Liberty County Sheriff's Office and Jail complex nears completion
For years, the sheriff's office has worked out of makeshift offices, while running a jail built in 1942.
'It's the oldest operational jail in the state of Florida right now. So, the design of it, while it was functional back then, is not functional now,' Liberty County Sheriff Dusty Arnold said.
Sheriff Dusty Arnold and his deputies are set to move into the new facility, which will streamline operations all under one roof.
The $23,000,000 project is fully funded by state appropriations.

With the 128-bed jail, Sheriff Arnold says the complex is built to accommodate any future growth Liberty County may experience.
For the first time, the jail features a control tower, an intake room, and a sallyport.
'The old jail that was built in 1942 does not have a sallyport, doesn't have a fence or anything. The deputy literally pulls up to the front door and lets the inmate out, and walks into the jail. This right here will have the sallyport, you pull in, the gate will shut behind if the inmate wants to do anything, try to run or anything like that, they're in a closed facility and they can't when they get out of the patrol car,' Arnold said.
On the other side of the building, the new sheriff's office features a fitness facility, a break room, a media room, beds for employees if they need to stay overnight in a natural disaster, and more.
'The training room is to invite other agencies to come up here and do different classes like radar and laser, interdiction courses, and different courses that our instructors can offer now. But we're thinking towards the future. Hopefully, one day we can partner with either Chipola College or Pat Thomas [Law Enforcement Academy at Tallahassee State College] and make this a facility where you can actually train law enforcement and corrections in the future,' Arnold added.
The jail and the dispatch center in the Sheriff's office are rated to withstand a Category 5 Hurricane. The remainder of the sheriff's office is rated to withstand a Category 3 hurricane.
Contractor Culpepper Construction is more than three months ahead of schedule.It's set to be complete on September 17th.

'The fast action of these soldiers, under stress, and under trauma, and under fire, absolutely saved lives from being lost,' said Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. On the morning of Aug. 6, Staff Sgt. Melissa Taylor was sitting at her desk in Fort Stewart, Georgia, checking emails when she heard 1st Sgt. Joshua Arnold yelling down the hallway about gunfire. So I immediately sprinted over to the soldier and started rendering aid,' the battalion career counselor and former combat medic told reporters a day later, on Aug 7. An Army sergeant was shooting his fellow servicemembers in the building. Five soldiers were shot. Taylor, of Winterhaven, Florida, and five other soldiers jumped into action. Sgt. Aaron Turner, of Farmington, New Mexico, who was unarmed, tackled the assailant. Master Sgt. Justin Thomas, Kingswood, Texas, also jumped on the shooter, whom officials identified as Sgt. Quornelius Radford. Others rushed to staunch their coworkers' bleeding. Arnold, the soldier shouting through the hallway, who is from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, recalled the next day, 'It's our training that kicked in. Mine kicked in.' The suspect, who was swiftly apprehended, had targeted his colleagues at his workplace, the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion's company operations facility, Army officials said. He remains in custody. The five victims, all soldiers, survived and are expected to recover. Two, both women, remain hospitalized – one at the base's Winn Army Community Hospital and the other at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, according to 3rd Infantry Division commander Brig. Gen. John Lubas. The Army's top official, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, traveled to the south Georgia post to present medals to Taylor, Arnold and four other soldiers who responded to the shooting. "The fast action of these soldiers, under stress and under trauma and under fire, absolutely saved lives from being lost," Driscoll said during a press conference on Aug. 7. He said that doctors credited the soldiers' medical aid with saving some of the victims' lives. The six soldiers received the Meritorious Service Medal, a prestigious decoration rarely presented to lower-ranking troops. Their battalion is part of the 3rd Infantry Division's 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, a tank unit that returned from a European deployment in summer 2024. Brigade support battalions such as the 703rd provide resupply, maintenance and other logistical support to larger combat units. Thomas and Turner were honored for their work detaining the suspect. Arnold, Taylor, and two others – Staff Sgt. Robert Pacheco of Amsterdam, New York, and Sgt. Eve Rodarte of El Centro, California – were recognized for their work treating the shooting victims at the scene. The award citation for Arnold, one of several read aloud at the ceremony, revealed that a fellow first sergeant was one of the victims. A first sergeant is the top enlisted soldier in a company-sized unit, ranging from 50 to 250 soldiers. The role carries a heightened responsibility for the troops in their charge. As the victims recuperate, other survivors of the shooting have started to process the event. 'It will be a little bit before this moment hits you, and that's ok,' said Driscoll while addressing the unit's soldiers. He committed to providing counseling and other support services for as long as needed. Taylor, who'd started the morning reading emails, told reporters she went home after the chaos on Aug. 6 and doted on her children. 'I made my kids' favorite dinner,' she said.

Miss United States Lindsey Langston accuses Rep. Cory Mills of threatening to publish her nude pics, sex videos
WASHINGTON — The reigning Miss United States is accusing Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) of threatening to make public sex videos and nude pictures of her — and 'harm any men' she went out with in the future — after she ended their relationship earlier this year upon finding out he was seeing another woman. Lindsey Langston, who was crowned in October, reported the shocking sextortion attempt by Mills, 45, to the Columbia (Fla.) County Sheriff's Office July 14, according to a document obtained by The Post. 'Since February 20th of 2025, Cory has contacted Lindsey numerous times on numerous different accounts threatening to release nude images and videos of her, to include recorded videos of her and Cory engaging in sexual acts,' the report stated. 4 Miss United States pageant winner Lindsey Langston alleged the shocking sextortion attempt by Mills, 45, to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office in Florida on July 14. But in February 2025, Sarah Raviani, an Iranian-American Republican activist, revealed her 'significant other for over a year' had 'grabbed her, shoved her, and pushed her out of the door' at the same location as Mills' Washington, DC, penthouse apartment, according to a police incident report reviewed by NBC Washington. Raviani — who was left with 'bruises on her arm which appeared fresh,' according to the report filed with the Metropolitan Police Department — declined to press charges and later issued a statement calling the incident 'a personal matter' and added that she was 'severely jet-lagged,' 'had been drinking' and the bruising was 'the result of medical conditions like eczema and activities from my recent trip to Dubai.' 'While the personal matter in question was emotionally charged, there was no physical altercation,' Raviani said. The incident report seen by NBC showed Raviani allowed cops to listen to a recorded phone call in which Mills 'instruct[ed] her to lie about the origin of her bruises' and that he had himself 'admitted [to officers] that the situation escalated from verbal to physical.' 4 Mills and Langston, a GOP state committeewoman, had been dating since November 2021 and sharing a house in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., since May 2024 after the congressman claimed he finalized divorce from his estranged wife. Raviani still has a picture of her and Mills posing together from mid-March posted on her Instagram account. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement didn't immediately respond to requests for further records of the incident or investigation. Reps for Mills' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

He also said Davis had immunity agreements granted to him by federal and local authorities. Advertisement A district court judge upheld his charges, saying he was not protected from prosecution because he had not provided proof of those immunity deals and that the decades-long delay was not intentional. According to the appeal, Davis was interviewed in 1998 and 1999 by federal prosecutors under the agreement that his statements would not be used to prosecute him. At the time, he denied knowing who was involved in Shakur's killing.
