'We won't stand for this': Politicians support North East family against online hate

Politicians have taken a stand against an online hate campaign directed at a Redcar family, spreading misinformation and lies.
A couple from Redcar were visiting a local park where they made a TikTok video, which was subsequently altered and spread across social media with false paedophilic accusations.
The Northern Echo previously reported how the couple, Natalie and Olajuwon Ayeni, 52 and 35, are 'living in fear', after online trolls spread false accusations about their innocent family outing.
Natalie (Right) and Olajuwon (Left) Ayeni (Image: Say Something)The harassment escalated when Tommy Robinson, also known as Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, shared the video to his 1.4 million followers.
The couple have since been threatened in the street, and are now too scared to leave their home.
The impact of these allegations also saw Olajuwon lose his job as a musician, when his management suspended business until the matter is resolved.
Matt Storey (Image: Newsquest) Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner, Matt Storey, spoke out in support of the couple.
"This kind of disinformation online is extremely worrying because it's becoming more and more prevalent," he said.
"It shows the lengths which the far-right are willing to stoop that they would fake a video like this and put a completely innocent family at risk of serious danger and threat.
"It's difficult to comprehend how you take your kids to the park so innocently and that video is taken and fixed to spin these lies.
"It makes me incredibly angry to see the toxic atmosphere on social media, and it's driven by these far-right actors who just want to drive wedges between people and use diversity as something they can exploit.
"What [Redcar and Cleveland MP] Anna Turley has done is a great job, and we need more politicians to stand up as strong advocates for these people at risk of hate and prejudice. I represent them and everyone in Cleveland, and I want to make sure they know I'm supportive of them. I won't stand for this kind of hate.
"It's up to politicians like myself to stand up for these communities and make sure the far-right aren't successful in demonising people like the Ayeni's. We can come together on behalf of families like this and say we won't stand for this. It's unacceptable and we can't allow the far-right's poisonous messages of hate to settle."
Anna Turley (Image: ANNA TURLEY) Redcar and Cleveland MP Ms Turley said that Redcar should be suitable for families "whatever the colour of your skin".
She said: "Blended families of all shapes and sizes have the right to enjoy a happy day in our park without suffering vile racism.
"I'm heartbroken for the Ayeni family who've been targeted and abused because of Tommy Robinson's poisonous lies. This is what he and his followers do day in, day out – take an innocent family video, crop it, and use it to whip up hate and division.
"Well not here, not off the back of Redcar families. There's no place for hate in our town."

Despite appeals explaining the nature of the footage, Robinson and others who shared the video have yet to take it down.
Cleveland Police said they have 'implemented a full wraparound support package' in response to the threats the family have been receiving.
Cleveland Police urged social media users to refrain from further sharing either the video or any incorrect information about the people featured.

Leader of 'cult-like' UK Christian group guilty of sexually abusing women

By Sam Tobin LONDON (Reuters) -The leader of a "cult-like" Christian group once backed by the Church of England has been convicted of sexually abusing nine women in his congregation, after a jury returned their final verdicts on Thursday. Chris Brain, 68, led the Nine O'Clock Service, an evangelical church movement based in Sheffield, northern England, in the 1980s and 1990s. The group's nightclub-style services, which were held at 9 p.m. on Sundays, were aimed at young people, featured a live band and attracted hundreds of people at its peak. But, prosecutors said, Brain controlled members of the congregation, cutting them off from family and friends, and abused his position to sexually assault "a staggering number of women". Brain also had a "homebase team" of young women who looked after him, his wife and daughter at their house in Sheffield, who were dubbed "the lycra nuns", prosecutor Tim Clark said. He was charged with 36 counts of indecent assault and one count of rape relating to 13 women between 1981 and 1995. He denied the charges and said any sexual contact was consensual. After a trial at the Inner London Crown Court, Brain was convicted on Wednesday of 17 charges of indecent assault relating to nine women. He was acquitted of a further 15 counts. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the remaining four counts of indecent assault and the alleged rape, Britain's Crown Prosecution Service said on Thursday, adding it would "carefully consider" a retrial. 'FAILING OF THE CHURCH' The Nine O'Clock Service had the blessing of the Church of England. Prosecutors said in 1990 that the Archbishop of Canterbury-elect, George Carey, had met Brain to discuss his methods. Brain's ordination was fast-tracked and the Nine O'Clock Service spent "large sums of money" to obtain the outfit worn by actor Robert De Niro for the 1986 film 'The Mission' for the ceremony, prosecutors said. But Brain resigned and left the church days before the broadcast of a 1995 BBC documentary, which accused him of sexually inappropriate behaviour. Carey said he was "crushed and let down" when the allegations were made public. In his evidence, Brain said he received massages from members of the Nine O'Clock Service, which he said occasionally moved towards sexual activity. He also denied controlling or manipulating members of the congregation. "What happened was an appalling abuse of power and leadership that should never have occurred," Bishop of Sheffield Pete Wilcox said in a statement. "Where concerns were raised in the past and were not acted upon properly, that was a failing of the Church. For those institutional failures I offer an unreserved apology." Former priest ‘instilled culture of fear' enabling him to sexually abuse women

A former priest convicted of sexual offences against nine women 'instilled a culture of fear' within church members which enabled him to abuse his victims, the Crown Prosecution Service has said. Christopher Brain, 68, from Wilmslow, Cheshire, was the leader of the Nine O'Clock Service (NOS), part of the Church of England, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, between 1986 and 1995. On Wednesday, he was found guilty of 17 counts of indecent assault during the years he led the movement by a jury at Inner London Crown Court. The former priest was cleared of a further 15 counts of indecent assault. The following day, the 11-strong jury was discharged after failing to reach a verdict on five more counts, having started deliberations on August 12. In total, Brain was charged with one count of rape and 36 counts of indecent assault between 1981 and 1995 against 13 women. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. Julie Moss, senior crown prosecutor of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: 'Chris Brain abused the trust and power he gained as a religious leader to sexually exploit and abuse young women. 'He instilled a culture of fear to subjugate and control NOS members into submission and to do his bidding. 'Brain discouraged members of the Nine O Clock service from having any contact with family or friends outside of the NOS community to isolate members them and make them susceptible to his control.' Ms Moss said Brain had set up a 'home base team' where he required female NOS members to assist his household, including 'attending upon him in his bedroom' before he slept, which is when many of the offences occurred. She added: 'The victims were too scared of being excluded from the religious group to refuse. 'This became known as the 'putting to bed rota'. 'Brain clearly engaged in controlling behaviour and is a narcissist who subjected his victims to awful and horrendous act of sexual violence. 'We hope that these convictions help in some part to see justice delivered for the victims.' Addressing the jury on Thursday, Judge Freya Newbery said: 'I am going to discharge you now on those counts. For you it all comes to an end now. 'I am really grateful for such a lot of time that you have given.' Ms Newbury gave the jurors the option of exemption from jury service if summoned within the next 10 years. A further hearing to determine whether prosecutors believe there are grounds for a retrial for the charges was set for September 4.

The latest migration stats are going in the wrong direction - and the argument might get more vicious

The UK government won't find much in this latest dump of migration data to back up its claim that it is restoring order to a broken asylum system. In a competitive field, perhaps the most damaging stat is the rising number of small boat crossings - up 38% on 12 months previously and close to the peaks of 2023. That has helped push up asylum applications to record levels, which in turn has led to a rise in the use of hotel accommodation. Politics live: Deportations are up, but more than half of the total figure is foreign national offenders rather than failed asylum seekers. The backlog for initial decisions is coming down. But the approval rate for those applying for asylum after arriving on a small boat is still hovering around the 65% mark. Another bottleneck is also forming as more people appeal their initial rejections - and require accommodation while they wait for an outcome. This all helps explain why people are still taking the risk of crossing the channel in the first place. It's still highly likely that if you get to the UK, you'll be able to stay. The row over the use of hotels is a product of this underlying problem. And if you thought that argument was vicious, just wait for the one that could follow if asylum seekers start to be moved out of hotels and into houses and flats in areas that already have a shortage of homes. It's why the only real endgame for the government is to find a way to stop people coming in the first place. Increased numbers of returns, including through the UK-France deal, could provide some deterrent. Read more: Beefed-up action to dismantle smuggling gangs and reforms to the time it takes for appeals to be heard will help too. So far though, all the figures that count are going in the wrong direction. What's more, there's some evidence that the data is looking particularly painful for Labour in some of its most vulnerable areas. A look down the list of councils with relatively high numbers of asylum seekers reveals several key election battlegrounds in the Midlands and North. These are regions where Reform is already campaigning hard. The stakes are high, and as it stands the government is being found wanting.
