Kendal: Lovingly Artisan bakery wins national award
A North West bakery which operates in Kendal has won a prestigious award for its dark chocolate malt with orange loaf.
Lovingly Artisan, which also has bakeries in Altrincham and Manchester, was crowned the winner of the flavoured sourdough category at the annual Britain's Best Loaf Award.
The category and overall champions were announced at the UK Food & Drink Shows on Tuesday, April 8, at the NEC Birmingham.
The winners from each of the eight award categories were selected from more than 200 entries in this year's 12th awards.
The award categories included flavoured sourdough, gluten free, innovation, international, plain sourdough, seeded sourdough, white and wholegrain.
Alongside the overall category winners' awards, gold, silver and bronze awards were also announced, recognising the quality of the loaves presented for judging.
This saw Lovingly Artisan collect a gold award for their dark rye berry loaf in the innovation category, a silver award in the wholegrain category for their malted barley sourdough, and a silver award in the flavoured sourdough category for their spiced apple and sultana sourdough.
The judges, remarking on Lovingly Artisan's win in the flavoured sourdough category, said: "This loaf secured the highly commended award in the 2024 competition, rising to become the category champion this year.
"Fragranced with Mediterranean orange peel, studded with Belgian chocolate and enriched with the natural sweetness of brewers' chocolate malt, this little tin loaf was made for luxurious weekends.
"As well as the divine flavour, the judges were won over by the technical ability demonstrated in the loaf, highlighting the baker's skill in producing a perfect bake."
Commenting on Lovingly Artisan Bakery's win, Aidan Monks and Catherine Connor, co-owners, said: "It's a real honour to win the overall flavoured sourdough category title, especially after collecting the highly commended award in 2024.
"Collecting a gold and two silver awards as well is the icing on the cake.
"As a bakery, we try to innovate and progress in everything we do.
"As a team, we share ideas and develop processes, all to deliver quality well-made breads to every single one of our customers.
"But as with any award like this, you're only as good as the people around you.
"Ours is a family business, and without the help of our bakery family, we wouldn't be where we are today as a business.
"So, I'd like to say a big thank you to every single member of the team for helping us deliver excellence in all that we do."
This year's expert judging panel included Amy North, editor of British Baker, Bertie Matthews, MD of Matthews Cotswold Flour, Clare Barton, owner of Bakehouse 124, Dan Riley, deputy editor of British Baker, and Dennis Everaers, from Rademaker.
Further judges included Gareth Edwards, from ADM Fillings, John Foster MBE, from Fosters Bakery, John Lamper, from ISB, Tesco, Louise West from National Food and Drink Training, and Neil Woods, a bakery consultant.
Nick Pearce from Brook Food & Bakery Equipment, Tom Martin from The Bread Factory, and William Leet from David Wood Baking also judged the competition.
Amy North, the editor of British Baker, said: "It was another record-breaking year for Britain's Best Loaf as we received more entries than ever.
"It certainly wasn't a case of quantity over quality, though, as the standard on display was outstanding."
She added: "I would like to thank the sponsors, judges, and entrants for not only making Britain's Best Loaf 2025 possible, but also making it a triumphant competition.
"The spectacular breads we saw were a real testament to the skill, commitment, and imagination of bakers across the UK."

The R&B star was seen looking back repeatedly before following Young Thug (real name Jeffrey Lamar Williams). Social media users slammed the interaction in the comments section of the video. 'He's literally dragging her along as if people wouldn't want pictures of her too….poor poor girl,' one person wrote. Another questioned, '[The photographers] were calling her name, why didn't he want her to take pictures.' 'She got the hottest R&B song out right now. This is her moment. 11 of the best and worst looks celebrities wore to the 2025 BET Awards
The 2025 BET Awards took place in Los Angeles on Monday. A-list stars attended the show in stylish and daring outfits. Keke Palmer and Doechii wore standout outfits, but other stars didn't look their best. The 2025 BET Awards were a night to remember. From performances by stars like Mariah Carey and Lil Wayne to a memorable speech from Doechii, the awards show, which took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, was full of music and heart. Actors, musicians, and athletes came together for the celebration, arriving in red-carpet looks designed to stun — but some looks were better than others. Take a look at some of the best and worst outfits celebrities wore to the 2025 BET Awards. Keke Palmer dazzled in a vintage Chanel minidress. Palmer arrived at the awards show in a minidress from Chanel's 1993 fall collection. The halter dress was sheer on the bodice, and silver sequins provided Palmer with some coverage. The sequins continued on the navy skirt and tulle train, which puffed out behind her to the mid-calf. Black, pointed-toe heels completed her sexy and fun look. Machine Gun Kelly's yellow top and coordinating tie were too casual. Keeping it simple on the red carpet isn't always a bad move, but Machine Gun Kelly's take on simplicity felt lackluster. He paired a butter yellow top and matching tie with wide-legged black pants and black shoes. The artist could have made his look stand out more with bolder accessories or a statement jacket. Mario's playful ensemble blended fabrics. Mario's custom House of Gray ensemble included a tailored olive green blouse with a subtle sheen and patterned pants. The contrasting patterns blended well, and Mario tied his outfit together with a statement brooch, a silver chain, and sunglasses. He looked glamorous and chic. The elements of Ciara's all-black look didn't work together. Ciara chose a Cong Tri ensemble for the BET Awards. The look included a black blouse, a miniskirt with layers of fringe and a train, heels laced around her ankles, and a sparkly Braves hat. The individual pieces of Ciara's outfit were all stylish, but together, they distracted from each other. The top and hat might have worked better with a pair of trousers rather than the bold skirt. T.I.'s blue suit would have been great with different accessories. T.I.'s powder blue suit from Hideoki Bespoke had a stripe of textured beige fabric across the jacket. He wore a white shirt under the jacket with no tie, and he paired brown boots with the look. The jacket's stripe should have been the focal point of the look, but the boots and lack of tie detracted from it. A tie that matched the stripe or lighter shoes could have brought it all together. Doechii looked effortlessly chic in a Miu Miu set. Doechii's stylish red set featured a bandana top and a low-waisted, pleated skirt that flared around her knees. Both had gold trim on the hem, and the top was embossed with "Miu Miu" in the same color. The "Anxiety" singer completed the outfit with a chained belt, chunky bracelets, brown sunglasses, and purple-flower-adorned heels. Snoop Dogg's monochromatic ensemble was stylish. Snoop Dogg wore a bright blue outfit that coordinated with his wife's look. The outfit featured a knee-length jacket, a blue top, loose-fitting pants, sneakers, and even blue sunglasses. It was put-together and stylish without feeling overly extravagant. There was too much going on in Cam Newton's floral outfit. Newton's fitted silver vest and pants were embroidered with colorful flowers. He wore the vest with no shirt and rolled his pants, and he accessorized the colorful look with green loafers, a polka-dot green neck scarf and tie, and an olive green hat. The vest and pants were pretty, but Newton's styling didn't let them shine. His various green accessories clashed, and he could have emphasized the floral pieces better with fewer, more neutral accessories. Ryan Destiny looked ethereal in a silver gown. Styled by Law Roach, Destiny walked the BET red carpet in a silver Loewe gown. The gown's silky fabric was billowing and ruched, but the dress also had some structured detailing, like a pointed neckline and a cinched waist. Gray pumps and silver jewelry completed the sleek and feminine ensemble. Tyler Perry arrived in a fashion-forward take on a tuxedo. Perry's Louis Vuitton look included wide-legged pants, a white blouse, a black bow tie, and a patterned jacket. The jacket was a fun alternative to a traditional suit. It had a zipper, a sparkly zig-zag pattern, and the LV logo on the chest. With statement sunglasses to complete it, Perry's outfit was both classic and fashion-forward. GloRilla looked daring and chic at the BET Awards. The halter bodice of GloRilla's black dress had tie fastenings that created crisscross cutouts down the center. Structured ruching on the waist spilled into a skirt with a thigh-high slit on one side. The slit spotlighted GloRilla's heels, which laced up her calves and coordinated with the dress. David Byrne Announces ‘Who Is the Sky?' Solo Album Featuring Hayley Williams, St. Vincent and Tom Skinner
Just days after performing the Talking Heads' 'Burning Down the House' with Olivia Rodrigo at New York's Governors Ball over the weekend David Byrne announced his 11th solo album, Who Is the Sky? The follow-up to Byrne's 2018 LP American Utopia is due out on Sept. 5 via Matador Records. Produced by Kid Harpoon (Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles), the 12-track album will feature collaborations with Paramore's Hayley Williams, St. Vincent and The Smile drummer Tom Skinner, with arrangements by the New York chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra. Byrne previewed the album on Tuesday (June 10) with a video for the universalist anthem about the emotions and feelings we all share. 'Someone I know said, 'David, you use the word 'everybody' a lot.' I suppose I do that to give an anthropological view of life in New York as we know it,' said Byrne in a statement announcing the album and the single. 'Everybody lives, dies, laughs, cries, sleeps and stares at the ceiling. Everybody's wearing everybody else's shoes, which not everybody does, but I have done. I tried to sing about these things that could be seen as negative in a way balanced by an uplifting feeling from the groove and the melody, especially at the end, when St. Vincent and I are doing a lot of hollering and singing together. Music can do that – hold opposites simultaneously. I realized that when singing with Robyn earlier this year. Her songs are often sad, but the music is joyous.' Producer Kid Harpoon (born Tom Hull) added, 'It took me a second to realize, oh yeah, these songs are personal, but with David's unique perspective on life in general. Walking around New York listening to the demo of 'Everybody Laughs' was so joyous, because it made me feel like we're all the same – we all laugh, cry and sing. The thing about David that resonates with a lot of people is that he's in on the joke. He gets the absurdity of it all, and all of these personal observations are his perspective on it.' Byrne said there are 'more story songs than usual' on the new album, tracks he describes as 'mini-narratives based on personal experience including 'She Explains Things to Me,' 'A Door Called No,' 'My Apartment Is My Friend' and 'I Met the Buddha at a Downtown Party.' The 'jaunty' song with Paramore's Williams, 'What Is the Reason For It?,' is focused on codifying 'love in a way logic can rarely accomplish.' 'Does it do something useful?/ Nobody understands,' goes one line from the song. 'I suspected that intimate orchestral arrangements would bring out the emotion I sense is there in these songs,' Byrne said. 'It's something that folks don't always hear in my work, but this time for sure I thought it was there. At the same time, I also see myself as someone who aspires to be accessible. I imagined that Kid Harpoon would help with that, as well as being a set of trusted ears, since there was a lot going on. People think of producers as people who mainly make a record sound good, and Kid Harpoon did that, but he was also aware of how important the storytelling is.' The collaboration with St. Vincent comes more than a decade after the two musicians teamed up for the 2012 album Love This Giant. Among the other contributors to the LP are American Utopia percussionist Mauro Refosco, who has toured and recorded with Byrne for more than three decades. 'At my age, at least for me, there's a 'don't give a s–t about what people think' attitude that kicks in,' Byrne said. 'I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I'm doing. That said, every new set of songs, every song even, is a new adventure. There's always a bit of, 'how do I work this?' I've found that not every collaboration works, but often when they do, it's because I'm able to clearly impart what it is I'm trying to do. They hopefully get that, and as a result, we're now joined together heading to the same unknown place.' Byrne will hit the road with a new live show featuring a 13-person troupe of musicians and dancers to support the album on a world tour slated to kick off on Sept. 14 at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence, R.I.
