Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre wins six major events, projects RM77.5mil economic impact

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) has secured six major international conferences in the first half of the year, cementing Malaysia's reputation as a premier destination for world-class business events.
These high-impact conferences - spanning aviation, global health security, clean energy, evidence-based healthcare, and women's health - are set to welcome more than 6,150 delegates in 2026 and 2027, generating an estimated RM77.5 million in economic impact for the country.
With these latest wins, the Centre continues to play a vital role in elevating Malaysia's international presence, while contributing meaningfully to the country's journey toward innovation, sustainability, and economic transformation.
John Burke, general manager of the Centre, described the bid wins as a powerful endorsement of Malaysia's capacity, connectivity, and collaborative ecosystem.
"Beyond the RM77 million in direct economic contribution, these events will spark new partnerships, accelerate talent development, and showcase our nation's commitment to driving solutions for aviation safety, global health security, net-zero technology and women's health," he said in a statement.
The successful bids reinforce the Centre's evolving role - not merely as a venue, but as a strategic enabler of Malaysia's business events sector. These conferences align closely with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which prioritises growth in healthcare, green energy, and life sciences.
Among the confirmed conferences are the Global Health Security Conference 2026, Energy Tech Summit Asia 2026, and the 85th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences 2027. Each will convene global experts and thought leaders while driving substantial tourism and business opportunities across accommodation, dining, transport, and attractions.
Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the Centre offers over 34,000 square metres of flexible, modern event space. Its strong credentials in sustainability, inclusivity, and service excellence have been key to securing these prestigious events.
"The Centre's success also reflects the strong synergy between venue, destination and industry partners, particularly in bidding for and hosting large-scale international events. We look forward to working with each organiser to deliver an unforgettable Malaysian experience that inspires repeat visitation and long-term investment," said Burke.

Reduced levy to take effect on Aug 8: Minister

PETALING JAYA: The reduced tariffs on Malaysian exports will take effect on Aug 8 following the conclusion of negotiations between both countries, said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. He said both governments are expected to issue a joint statement this weekend to formalise the agreement, which he described as a significant breakthrough in bilateral trade relations. 'In the tariff negotiations, we adopted a comprehensive and systematic approach in finalising Malaysia's offer to the US. 'The ministry's negotiation team worked closely with various government agencies to coordinate efforts. We also obtained Cabinet approval to present an offer to the US that we believe is fair for Malaysia.' He said the outcome reflects the strength of Malaysia-US economic ties with the US remaining Malaysia's largest export market valued at RM198.65 billion in 2024, and affirms Malaysia's credibility as a reliable trade and investment partner. Tengku Zafrul said the revised 19% tariff aligns Malaysia with regional competitors, helping safeguard national interests while maintaining export competitiveness. He also directly addressed public concerns that Malaysia may have compromised its halal standards to meet US demands, dismissing such claims as false. 'What was agreed upon was to facilitate the import process of US halal meat into Malaysia, which will be carried out by US halal certification bodies recognised by the Islamic Development Department. 'Compliance with syariah requirements remains a prerequisite for all halal meat imports, including those from the US. Any meat that does not meet the department's standards cannot be brought into Malaysia.' Tengku Zafrul thanked the US Trade Representative's Office and the US Commerce Department for their constructive cooperation. He said the ministry has been working with Bank Negara Malaysia to assess the economic implications of various tariff levels and would coordinate with other ministries to support local exporters, especially SMEs. The ministry will also promote the use of Malaysia's 18 free trade agreements to diversify export markets and align efforts with long-term national strategies, including the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, Green Investment Strategy and the National Semiconductor Strategy.

Backbenchers Club: US tariff cut a diplomatic win for Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Backbenchers Club (BBC) has welcomed the United States' tariff cut on Malaysian exports as a key achievement of strategic diplomacy and firm policy stance. The US tariff on Malaysian exports has been reduced to 19 per cent from 25 per cent, effective today. In a statement, the BBC said the outcome was not easily won, with Malaysia voicing its concerns loudly and clearly when needed. "The government's insistence on safeguarding Malaysia's core industrial policies, including support for domestic enterprises, national strategic industries and inclusive economic development was central throughout the negotiations. "We stood firm, especially on our red lines. Most critically, this reduction from 25 per cent to 19 per cent was achieved without compromising our sovereign right to implement key economic and social policies that support the stability, resilience and long-term growth of the nation. "We extend our congratulations to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry for delivering this result through persistent engagement, clear objectives and unwavering commitment to Malaysia's national interest. "We also commend the Prime Minister for defending that space while keeping the door open to meaningful trade engagement with one of our largest partners," it said today. The BBC said the decision by the US acknowledged Malaysia as a credible and reliable trade partner with enduring economic fundamentals. "More importantly, it validates Malaysia's reform trajectory under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Semiconductor Strategy." Looking ahead, the BBC said it would continue to support the prime minister and his cabinet in driving structural economic reforms and exploring market diversification. "These efforts are essential not only to absorb the impact of global trade fluctuations but to position Malaysian companies, especially small and medium enterprises, for long-term competitiveness in high-growth sectors. "This is a positive development. But it must be seen as a stepping stone, not a finish line. Malaysia must keep up the momentum, modernising industries, opening new markets, and building a resilient, inclusive economy rooted in policy credibility and national interest."

Malaysia hails 19pc US tariff as positive outcome, markets rebound on economic plan

Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 By: The Edge Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has welcomed the lower-than-expected 19pc US tariff on its exports as a 'positive outcome', with the government pledging steps to mitigate the impact while advancing long-term industrial reforms. The announcement came as local markets reacted positively to both the tariff decision and the unveiling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) said Malaysia had stood firm on key policy red lines during negotiations, securing the tariff rate without compromising its sovereign right to implement critical socio-economic policies. Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the deal reflected Malaysia's credibility as a reliable trade and investment partner, expressing gratitude to US counterparts for their cooperation. To counter the tariff's effect on exports, Miti will promote the use of Malaysia's 18 free trade agreements, support small and medium enterprises, and advance key industrial strategies including the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, the Green Investment Strategy, and the National Semiconductor Strategy. Miti also plans outreach programmes to help exporters adapt and aims to strengthen US-Malaysia trade ties. Despite global economic uncertainties, Malaysia's strong domestic demand, policy reforms, and infrastructure pipeline are expected to buffer external shocks. The US is Malaysia's largest export market (RM198.65 billion) and top source of foreign investment (RM32.82 billion in 2024). Investor sentiment was buoyant on Friday, with the FBM KLCI rising to 1,533.10 points before pausing at 1,531.97, reversing previous losses and outperforming broader Asian markets. Gains were led by banking and construction stocks, notably CIMB (+4pc) and Gamuda (+4.2pc). The US tariff announcement and the RM430 billion 13MP development plan, averaging RM86 billion annually through 2030, drove optimism particularly for infrastructure and renewable energy sectors. Analysts from Phillip Capital and Hong Leong Investment Bank said the tariff outcome was milder than expected, and the government's focus on long-term infrastructure builds investor confidence. While the ringgit weakened slightly against the US dollar, government bonds held steady, indicating continued investor confidence in Malaysia's macroeconomic direction. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
