Forum: Should CDC vouchers be used on non-essential items?

In May, Singapore rolled out $500 worth of CDC vouchers to every Singaporean household, to alleviate the rising cost of living, while supporting local hawkers and heartland merchants.
However, there have been reports of recipients using vouchers at cafes or on non-essential items like electronics.
While I acknowledge the diverse and evolving needs of Singaporeans, these choices veer from the vouchers' intended purpose of easing basic financial burdens and supporting essential daily living.
When government assistance is spent on non-essential items, it risks undermining public trust in the scheme. This can fuel a perception that some are taking advantage of the support meant to help with basic living needs.
When voucher usage is also clustered in cafes or already popular areas, the scheme's goal of encouraging footfall or providing meaningful support to smaller or less visible heartland merchants is also weakened.
To keep such schemes effective, both strong policy design and responsible use are essential.
As society evolves, so must our understanding of needs, but this must be balanced with safeguarding the spirit of social support and the public's confidence in it.

REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a proclamation ordering 50% tariffs on certain copper imports, citing national security, the White House said. The proclamation imposes a 50% tariff on semi-finished copper products and copper-intensive derivative products as of August 1, according to a fact sheet released by the White House. The tariffs will exclude copper scrap and copper input materials such as copper ores, concentrates, mattes, cathodes, and anodes, the statement said. The measure came after a U.S. investigation under Section 232, which U.S. President Donald Trump ordered in February. Along with tariffs, the order calls for steps to support the domestic copper industry, including requiring 25% of high-quality scrap produced in the U.S. to also be sold within the country. REUTERS

REUTERS/Hasnoor Hussain/File Photo BEIJING - China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday called for more engagement with the United States, and warned against confrontations between the two global powers, according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry. Wang made the comments during a meeting in Beijing with a delegation of U.S. businesses that include executives from Goldman Sachs, Boeing and Apple, the ministry said. "China is willing to enhance engagement with the U.S., avoid misjudgment, manage differences, and explore cooperation," Wang was quoted as saying. His remarks came a day after top Chinese and U.S. negotiators wrapped up a latest round of trade talks in Stockholm, with both sides agreeing to seek an extension of their 90-day tariff truce struck in May. Wang said that China-U.S. relations are affected by global developments and exert a "profound impact" on international dynamics. "China and the U.S. need to establish more channels of communication and consultation, view each other objectively, rationally, and pragmatically, and foster a correct strategic perception," he said, urging both countries to reject "unilateralism and bullying". He encouraged U.S. companies to maintain confidence in the Chinese market, and welcomed them to continue to invest in China, the ministry statement said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump has been frustrated with how trade talks with India are progressing and believes his 25% tariff announcement will help the situation, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said on Wednesday. Trump and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will have more information "shortly" on the additional penalty Trump announced earlier, Hassett told reporters at the White House. "I think President Trump is frustrated with the progress we've made with India but feels that a 25% tariff will address and remedy the situation in a way that's good for the American people," Hassett said. Trump said in a post on Truth Social earlier Wednesday he would impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from India, starting Aug. 1. He added that the world's fifth-largest economy would also face an unspecified penalty, also starting on Friday, but gave no details. REUTERS
