More large mammals once roamed Saudi Arabia than previously thought

RIYADH: Three times more large mammal species once roamed Saudi Arabia than previously thought, according to a new study.
The research, conducted in Thuwal, identifies 15 large mammal species that inhabited the Arabian Peninsula over the last 10,000 years.
It was published on May 12 in the Journal of Biogeography by researchers from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and Taibah University.
The findings have potential implications for rewilding efforts in the Kingdom, KAUST said in a statement.
Among the identified species, the majority hail from Africa, including notable predators like lions and cheetahs.
The study also highlights two new species previously unrecognized in the region: the greater kudu and the Somali wild ass.
Currently, the Arabian Peninsula has successfully reintroduced the Arabian oryx and has plans to reintroduce the cheetah.
However, the other 13 species will require careful evaluation to determine their potential for reintroduction.
'Restoration efforts extend beyond vegetation; animals are essential to maintaining healthy ecosystems,' emphasized Christopher Clarke, senior project manager at KAUST and a key contributor to the study.
'By identifying the large mammals that have gone extinct, we provide crucial data for governments to consider which species could be reintroduced in the future.'
To reach their findings, Clarke and his colleague, Sultan M. Al-Sharif, an associate professor at Taibah University, meticulously analyzed thousands of petroglyphs — ancient rock carvings — gathered from scientific expeditions, published resources, and even social media, where amateur archaeologists have shared their discoveries.
This approach enabled the researchers to access a wealth of petroglyphs previously unknown to the scientific community.
'Our research reveals that the Arabian Peninsula was far more diverse in large mammals than previously imagined,' said Al-Sharif.

We are now closer to the vastness of space than ever before. More nations are expressing interest and participating in space activities. Additionally, more astronauts are venturing into space, with exploration no longer limited to select countries but opening up to many nations and even individuals. Public-private partnerships are transforming the space sector, with companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic offering opportunities for private citizens to travel to space. Increasing international collaboration is also playing a key role. Saudi Arabia's first mission took the first Muslim and Arab astronaut, Prince Sultan bin Salman, into space aboard NASA's Discovery Shuttle. More recently, Ali Al-Qarni and Rayyanah Barnawi — the first female Arab in space — participated in the Axiom-2 mission. Saudi Arabia is also a signatory to the Artemis Accords, along with more than 50 other nations, paving the way for deep space and lunar missions and research. International cooperation is expanding opportunities for other countries as well; Pakistan was recently announced as the first foreign nation to have a citizen conduct research on China's space station. Being an international space medicine and health educator, mentor, and researcher, I would like to highlight that a critical prerequisite at the core of all future human missions is the health and well-being of the humans in space. This is especially important as Saudi Arabia advances its space sector, furthering research and its astronaut program in support of Vision 2030. In my recent publication in one of the world's distinguished scientific journals, I focused on keeping astronauts healthy in space. It highlights the human physiological, health, and psychological challenges inherent in space. The publication also explores the specific complexities of deep space environments, where scientific understanding of human health, sustained radiation exposure, and other unprecedented difficulties remains notably limited. Key challenges in deep space missions include studies showing significantly higher daily radiation exposure on the lunar and Martian surfaces compared to Earth. We must also develop innovative approaches for healthcare delivery in space. Traditionally reliant on telemedicine and Earth-based support, such systems face major limitations due to communication delays — with signals between Mars and Earth taking up to 20 minutes one way — making Earth-dependent care inefficient in medical emergencies. One solution is to incorporate advanced artificial intelligence for autonomous medical assistance, a domain in which Saudi Arabia is actively investing through initiatives like its National Strategy for Data and AI. Another key area of concern is the mood and mental health challenges. Human missions to Mars will face many stressors, including the long duration away from loved ones, with the trip itself taking around 7–10 months in a confined space. I have heard some find it tiring to drive from Jeddah to Riyadh in a car for almost 10 hours — so how would you feel being stuck in that limited space non-stop for 10 months? Reflecting on confined space, I am reminded of Prince Sultan's quote about his mission: 'You miss space most in space.' My deep interest and experience in space medicine and health originate from a foundational conviction — reinforced by being a medical doctor, academic, and space medicine educator and researcher — that the optimal health of astronauts will always take precedence in any human space mission, regardless of how advanced our engineering, policies, or propulsion systems are. If an astronaut's health is compromised, even the most technologically advanced mission will be put on hold. No crewed space mission would receive approval until we ensure astronauts' health and well-being can be maintained throughout the mission. Consequently, space medicine, life sciences, and health are not merely significant; they are absolutely indispensable for Saudi Arabia's future in space. For these reasons, I strongly recommend that Saudi Arabia prioritize developing its own robust capabilities in this field. Establishing national capacity in this critical domain is crucial for future endeavors, and I am ready to bring my expertise to help develop and drive this vision forward. — Dr. Farhan M. Partnerships for lasting environmental protection

Environmental challenges know no borders. From rising temperatures to biodiversity loss, these issues demand collective action. In Saudi Arabia, we are responding to this global call through a model grounded in partnership, collaborating with international organizations, scientific institutions and private innovators to deliver lasting environmental protection. Under Vision 2030, the Kingdom has embarked on a transformative journey to decarbonize its economy and restore its ecosystems. But what is especially powerful is how this journey is being shaped not only by local resolve but by global cooperation. Across ministries, research centers and giga-projects, Saudi Arabia is partnering with the world to deliver outcomes that serve both people and planet. At the heart of Saudi Arabia's environmental agenda is the Saudi Green Initiative — a program aiming to plant 10 billion trees, rehabilitate 40 million hectares of degraded land, and reduce carbon emissions by more than 278 million tonnes per year. SGI has aligned with global partners such as the UN Environment Programme, UNFCCC and the World Economic Forum's platform, helping to situate the Kingdom's afforestation and restoration efforts within a broader planetary framework. Agricultural resilience is also receiving international support. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture works closely with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN on sustainable aquaculture and dryland farming. Through its participation in the Global Soil Partnership, Saudi Arabia is contributing to global knowledge on soil health in arid regions — a vital issue for food security in a warming world. Progress would be impossible without science. The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology has emerged as a world-class partner in marine science, working with multiple entities to inform data-driven conservation. Their work with the Kingdom's smart city, NEOM, for example, includes coral reef restoration and coastal habitat mapping powered by advanced robotics and AI. On the wildlife front, the National Center for Wildlife is collaborating with the International Union for Conservation of Nature and CITES to safeguard native species. From Arabian oryx reintroductions to hawksbill turtle protection, these programs are helping to rebuild the Kingdom's ecological heritage. Similarly, the National Center for Vegetation Cover and Combating Desertification has been instrumental in driving desert restoration. Through its leadership role in the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, and as the host of COP16, Saudi Arabia is demonstrating how arid nations can lead in the global fight against land degradation. Its mangrove and seagrass restoration pilots are already informing policy across the region. In my role as group chief environment and sustainability officer at Red Sea Global, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of collaboration. Our flagship regenerative tourism destinations — The Red Sea and AMAALA — are not only redefining travel but also setting new standards for environmental stewardship. Sustainability is embedded in every stage of our projects, from development to daily operations. Whether it is through the use of renewable energy, innovative waste management systems or biodiversity conservation, our goal is to reduce our environmental footprint and ensure the long-term health of the region. Our commitment is demonstrated through continuous environmental monitoring, strong partnerships and bold sustainability targets. From government ministries to giga-projects, we are inviting the world to join us — not just as observers, but as co-creators of a greener future. Raed Albasseet We worked with KAUST to conduct the largest marine spatial planning simulation ever undertaken in Saudi Arabia, allowing us to design with precision and avoid ecological harm. We are also among the first developers in the world to have all operational resorts LEED-certified, working closely with the US Green Building Council to achieve the highest sustainability standards. Today, we hold the most LEED Platinum–certified hospitality assets of any single developer globally. Beyond our project sites, our environmental team contributes to the global knowledge base through peer-reviewed research and international conferences, including the International Association for Impact Assessment, where we have shared scientific insights on regenerative development and large-scale conservation planning. Through our partnership with The Ocean Race, we are advancing ocean literacy among Saudi youth, while positioning AMAALA as host of the Race's 2027 Grand Finale. On the infrastructure side, our multi-utilities agreement with EDF Group and Masdar enables AMAALA to be powered entirely by the sun, eliminating 350,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year. And through our collaboration with the National Livestock and Fisheries Development Program, we are embedding sustainable fishing practices into the heart of our destination's food systems — protecting biodiversity while supporting local livelihoods. These efforts form only a fraction of Saudi Arabia's broader journey. But they reflect a truth I believe in deeply: When knowledge, resources and values are shared across borders, we can do more than sustain the environment — we can regenerate it. Saudi Arabia's environmental transformation is still unfolding, but the trajectory is clear. It is a story of shared responsibility. From government ministries to giga-projects, we are inviting the world to join us — not just as observers, but as co-creators of a greener future. People must see themselves in the AI revolution

President Donald Trump's historic visit to Saudi Arabia was not merely another high-profile diplomatic stop. It was a signal, one that reverberates far beyond ceremonial pageantry or economic accords. With a sweeping agenda anchored in regional security and technological advancement, the visit marked a profound turning point: the introduction of artificial intelligence as a centerpiece in reimagining international alliances and national futures. As Saudi Arabia deepens its strategic commitment to AI, the spotlight now turns to a less discussed — yet far more consequential — question: Who truly owns the AI revolution? For too long, the narrative has belonged to technologists. From Silicon Valley labs to national AI strategies, the story of AI has been told in the language of algorithms, architectures, and compute. And while the technical infrastructure is essential, we argue that such a narrow view of AI is not only incomplete, it is dangerous. When the American Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum was launched in the US in 2016, the institutional landscape for AI was highly specialized. Data scientists, computer engineers, and mathematicians dominated the discourse. Policymakers and business leaders, overwhelmed by complexity, often stood at a distance. AI was regarded as something technical — a toolset, a model, an optimization system. The same pattern is now emerging in Saudi Arabia and across the Gulf. Government agencies are in search of use cases. Consultants are offering solutions in search of problems. Infrastructure projects are underway to create sovereign large language models and national AI platforms. In these efforts, AI is often reduced to a software engineering challenge — or worse, a procurement exercise. But this lens fails to capture the essence of the revolution underway. What's at stake is not simply how nations compute. It's how they think, organize, and act in a new age of machine cognition. We've long argued that AI cannot — and must not — be the exclusive domain of technologists. A true revolution occurs only when the masses engage. Just as the internet went mainstream not through protocols and standards, but through wide-scale adoption and imaginative use, AI must be demystified and integrated into the fabric of society. It is neither feasible nor necessary to turn an entire nation into data scientists. We need a nation of informed leaders, innovators, teachers, managers, and citizens who can speak the language of AI, not in code, but in context. This conviction led AIAIQ to become the world's first applied AI institute focused not on producing more PhDs, but on educating professionals across sectors — from finance and healthcare to logistics and public service. Our mission was clear: to build a movement of AI adoption engineering, centered on human understanding, social responsibility, and economic impact. History has shown that every technological revolution requires more than invention. It requires meaning. When the automobile first arrived in America, it was met with skepticism. Roads were unprepared. Public opinion was divided. Without storytelling, explanation, and cultural adaptation, the car might have remained a niche novelty. AI is no different, but the stakes are higher. Unlike past revolutions, AI directly threatens to reshape or eliminate jobs across virtually all sectors. It raises moral questions about decision-making, power, privacy, and the nature of intelligence itself. Without a serious effort to prepare populations, the result will be confusion, fear, and backlash. Adoption is not just about teaching Python or TensorFlow. It is about building cognitive readiness in society — a collective ability to make sense of AI as a force that operates both with us and around us. What's at stake is not simply how nations compute. It's how they think, organize, and act in a new age of machine cognition. Ali Naqvi and Mohammed Al-Qarni AIAIQ's work in the US, and now in the Kingdom, reflects this ethos. We don't approach AI as a product to be sold. We approach it as a paradigm to be understood, negotiated, and lived. Over nearly a decade of pioneering applied AI education, we've identified four essential elements for ensuring that technological revolutions — especially this one — take root meaningfully within society. People need help interpreting what AI actually is and how it is changing their world. It's not just a black box; it's a new kind of collaborator, a new model of thought. Technologies cannot remain in labs or behind firewalls. They must be translated into the language and workflow of everyday people. Mass understanding is more vital than mass compute. Every revolution carries moral implications. If not carefully navigated, AI can create a deep dissonance between traditional societal values and new forms of digital governance. Above all, people must see themselves in the revolution. They must feel empowered to participate, to lead, and to shape what comes next. Much has been made of 'sovereign AI' — the ambition of nations to build homegrown LLMs and nationalized data infrastructure. Several Gulf nations are investing heavily in this vision. And yet, we caution: True sovereignty is not measured by the size of your datacenter, but by the sophistication of your human capital. You can localize your AI stack, but unless you cultivate a generation of researchers, engineers, business innovators, and public thinkers, your systems will be technologically impressive but strategically hollow. Sovereignty is about stewardship. That requires education, experimentation, and the freedom to adapt. As Saudi Arabia targets massive economic transformation, the challenge is not just to build smart systems, but to build a smart society that knows what to do with them. President Trump's visit, and the unprecedented alignment between American and Saudi priorities around AI, is not just symbolic. It marks a deeper shift in how global partnerships are defined. Oil once defined alliances. Now, intelligence — both human and machine — will. For the first time, nations are collaborating not to dominate territory, but to co-develop cognition. The tools may be digital, but the outcome will be profoundly human. The alignment between global and local initiatives in Saudi Arabia represents a shared belief that the future is not only coded in silicon but shaped in classrooms, boardrooms, war rooms, and living rooms. The AI revolution is coming. But it must belong to the people.
