-member countries. According to the UK government website, when EES is introduced, travellers to the Schengen zone will need to create a digital record on their first arrival at the airport. It explains: 'If you are travelling to a country in the Schengen area using a UK passport, you will be required to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints or a photo, when you arrive.' Australian astounded after visiting UK as he says Brits are 'built differently'

An Australian who visited the UK said Brits are "built differently", and there's a key reason why. He was left astounded after stopping by as he ventured on a trip to Venice An Australian who visited the UK was left astounded when he touched down in the airport. Liam Dowling was left totally floored by one thing when he landed on British soil, and claimed there's a specific reason why Brits are "built differently" to other people around the world. Liam's video has gone viral after he shared it on TikTok and his explanation left people in total hysterics. In the clip, he admitted he was travelling to Venice, but stopped at an airport in the UK on his travels and, when he called by the Wetherspoons, he couldn't get over one thing. ‌ In the video, he said: "I'm here at the Spoons airport, on my way to Venice. It's 5am - there's not a single person in here not drinking. It's 5am. ‌ "I feel like in Aus, we kind of wait until like 7am/8am - you get some looks if you're drinking in the airport at 5am. No one here gives a f***. "I reckon you could come here at 4am, and it would not matter. Like, Britian just - they don't care. Maybe it's the Europe/Aus thing, but everyone here is boozing and I love it. Bit too early for me though, so, I'm just going to stick to my coffee." The video has been viewed over 100,000 times since it's been shared, and people have been left gobsmacked by it. Natually, some Brits just couldn't stop laughing. One said: "God forbid a nation has hobbies." Another wrote: "Time doesn't exist in the airport or on Christmas Day." ‌ A third replied: "I'm Polish (we're infamous for drinking a lot) and I have been living in the UK for 10 years, but even I can't hack how they do it. Brunch time, 11ish, I can get, but 5am is crazy business." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Got to a NY airport at 6am. Asked for a Bacardi and they said no alcohol til midday. I was gobsmacked." One more also quipped: "Spoons in Birmingham airport was absolutely rammed at 2am when I last went." ‌ People had all sorts of stories about drinking at airports, but many seemed to agree on one idea - time doesn't exist when you're about to hop on a plane. Many Brits couldn't help but laugh in the comments, with a cheeky pre-flight tipple appearing to be the norm for many - no matter what time it may be. Thoughts and theories were super varied, but many Brits couldn't help but make jokes about it. The video really did make many people chuckle. Another wrote: "If you think about it, 5am is just really late at night. 7am would be more unacceptable, as I consider that morning. Regardless of time though, if I'm at an airport, then I'm at Spoons drinking." One more added: "Every time I fly from Manchester Airport, I choose as early as I can 4am/5am, grab a burger and sit in the bar with a few pints and watch the planes until my gate opens. Like my father, and my father's father." Meanwhile, someone else chimed in with: "Time does not exist in airports. Except the time you've got to catch your flight - that one's important."

Top holiday resort approves huge fines for public sex and nudity in major crackdown on badly-behaved Brit tourists

The Algarve party resort of Albufeira has gone to war against boozy tourists and slapped new rules to curb alcohol-fueled debauchery. Hefty fines will now be imposed for everything from urinating in the street to getting naked. The rules will kick in within weeks, in time for the summer season, aiming to curb anti-social behaviour. And locals hope they will turn the tide, with nakedness, vomiting in the street and having sex in public all now coming at a heavy price. Badly behaved tourists who go starkers in public, or get caught bonking or simulating sex, face paying anything from £1,685 to £3,375. Spitting or urinating in the street will be punished with fines of between £125 and £630. And entering bars and other businesses topless could lead to a £1,250 levy. Bars and cafes which let customers in without the proper dress code will also be fined. Brit tourists were first warned about the new get-tough rules in February when Albufeira's mayor Jose Carlos Rolo announced the "Code of Conduct" plans. Last summer, a group of partying Brit tourists put on a shocking display of public nudity, leaving the locals fuming. 'Can't believe it' cry locals as 'tourist' filmed cycling NAKED through Lanzarote amid anti-visitor fury plaguing Spain Footage of their drunken antics, showing them starkers on their knees in a line on top of a bar counter, went viral. Rolo called the display 'deeply negative' and said he would call for police reinforcements. He said last night: "Tourists who fall down drunk aren't needed here at all." Predictably, Albufeira is fast becoming the go-to spot for young revellers looking for a boozy break. During The Sun's investigation into tourist revelry in the town, we saw how cops and medics are already patrolling the mile-long strip — nicknamed 'The Chaos' by locals — to keep a firm eye on the crazy, drunken antics of holidaymakers. Little wonder some end up in a terrible state, as girls are plied with free drinks at many pubs in a bid to lure in paying lads, while every bar offers shots from £1.70. Local taxi driver Guilherme, 25, told The Sun: 'Stay here more than one night and you'll see tourists having sex in the street. Sometimes it's groups of naked men on balconies. It's shocking.' Furious locals decided to bring in the new code of conduct after a group of British louts got naked on a bar top and proceeded to crawl around in broad daylight last year. 9 Tourists throw up on the streets Credit: Olivia West 9 Couple caught getting frisky at the roadside Credit: Olivia West 9 Tourists lying on pavement Credit: Olivia West 9 Topless youths clamber clumsily up a stone wall Credit: Olivia West It comes as a 21-year-old Brit was found dead at the foot of a set of steps in Albufeira's old town last Wednesday. Cops are said to believe booze is behind the tragedy. The news, which emerged on Saturday, came days after reveller Greg Monks, 38, from Glasgow, was found dead in a ravine near Albufeira. He was there on a stag do and had left the party early to return to his hotel when it is thought he jumped over a wall while drunk, unaware there was a steep drop on the other side. He was missing for a week. The fatalities shine an unwelcome light on the more dangerous and seedier side of the Algarve resort. Once marketed as a family-friendly getaway, now a much younger crew of holidaymakers is descending on the cobbled streets, turning it into a nocturnal party town.
