NIT Rourkela team secures patent for biofilm tech

Time of Indiaa day ago
Rourkela: A research team from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, has secured a patent from the central govt's patent office for developing a bacterial biofilm technology that offers a low-cost, eco-friendly solution to one of industrial pollution's most stubborn challenges—phenanthrene degradation.
Phenanthrene, a toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), is a common contaminant in industrial wastewater, stemming from fossil fuel combustion, chemical manufacturing, and oil spills.
Traditional methods to tackle PAHs, such as chemical oxidation and soil excavation, are both costly and risk causing secondary pollution. "Our biofilm is compatible with existing biofilm reactors used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities, particularly those targeting hydrocarbon-based pollutants.
This patented technology also opens up opportunities for collaboration with the petrochemical industry to promote sustainable pollution control practices," aid professor Surajit Das of the department of life science at NIT Rourkela.
Kumari Uma Mahto, a research graduate at NIT Rourkela, highlighted the broader impact of this technology, stating, "Our development can significantly mitigate the impact of industrial oil spills, where phenanthrene and other PAHs pose serious threats to marine ecosystems. It will also benefit regions with high industrial activity and inadequate pollution control infrastructure."

Peer-teaching bridges learning gaps in school

1 2 Kolkata: Class XII students of Modern High School for Girls, stepped into a new role recently— that of teachers. Assigned to guide the curious minds of Class VIII, each senior was paired with two to three juniors, introducing them to the basics of coordinate geometry. Before the session, both classes were briefed thoroughly by their teachers, who outlined clear objectives and ensured everyone was well-prepared. The goal was simple yet challenging, to help the ones in Class VIII understand how to plot coordinates on the Cartesian plane and identify different types of quadrilaterals. With no prior experience in graph work, the juniors faced a steep learning curve. But the students of Class XII tackled it with patience, enthusiasm, and creativity. Equipped with graph books, sharpened pencils and erasers, the classrooms buzzed with energy. The seniors began with explaining the x and y axis and how to plot points, before progressing to how these points could form shapes like squares, rectangles, rhombuses and parallelograms. A strong bond formed between the two classes. As the juniors relied on the seniors for their upcoming test, it gave the ones in Class XII a real sense of responsibility. Thiruvananthapuram corporation's seed ball campaign enters World Book of Records

Thiruvananthapuram : Seed ball-making campaign organised by city corporation at Putharikandam Maidan on Saturday morning secured a place in the World Book of Records. The campaign, part of the city's broader environmental protection initiatives, saw the enthusiastic participation of over 7,000 students, exceeding the original plan to involve 6,000 participants. The campaign involved preparing seed balls – mixtures of soil, fertilizer and seeds – which will later be deposited in various locations across the city to promote urban afforestation and enhance greenery. The large-scale participation and the speed of execution helped the event earn a spot in the record books, authorities said. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan who inaugurated the city's Green Budget 2025 at the venue praised the seed ball initiative as a model programme for other civic bodies in the state and beyond. "Thiruvananthapuram has become the first city in Kerala to implement a Green Budget. This is a model initiative that local self-govts across the state can emulate," he said during the inaugural speech. The chief minister added that in the face of mounting climate challenges, such as those highlighted at COP 29 summit in 2024, where no concrete guidelines emerged, it was imperative that local actions be taken without delay. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Cash Roadster Undo "This campaign creates awareness and demonstrates our commitment to environment-friendly practices. India's education system transformed in last few years: Min

1 2 Berhampur: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday said the country's higher education ecosystem has transformed a lot in the last few years, and India has become the favourite destination of global educational institutions. While several global institutes have opened their campuses in the country, others are in the pipeline. Some of our institutes also opened their campuses in foreign countries. IIM Ahmedabad will soon open its campus in Dubai, said Pradhan, while addressing the convocation at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur. Highlighting the growth of education in the country, he said the total enrolment of students touched around 4.46 crore in 2022-23, a 30% increase since 2014-15. The female enrolment during the period grew by around 38 to 40%. "This indicates the govt's commitment towards inclusive education," he said. The govt implemented the New Education Policy-2020, keeping an eye on achieving India as a developed nation by 2047—the Viksit Bharat, call of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Urging the students to become "job creators and not be job-seekers," he said they should be involved in innovation. Addressing the convocation of Berhampur University earlier, he urged the students to work hard to achieve the Viksit Odisha and Viksit Bharat in 2036 and 2047, respectively, as called by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Bharat number one in economics in the world. Odisha will celebrate its centenary of statehood in the next 11 years, while the country celebrates its centenary of achievement of freedom in 2047. The young students should play a key role in achieving the Viksit Odisha and Viksit Bharat in the next 11 and 22 years, said Pradhan. University is not an institute to teach, but it should be involved in research and evolve innovations, he said. Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati addressed the convocations of both the institutes and highlighted the growth of the education ecosystem of the country in the last few years, which makes it flexible and innovation-driven. Ashok Kumar Ganguli, director, IISER Berhampur, highlighted the achievements of the institute. In the convocation, 136 BS-MS, one MS degree, and 22 PhD students received their degrees. The governor inaugurated the state-of-the-art "central advanced instrumentation facility" on the IISER campus. Berhampur University awarded honorary to Ajit Kumar Mohanty, secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Tessy Thomas, former Director General, Aeronautical Systems, DRDO and known as the "Missile Woman of India," and Raimati Ghiuria, seed custodian, well known as Millet Queen.
