KWA writes off Rs 167cr water bill arrears of Kochi corporation
Kochi: In a major relief to Kochi corporation, KWA has decided to write off water bill arrears of local body, which amounts to around Rs 167 crore. Corporation's water bills, mainly those for public water taps, were pending since 2011.

The decision was made during a meeting between corporation authorities and KWA officials in May. Govt had already cut Rs 45 crore from general purpose grant and non-road maintenance allotment to corporation to adjust water bill arrears of civic body. Moreover, KWA was required to deposit around Rs 60 lakh for carrying out various works, but the authority didn't pay it to corporation. It was without deducting these amounts that KWA put the bills, including arrears, at Rs 167 crore.
All these issues were discussed during the meeting.
KWA was charging bills for 5,445 public water taps in the city. At the same time, there is a dispute over the manner in which KWA is calculating water bills. "In the past few years, actual number of public water taps in the city has come down as more households are using individual water connections and need for public water taps has decreased. Still, KWA calculated bills based on the old number.
The authority lacks proof to substantiate their claim that there are 5,445 in the city.
All these issues were brought to the attention of KWA. This might be the reason for KWA writing off water bill arrears till March 31, 2025," said corporation UDF parliamentary party secretary M G Aristotle.
A couple of years ago, KWA and corporation conducted a joint inspection to identify actual number of public water taps in the city. It was then found that number of public water taps in the city had dipped by more than 50%.

Sources said the foodgrain production has reached a record high of 143 lakh tonne in 2023-24. The foodgrains include paddy, maize, pulses and other coarse cereals. He said state is focusing on oilseeds production. Farm diversification, skill devpt will help Odisha become $500bn eco by 2036: CM
1 2 As you enter the second year in office, what are your priorities? Our primary focus will be to build upon the successful initiatives we've already established, particularly in three key areas — commitment to social development, specifically expanding farmer welfare programmes; advancing women's empowerment initiatives and creating employment opportunities for our youth. Secondly, we're prioritising infrastructure development by strengthening healthcare facilities, improving educational institutions and enhancing transportation networks. Thirdly, we're focused on economic growth by ensuring promised industrial investments are implemented to create a robust foundation for sustainable development. We are working toward our vision of achieving a US$ 500 billion economy by 2036. To achieve this economic dream, you need double digit growth, far more than the projected 8-8.5% this year. What is the roadmap? I understand it's not so easy. Transforming our economy presents significant challenges. Currently, our economy relies heavily on agriculture, with 75% of the population dependent on farming, primarily single-crop paddy cultivation. To address this imbalance, we are implementing a two-pronged approach. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Tome isso 1x ao dia se tem mais de 40 anos Portal Saúde do Homem Clique aqui Undo First, we are promoting agricultural diversification by encouraging farmers to cultivate non-paddy cash crops. Second, we are investing in skill development programmes to create a balanced workforce across farming, industrial and service sectors. Unlike our predecessors, we are expanding govt sector employment. They are needed to effectively implement our vision. Additionally, we are working diligently to materialise investment commitments exceeding Rs 16 lakh crore, which will further support this economic transformation. Investment promises have failed to yield results in the past. What makes you so confident? There is a fundamental difference between our govt and that of the predecessors. While the BJD govt engaged in vote-bank politics and showed little commitment in implementing real change, we are dedicated to turning promises into concrete actions. With strong willpower and the backing of the central govt, we are prepared to go above and beyond to achieve our goals. Our robust mining sector serves as a cornerstone for our economy, and we plan to leverage this strength by expanding mine auctions and optimising revenue from minor minerals. How do you plan to achieve urbanisation plan of 40% population by 2036, which is less than 20% now? Expansion of Bhubaneswar and development of new urban centres across Odisha will be driven by strategic industrialisation and service sector growth. Significant step in this direction is the planned satellite city at Khurda-Gothapatna, where land has already been earmarked through various schemes. In central Bhubaneswar, near Rajmahal Square, plans are underway to establish a world-class market complex and IT hub. Additionally, 4-5 nodal cities will be developed across the state, each supported by region-specific industries. Infra projects like a second AIIMS, another central university and a second agricultural university had been promised in the manifesto. What is the status? Govt has been working in close coordination to ensure that promises are met. When I said infrastructure is a focus, all these are part of that. We have already started the process to set up a second AIIMS. It will come up as promised. Besides, our govt is committed to have medical colleges in all 30 districts in a phased manner. Similarly, existing medical colleges and higher educational institutions will be improved. There is nothing in the manifesto, which will not be fulfilled. There is communal tension in Bhadrak while gastroenteritis has taken a toll in Jajpur... Govt has taken both these developments very seriously, though these are isolated incidents. After BJP govt came to power, Bhadrak was only the second such communal incident after the one in Sambalpur. Our govt is committed to ensure everybody, irrespective of community, feels at home in Odisha. The govt has taken proactive steps. There were some administrative changes after the Bhadrak incident. A package has been announced for family of a youth who was killed. Regarding diarrhoea in Jajpur, govt has deployed additional health experts to contain the situation. Congress has termed your first year as one of deceit while BJD chief Naveen Patnaik has criticised you for making long speeches? The Congress party's state leadership is struggling with internal divisions and lacks a clear identity. Their attempts to capture public attention seem more performative than substantive. When I speak at length, it's because I genuinely represent all Odisha residents and maintain complete transparency. Unlike some others in the past, I don't rely on prepared statements from officials. My grass-roots background has given me deep insight into the real situations people face. Though I may not have extensive administrative experience, I have a clear vision and a thorough understanding of the challenges facing our people. CM exhorts students to protect public property
Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday exhorted students to protect public property, saying these are collective assets and damaging them harm the nation. "Do not damage national property. If someone is doing so, stop them. If you feel powerless, report it. Share a photo, we will handle the rest and recover the damages. Public property is national property and a collective responsibility," he said. He was speaking during a function to felicitate meritorious students, who excelled in state and national board exams, and the 68th National School Sports Competition 2024-25 held in Ranchi this Jan. Speaking about the transformation of education in UP, Yogi said over the past 8 years, the condition and working of schools and secondary education has changed dramatically. "Before 2017, basic education was in decline and secondary education was marred by widespread cheating. Earlier govts introduced two major 'businesses' in UP, one of cheating and the other of transfer-posting. Exam centres were operated on a wholesale basis for cheating. External candidates filled out forms, and someone else appeared in their place for the exams. Simultaneously, transfer and posting became an entire industry. The BJP govt cracked down on these industries and brought in fair practices," he said. Yogi added that at exam centres, various mechanisms like CCTV surveillance, boundary walls, adequate infrastructure, and proper furniture, have been put in place to prevent cheating. "Exams that used to stretch over two to three months are now completed within 13-14 days," he said. Highlighting the state of recruitment in the state, the CM said over 8 lakh were given govt jobs across sectors. On June 15, 60,244 police personnel will be receiving appointment letters in the presence of Union home minister Amit Shah. Among these, over 12,000 are women. Calling the result of the Board exams "surprising" where girls performed better than boys, the CM awarded Rs 1,00,000 in cash, a tablet, a certificate of appreciation, and a medal to students who ranked in the merit list. At the district level, meritorious students received Rs 21,000 in cash, a tablet, a certificate, and a medal. To the gold medalists of the National School Sports Competition, the govt awarded Rs 75,000 to gold winners, Rs 50,000 to silver and Rs 30,000 to bronze medalists. In team events, the prize money was Rs 35,000 for gold, Rs 25,000 for silver, and Rs 15,000 for bronze. The CM also laid the foundation stone for the new buildings of the UP Secondary Sanskrit Education Council, established in 2001, and its directorate. The new complex will cost Rs over 42 crore and will include a Sanskrit library, facilities for training, conversation and other programmes. A new building for the Government Girls Intermediate College will be constructed on Jagat Narayan Road in Lucknow under 'Project Alankar' at an outlay of Rs 48.92 crore. Alos, the govt has allocated Rs 10.36 crore for a new building of Government Girls Inter College, Malihabad. Around Rs 20 crore is being spent on two new Sanskrit schools with hostels in Chandauli and Bhadohi. The CM also announced an MoU between the secondary education department, Tata Nelco, and Japan's Yaskawa under which students will have the opportunity of learning skills along with academics. Under this initiative, the govt will establish design, robotics, and electronics labs in govt secondary schools, with an investment of Rs 162.72 crore. Based on the 'Hub and Spoke' model, one institution will house the lab and be connected with three other institutions. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
