Two teens accused of six-hour gang-rape of 17-year-old girl in Sydney denied bail

Two men accused of gang raping a teenage girl for hours in a vehicle remained expressionless while denied bail for being deemed a danger to the community.
Adam Abdul-Hamid, 19, and an 18-year-old male who cannot be legally named are among four youths accused of the six-hour-long sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl at multiple Sydney locations in December 2024.
Both appeared by audio-visual link at separate court hearings on Tuesday when their bail was denied.
At Campbelltown local court, magistrate Peter Thompson found the risk that Abdul-Hamid posed to the community if he was released from Silverwater prison could not be mitigated.
Magistrate Rosheehan O'Meagher at Parramatta children's court made similar findings against the 18-year-old.
Bail was rejected despite a raft of strict conditions proposed for each co-accused by their barrister Troy Edwards SC.
Crown prosecutor Abby Lee van der Velde argued Abdul-Hamid should not be released because he was the only adult present during the alleged 'prolonged and sustained sexual assault'.
The barber shop employee had not tried to intervene and had allegedly taken the victim's phone to send himself a text message, Thompson heard.
Material provided by his family to the court describing the 19-year-old as a responsible and affectionate person lay in contrast to the seriousness of the charges, van der Velde said.
Edwards unsuccessfully tried to argue the bail conditions were enough to mitigate any risk his client posed.
He described the case against his client as 'weak', saying there was no evidence he agreed to participate in the alleged crime.
'Do you want to have a turn?' Abdul-Hamid was allegedly asked, according to a police facts sheet seen by the court.
'No, I'm alright,' he allegedly replied.
In a later covertly recorded phone conversation, Abdul-Hamid inculpated the other males involved in the alleged assault, the court was told.
Despite seven months elapsing since the alleged assault, the 19-year-old had not tried to contact the complainant or his co-accused, Mr Edwards said.
Abdul-Hamid has been hit with five charges of aggravated sexual assault in company but has yet to enter any pleas.
Two of these alleged offences involve the use of a hair brush.
Outside court, the 19-year-old's mother and two brothers wore face masks and shielded themselves with umbrellas, swearing at reporters before getting into a waiting car and driving off.
The 18-year-old male - who has been hit with nine charges of aggravated sexual assault in company - allegedly joined the sexual assault after being told about it through Facetime, Ms O'Meagher was told.
As his mother and partner watched in court, van der Velde said the youth had been captured on CCTV, placing him at the scene.
Police allege that the girl was initially approached by a 16-year-old boy, unknown to her, at a shopping centre in Liverpool on a Sunday evening.
The boy allegedly asked to be driven to a park at a nearby suburb, which the victim agreed to, on the understanding he would get out of the car.
At the park, two other males got into the car and allegedly also sexually assaulted her.
A fourth male arrived in another car and the assaults continued as the girl was driven around for six hours, investigators allege.
The 16-year-old alleged instigator of the rape has been charged with 19 sexual assault offences and five sexual touching offences.
A 14-year-old has been charged with 10 offences including seven aggravated sexual assault offences.
Abdul-Hamid's matter will return to court on 13 August.
His three co-accused will have their cases briefly heard on 11 August.

BREAKING NEWS Karmelo Anthony formally charged with MURDER for stabbing Austin Metcalf in high school crime that stunned the country

Karmelo Anthony, the teen who has admitted to stabbing and killing a fellow high school athlete at a track meet in Texas, has been indicted by a grand jury with first-degree murder. Austin Metcalf, 17, bled out in his brother's arms after the attack by Anthony. Fricso, Texas police have said the incident stemmed from Metcalf asking Anthony to leave his team tent since he didn't go to the same school. Anthony, 17 at the time of the killing and now 18, was arrested shortly after and charged by police with first degree murder in a case that has drawn national attention over race and privilege. Today's indictment comes after the local district attorney presented evidence to a grand jury, asking jurors to uphold the first-degree murder charge. 'For weeks, my team has been presenting evidence to the grand jury. Today, I summarized that evidence, and I asked the Grand Jury to return a first degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony— which they did, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a press released Tuesday afternoon. 'With that indictment, the case now moves formally into the court system. From this point forward, we'll continue doing our part — fully and fairly — to pursue justice under the law. The trial schedule will be set by the court. But when the time comes, we'll be ready.'

Hunt for Travis Decker looks at whether he left Washington mountains — or died evading police

Authorities who have spent the past three weeks searching in the mountains of Washington state for an ex-soldier wanted in the deaths of his three young daughters say there is no evidence that he remains in the area or that he is alive at all. Travis Decker, 32, has been wanted since June 2, when a sheriff's deputy found his truck and the bodies of his three daughters — 9-year-old Paityn Decker, 8-year-old Evelyn Decker and 5-year-old Olivia Decker — at a campground outside Leavenworth. The discovery came three days after he failed to return the girls to their mother's home in Wenatchee, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Seattle, following a scheduled visit. 'There is no certain evidence that Decker remains alive or in this area,' the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office said in a social media post late Monday. 'Seemingly strong early leads gave way to less convincing proofs over the last two weeks of searching. Still, we can't and won't quit this search; Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia Decker deserve justice. And Decker remains a danger to the public as long as he's at large.' The post said resources were being shifted to focus on finding Decker's remains 'if he died in the rugged wilderness during this intense search — a possibility that increases every day.' The U.S. Marshals Service is working to track down Decker if he managed to escape the region, the sheriff's office said, and extra patrols have been on duty. It would not be unprecedented for Decker to evade a search in the rugged, remote region for three weeks; the area is dotted with abandoned buildings as well as unoccupied vacation homes in which he might find shelter. In 2020, Jorge Alacantara-Gonzalez, who was wanted in the killing of a turkey hunter, spent 23 days on the run in much of the same terrain. He was finally caught when someone called police to report seeing someone in a cabin that should have been unoccupied. Authorities looking for Decker say they are similarly relying on tips from the public to help find him. They have asked people to be alert in the backcountry and to check surveillance or game cameras on their properties. Earlier this month, hikers in a popular Cascade Range backpacking area called The Enchantments reported seeing a lone person who appeared to be ill-prepared for the conditions and seemed to be avoiding others. A helicopter crew responded and spotted an off-trail hiker near an alpine lake. The person ran from sight as the helicopter passed, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said. Authorities later found a trail, and K-9 teams tracked the person to the area of the Ingalls Creek Trailhead, south of Leavenworth, before the trail went cold. 'We still believe public awareness and help is our best tool — whether it comes from a cabin owner who finds something out of place, a hiker in the Enchantments who discovers evidence our searches missed, or anyone else,' the sheriff's office said. Decker was an infantryman in the Army from March 2013 to July 2021 and deployed to Afghanistan for four months in 2014. He has training in navigation, survival and other skills, authorities have said, and he once spent more than two months living in the backwoods off the grid. Last September, Decker's ex-wife, Whitney Decker, wrote in a petition to modify their parenting plan that his mental health issues had worsened and that he had become increasingly unstable. He was often living out of his truck, and she sought to restrict him from having overnight visits with their daughters until he found housing. An autopsy determined the girls' cause of death to be suffocation, the sheriff's office said. They had been bound with zip ties and had plastic bags placed over their heads.

Schoolgirl 'raped' at underpass as she walked at night: Police launch manhunt for attacker

A schoolgirl has reportedly been raped at an underpass after walking in the area at night. The Metropolitan Police has launched a manhunt for the attacker after their officers assisted the victim, 15, at the scene in east London on Sunday night. They were called to St Edmund's Way, Romford after reports of a rape and arrived there at 11.36pm. The teenager is currently being treated by specialist officers and a crime scene remains in place. A Met Police spokesperson said: 'We understand the concern this has caused in the community and people can expect to see an increased police presence in the area. 'No arrests have been made at this early stage. An investigation has been launched and anyone who has information that may assist police is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 8238/22June.' Councillor David Taylor of Havering Council, meanwhile, said on Facebook: 'I am devastated by the news, which will leave many women feeling afraid to walk alone in our town and I pray for justice for the woman assaulted.' No arrests have been made and police enquiries continue.
