BANDUNG: A natural stone quarry in Indonesia's West Java province collapsed on several people who were working in it on Friday, killing at least eight people and leaving eight workers missing, officials said.
More than two dozen people were trapped in the rubble when the mine in Cirebon district collapsed, local police chief Sumarni said, and rescuers were able to pull a dozen injured people from the debris during a gruelling search effort. Nine of them were hospitalized with serious injuries.
"Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse and we have been questioning the owner and workers of the quarry," said Sumarni, who like many Indonesians uses a single name.
She said police, emergency personnel, soldiers and volunteers were trying to locate any remaining workers, supported by five excavators, but were hampered by unstable soil that risked further slides.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said in a video statement on Instagram that he had visited and identified the vulnerability of collapse at the mine, located at Gunung Kuda mining site in Cipanas village before he was elected.
"I saw that C-grade mining was very dangerous, it did not meet the safety standard elements for its workers," Mulyadi said, adding that at that time, "I didn't have any capacity to stop it."
On Friday, Mulyadi said that he had taken firm action to close the mine and four other similar mines in West Java that are considered to be endangering the environment and lives.
A video showed rescuers struggling to bring out a body bag from a devastated area.
Illegal or informal mining operations are commonplace in Indonesia, providing a tenuous livelihood to those who labour in conditions with a high risk of injury or death.
Landslides, flooding and collapses of tunnels are just some of the hazards in such mining. Much of the processing of sand, rocks or gold ore involves the use of highly toxic mercury and cyanide by workers using little or no protection.
Last year, a landslide triggered by torrential rains struck an unauthorized gold mining operation on Indonesia's Sumatra island, killing at least 15 people.

The agents communicated with them on WhatsApp and messages and transferred money into their bank accounts. These four had to make promotional videos for the gambling platforms, post them on Instagram and share the Instagram links with the agents. They were required to keep the videos on their Instagram accounts for a week, delete them and then post new ones. All these games were based on luck with no skill involved in playing them. Police found several videos promoting online gambling platforms on the mobiles of the accused. The accused could not produce any contracts with the owners of these platforms, which had names such as 'Rajagames', 'RummyMarz' and '12 Days'.

Instagram influencer Sharmishta Panoli sent to 14 days judicial custody after arrest over ‘derogatory' post
Social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli, arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, was on Saturday remanded in judicial custody for 14 days by a court in Kolkata, reported ANI. According to the details, Panoli was arrested from Haryana's Gurugram on Friday night by Kolkata Police. She is a law student in Pune, Maharashtra. After being arrested, Panoli was produced before Alipore Court in Kolkata on Saturday, which remanded her in judicial custody for 14 days. Kolkata Police claimed they made several attempts to serve legal notices to Panoli and her family, but the attempts were unsuccessful because Panoli and her family absconded. Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued by the court, based on which she was arrested from Gurugram on Friday. "The case relates to an Instagram video by a lady named Sharmishta Panoli that hurt the religious sentiments of a particular community. FIR was lodged in Garden Reach Police Station. Attempts to serve notice as per law couldn't be successful since the accused, with her family absconded. Subsequently, warrant of arrest was issued by the court of law, based on which she was arrested from Gurgaon yesterday," ANI quoted Kolkata Police as saying. It is to be noted that Panoli had deleted the video and issued an apology on 15 May. Md Samimuddin, influencer Sharmishta Panoli's advocate, stated that they have moved her bail application before the court. "We moved our bail application before the court, citing that the articles that have been allegedly stated by the prosecution to have been used, the mobile phone and the laptop, have already been seized. Subsequently, the court heard our prayer. The police custody prayer was sought by the prosecution, which was turned down and rejected. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody till 13th of June, 2025..." Sharmishta's advocate said. Kolkata Police trashed the "factually incorrect" and "misleading" certain social media narratives on X, which suggested Panoli's arrest is 'illegal. "In reference to Garden Reach Police Station Case No. 136 dated 15.05.2025, certain social media narratives suggesting an unlawful arrest of a law student are factually incorrect and misleading," Kolkata Police said. It further stated, 'All legal procedures were duly adhered to. All attempts were made to serve notice, but she was found absconding on every occasion. Consequently, a warrant of arrest was issued by the competent court, following which she was apprehended lawfully from Gurgaon. She was thereafter produced before the appropriate magistrate and granted transit remand as per due process of law.' Meanwhile, the authorities urged the people to refrain from sharing unverified or speculative content. "We urge all concerned to refrain from spreading unverified or speculative content and to rely on authentic sources for information," the Kolkata Police further said in the post.

She was brought to Kolkata on transit remand and produced before a court, which sent her to judicial custody till June 13. Several users on social media came out in defence of Panoli and called her arrest unlawful. However, Kolkata Police issued a statement, saying certain narratives suggesting an unlawful arrest were 'factually incorrect and misleading". 'All legal procedures were duly adhered to. All attempts were made to serve notice, but she was found absconding on every occasion. Consequently, a warrant of arrest was issued by the competent court, following which she was apprehended lawfully from Gurgaon. BJP Slams 'Appeasement Politics' Meanwhile, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised the Trinamool Congress for Panoli's arrest, accusing the party of appealing to a 'certain community" for their vote banks. Speaking to reporters, Adhikari said, 'FIR was filed against Mahua Moitra also. She made derogatory comments about Goddess Kali. Was any action taken? What did their (TMC) MP, Saayoni Ghosh, post regarding Mahadev? Was any action taken? There have been so many FIRs against Firhad Hakim, but there has been no action." 'The action is only taken against Sanatanis. Everyone here has a licence to abuse Sanatana… This is appeasement politics. A certain community is their vote bank and this is for appeasement," he added. Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan said Panoli had owned up to her mistake and apologised. He lambasted the TMC for 'deep, searing pain" when the party MPs mock Sanatana Dharma. 'Where is the outrage when our faith is called 'Gandha Dharm'? Where is their apology? Where is their swift arrest?" he said. 'Blasphemy must be condemned, always! Secularism isn't a shield for some and a sword for others. It must be a two-way street.
