Siemens Gamesa, Chinese magnet suppliers discuss European production, COO says

By Christoph Steitz
ERLANGEN, Germany (Reuters) -Wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa is in talks with Chinese suppliers of rare earth permanent magnets about the possibility of bringing production to Europe, in a bid to cut the region's reliance on imports after curbs on supplies from China.
Delays in Chinese rare earth export permits have caused European car makers and their suppliers to scramble for alternatives in a market that is dominated by the world's No. 2 economy, threatening production stops across the continent.
The wind sector also depends on rare earths processed in China, most notably neodymium, which is used in permanent magnets - a key turbine component - but currently not affected by export permit delays.
A division of Siemens Energy, Siemens Gamesa, the world's biggest maker of offshore wind turbines, has already taken steps to diversify away from China, including a deal earlier this week under which it will get permanent magnets from Japan's TDK.
"Regarding the issue of Chinese magnet dependence it's also about the following question: Would I rather spend a little more money in Europe to become resilient? Or are there ways to incentivise suppliers from outside Europe to build a footprint in Europe?," Carina Brehm, Siemens Gamesa's chief operating officer said at a company event.
"In general, we are also talking to Chinese suppliers about the possibility of building factories in Europe. If investments in sustainable structures are made here as part of fair competition, this is definitely an option."
While Brehm did not identify any of the suppliers, some of the biggest include JL MAG Rare-Earth, Ningbo Yunsheng and Baotou Tianhe Magnetics Technology.
Siemens Gamesa, which is trying to emerge from a quality crisis that has caused major losses in recent years, was working hard on its goal to break even in 2026, Brehm said.
Asked about whether the onshore wind division, which was the source of the issues, was up for sale, Siemens Energy's finance chief Maria Ferraro said the portfolio was staying together with the expectation that double-digit margins would be generated in the future.
"The team is rallying around ensuring the stability in that business. It's not easy. But what's important is that it's performing in line with our expectations," Ferraro said.

Case studies: IoT in the power industry

The Internet of Things (IoT), which refers to the use of connected sensors and actuators to control and monitor the environment, the things that move within it and the people that act within it, will transform the power industry. It will help tackle five key power industry challenges: modernising ageing grids, accelerating the energy transition, improving productivity and efficiency, strengthening energy security and enhancing workforce safety. This article presents selected case studies highlighting the impact of IoT within the power industry. In November 2024, AWS announced that it had partnered with Siemens Energy to develop a unified industrial internet platform to manage and analyse manufacturing asset data across the original equipment manufacturer's global operations. Siemens Energy's previous setup was fragmented, with manufacturing asset data siloed across factories running standalone IoT systems, making it difficult to standardise analytics and drive cross-site efficiencies. Integration was also difficult due to a mix of greenfield and brownfield assets running on more than 10 machine data protocols. Legacy equipment also required costly, hard-to-configure hardware to extract useable data. To overcome these challenges, Siemens Energy collaborated with AWS to build the Connected Factory, a centralised platform powered by AWS IoT SiteWise. The platform standardises manufacturing asset data collection, storage and analysis across all factories. Siemens Energy used AWS IoT SiteWise Edge to connect legacy and modern equipment without needing to install additional hardware, accelerating deployment. Siemens Energy has also integrated AWS partner Domatica's EasyEdge tool with AWS IoT Sitewise to enable data ingestion from more than 10 industrial standards, helping to unify previously incompatible data streams. Collected data is securely stored in AWS's Simple Storage Service (S3). Engineers and factory teams can access real-time operational insights through customised dashboards powered by Amazon Managed Grafana, improving asset monitoring and decision-making. A centralised AWS account governs the platform's architecture, while local AWS accounts give individual factories operational control. Factory teams can request new equipment connections by submitting support tickets to the central IoT team. Most installation and configuration steps are automated, reducing complexity and supporting efficient scaling. Connected Factory has already improved speed, cost and reliability across Siemens Energy's operations. There are now 18 live factories, supporting 30 custom use cases in areas such as equipment maintenance, energy management and process transparency. Assets such as large autonomous vehicles, robots and computer numerical control machines are connected. Manual data collection times have fallen 50%, boosting data accuracy and transparency. Maintenance costs are down by 25%, while machine availability is up by 15%. Factory teams now detect and respond to equipment anomalies faster, improving quality and accelerating project timelines. Siemens Energy plans to scale Connected Factory across its 80 factories globally, while also integrating AI into the platform to enhance production efficiency. Vattenfall is optimising wind turbine design with IoT-based "digital twins" to optimise wind turbine design, operations and maintenance, aiming to maximise return on investment for offshore wind farms. The company's digital twins cover its fleet of more than 1,300 wind turbines, with a capacity of around 6.1GW across five European countries. IoT sensors installed on each turbine collect real-time data on structural behaviour, operational performance (rotor speed, power output and vibration levels) and environmental conditions (wind speed, temperature and humidity). The IoT sensors transmit this data into a centralised digital twin platform, offering a comprehensive overview of the entire fleet and detailed insights into individual turbines. Vattenfall believes digital twins can optimise turbine designs by addressing discrepancies between design assumptions and real-world performance. Michael Sandholm Jepsen, technical authority support for structure integrity at Vattenfall, notes: 'Digital twins [have] demonstrated that the wear and tear on wind turbines is lower than predicted in the original designs.' Such insights enable efficient turbine designs, reduce costly over-engineering, and optimise maintenance schedules, leading to long-term cost savings. Vattenfall has already used data from digital twins to incorporate 10-year upfront lifetime extensions into original designs for two of its latest wind farm projects. Vattenfall's digital twins have also identified opportunities to reduce steel use in turbine construction, resulting in significant cost savings. Additionally, digital twins enable fewer physical inspections and support proactive maintenance by pinpointing underperforming turbines, allowing for corrective remedies. Vattenfall plans to participate in a joint industry project to review offshore wind codes and standards, using findings from digital twins to guide future modifications. In July 2024, Engie Group's EV charging business Engie Vianeo partnered with BICS to upgrade 50,000 EV charging stations across Western Europe with real-time, cellular-based IoT connectivity. Engie Vianeo had previously relied on black-box devices to collect charging station data. These devices had to be physically retrieved to access and process the data, an extremely inefficient process that slowed decision-making. The company is now transitioning to BICS' SIM for Things IoT connectivity platform, equipping each charging station with a SIM card to enable real-time data transmission, remote monitoring and over-the-air software updates. This will allow staff at Engie Vianeo's European supervisory centre to perform remote maintenance and troubleshooting, while insights enhance analytics on station use. Customers will also benefit from a dedicated mobile app that provides live charger availability and charging status updates, helping them better plan journeys. Engie Vianeo will gain visibility across its connected charging network, supporting faster, smarter and more scaleable operations. The initiative supports Engie Vianeo's goal to scale its EV charging network in line with EU regulations mandating expanded charging infrastructure. Engie Vianeo plans to have 12,000 charge points in France and 3,000 in Belgium by the end of 2025. The company aims to offer a complete range of mobility solutions, from installing charging infrastructure through to power supply, maintenance, and servicing. Major power companies such as Engie are increasingly integrating EV charging stations into their portfolios and business strategies, driven by growing consumer demand for cleaner transportation, regulatory pressures and an overarching need to modernise grid infrastructure. Jeff Bezos And Lauren Sanchez's Wedding Events Begin: What We Know About Venice Extravaganza

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and former journalist Lauren Sánchez are getting married this week in what is expected to be an opulent—though increasingly controversial—ceremony hosted in Venice, Italy, with protests by angered locals having already interfered with some of the billionaire's party plans. Lauren Sanchez and US founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, leave the Aman Hotel in Venice on June 25, ... More 2026. Photo by STEFANO RELLANDINI/AFP via Getty Images The wedding began its 'multiday celebration' Thursday and is expected to last until Saturday, costing the billionaire tech mogul and his soon-to-be wife tens of millions of dollars, according to multiple outlets. Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who has spoken out against protesters demonstrating against the wedding, told Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera the wedding 'will have economic repercussions worth millions of euros for our city.' It is not clear when exactly Bezos and Sánchez will tie the knot or whether they have already done so, CNN reported, citing a spokesperson for Brugnaro who said an official marriage request has not been submitted to the city, indicating this week's festivities could just be ceremonial. Protests by locals, who are upset with overtourism and Bezos' links to President Donald Trump, have threatened to disrupt the wedding, and sources told Reuters the threat of protests prompted Bezos to move a wedding party from a central nightlife area to the more secluded Arsenale, which is surrounded by water and impossible to reach by land when bridges are raised. It's unclear where in Venice the wedding will take place, and CNN reported planners have secured multiple venues so plans can stay fluid in case protesters or inclement weather disrupt the celebration. The Wall Street Journal reported Bezos and Sánchez plan to get married on the Venetian island of San Giorgio Maggiore on Friday and hold a Saturday reception at Arsenale, a fortified medieval shipyard. The small city is spread out across over 110 small islands, with the historical center taking up approximately two square miles. Previously, a spokesperson for Brugnaro told CNN in March the wedding will take place on Bezos' $500 million superyacht known as the Koru. The Koru is a 417-foot sailing yacht, the second-largest of its kind in the world, meaning it would need to be anchored away from Venice's Grand Canal due to its size. Conversely, 'No Space for Bezos,' a local group protesting the event, has said the wedding will take place in the historic Church of the Abbey of Misericordia, according to the BBC. Some locals in Venice, which has dealt with overtourism that has strained the city's infrastructure and services for years, have staged protests over concerns the wedding's scale will worsen some of the issues created by excessive tourist crowds. Activists have organized a 'No Space for Bezos' campaign opposing the wedding, posting banners and stickers throughout the city. Federica Toninelli, a Venetian activist with 'No Space for Bezos,' told Reuters the wedding is also a 'symbol of the exploitation of the city by outsiders.' Protesters have threatened to block access to canals and city streets in an effort to block wedding attendees from reaching party venues in the city, according to Variety. Oliviero Cassarà, a lead organizer and activist, said in a statement 'No Space for Bezos' has zero issue with Americans or people getting married in Venice, instead criticizing Bezos for his links to Trump and blasting the president's controversial trade policies. 'Bezos supported Trump economically and politically and is consequently co-responsible for this drift against us Italian and European citizens,' Cassarà said. Brugnaro has spoken out against the protesters and tried to reassure them the city is capable of handling the event, citing its hosting of the Venice Film Festival and G7 Summit. Brugnaro said he was 'ashamed of those who behave like this,' Variety reported. Protest organizers have criticized Brugnaro, insisting demonstrations will be peaceful. On Monday, the Greenpeace environmental activist organization joined 'No Space for Bezos' in Venice's St. Mark's Square, unveiling a banner with Bezos' face that read: 'IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.' Police quickly took the banner away, the Associated Press reported. Protesters also plan to block access to the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, where they believe Bezos will hold one of his wedding parties, and other unspecified protests are planned, The Guardian reported. Protesters have also installed life-size mannequins of Bezos around the city, including one in which the body is covered with dollar bills, and another that holds a bloody sign that says, 'Just Married.' How Many People Are Attending The Wedding And Who Is On The Guest List? Venice officials have said the guest list for Bezos and Sánchez's wedding is limited to 200 people. On Tuesday afternoon, Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner, who were rumored to attend, were photographed arriving in Venice. Other celebrities so far spotted in Venice for the festivities include Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Brady, Gayle King, Orlando Bloom and Barry Diller. Investor Michael Kives has also been seen in Venice in addition to Dolce & Gabbana founder and billionaire Domenico Dolce, fashion designer and rum executive Spencer Antle and Queen Rania of Jordan, wife of the country's King Abdullah II. Bezos invited President Donald Trump to the wedding, the Journal reported, though Trump will not make the trip due to scheduling conflicts. How Many Wedding Events Are Bezos And Sánchez Hosting? Bezos and Sánchez's multi-day celebration could span multiple parties, TMZ reported, citing anonymous sources who told the outlet the couple is planning three themed parties, including a pajama party. The couple was photographed on Bezos' Koru yacht Sunday throwing a foam party, in which they and their friends were covered in foam bubbles while tossing around beach balls and swimming in the ocean. It's unclear whether the foam party was part of the wedding parties, or if it was a prelude to their wedding celebrations. How Much Will The Wedding Cost? Multiple reports have said the wedding will predictably cost millions of dollars. Reuters reported an estimated total cost of $46.5 million to $55.6 million. The Journal reported a luxury wedding with 200 guests such as Bezos' costs about $4 million, citing Jamie Simon, director of events at luxury planning firm Banana Split, which organized the multiday wedding between Sofia Richie Grainge and Atlantic Records CEO Elliot Grainge in 2023. The Journal reported Lanza & Baucina, a London-based group that planned George and Amal Clooney's 2014 wedding in Venice, has been hired by Bezos and Sánchez. A representative for the group told the Journal its principles and the instructions of Bezos call for the 'minimizing of any disruption to the city, the respect for its residents and institutions and the overwhelming employment of locals in the crafting of the events.' The 2014 wedding had a generally positive perception, with locals lauding Clooney for his consideration and respect for Venice. Cassará even compared Bezos to Clooney in his statement, saying Bezos 'is not George Clooney with his romantic aura.' Forbes Valuation We estimate Bezos' net worth at $231.4 billion as of Tuesday, making him the fourth-wealthiest person in the world behind Mark Zuckerberg ($250.5 billion), Larry Ellison ($256.3 billion) and Elon Musk ($411.1 billion). Key Background Bezos and Sánchez met almost 10 years ago and began making public appearances together around 2019, when the two began dating. They became engaged in 2023 aboard the Koru superyacht, with Bezos offering Sánchez a 30-carat cushion cut pink diamond set in platinum, according to Vanity Fair.
