Driver charged with Liverpool soccer parade tragedy appears in court

A driver charged with multiple counts of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm for ramming into a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans celebrating their team's Premier League championship was ordered held in custody Friday at his first court appearance.

Paul Doyle, wearing a black suit, white shirt and gray tie, looked emotional as he arrived in court. He only spoke only to confirm his name, address and birth date in a hearing in Liverpool Magistrates' Court. He did not enter a plea.

Doyle, 53, is accused of dangerous driving and six serious offenses alleging he caused or tried to cause grievous bodily harm. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison if he is convicted.

The father of three bowed his head as the charges were read. The counts are related to two boys, two women and two men who were among the 79 people injured Monday. The victims ranged in age from 9 to 78, police said. Seven people remained hospitalized Thursday.

Doyle's case was transferred to Liverpool Crown Court, where a different judge scheduled an Aug. 14 hearing for him to enter pleas to the charges. His trial date was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 24 and was expected to last three to four weeks.

The city had been celebrating Liverpool's record-tying 20th title when Doyle turned down a street full of fans and joy quickly turned to tragedy. Police said they believed Doyle got past a road block by following an ambulance that was trying to reach a possible heart attack victim.

Videos showed the car hit and toss a person wrapped in a red Liverpool flag into the air and then swerve into a sea of people packed on the side of the road.

At least four people, including a child, had to be freed from beneath the vehicle when it came to a halt.

The driver was believed to have acted alone and terrorism was not suspected, Merseyside Police said. They have not disclosed an alleged motive for the act.

2 charged after 4 guns, 2,000 rounds of ammunition stolen west of Edmonton
Two firearms seized by police in May. (Credit: RCMP) Charges have been laid after four guns and 2,000 rounds of ammunition were stolen along with a vehicle west of Edmonton. The vehicle was reported stolen to Parkland RCMP on May 19. It was later recovered without the guns. On May 29, police executed a search warrant in Edmonton and seized two stolen guns A 46-year-old woman was arrested and charged with: possession of weapons contrary to order; unauthorized possession of a firearm; unsafe storage of a firearm; possession of a weapon obtained by crime; possession of stolen property over $5,000; and two counts of failing to comply with a release order. A 35-year-old man was arrested several days later and charged with: unsafe storage of a firearm; unauthorized possession of a firearm; and possession of stolen property over $5,000. The woman has a court date of July 29 in Stony Plain. The next court date for the man is pending.

Knife-waving man arrested at north Edmonton Walmart
The Walmart in Slave Lake. (Google Street View) A man has been arrested after allegedly threatening employees in a northern Alberta Walmart with a knife. It happened on Monday in Slave Lake. Police responded and arrested a 23-year-old man from Trout Lake, Alta. RCMP say a search of the man turned up stolen goods as well as a knife. The man has been charged with: theft under $5,000; causing a disturbance; carrying a concealed weapon; and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He has been released from custody and will appear in court in Slave Lake on June 18.
