Wife Goes to Opera Without Husband After Couple Went Together for 70 Years. The Reason Has People Tearing Up (Exclusive)
Sam Sporn and his wife, Ellen, have been married for 71 years
The two attended the opera together for decades until Sam suffered several eye strokes in 2020
Sam's sweet way of staying connected to his wife through music went viralSam Sporn attended operas with his wife, Ellen, for over 70 years, stemming back to when they first started dating.
Unfortunately, during the pandemic, Sam suffered several eye strokes and was left unable to read subtitles or navigate crowded spaces. Due to the irreversible damage to his eyesight, the 94-year-old no longer attends performances in person.
This, however, has not stopped Sam from listening to the opera on WQXR while his 91-year-old wife heads to the theater. Although they no longer see the shows together, Sam is always eager to discuss his thoughts with Ellen when she returns home. The couple has managed to keep the music an integral part of their marriage despite the challenges that have come with age.
'Ellen had grown up loving music and playing the piano,' Sam tells PEOPLE exclusively. 'We were [opera] members way, way back, when we first moved back into Park Slope… We used to go very often and took great joy in it.'
He and his wife had box seats at the Metropolitan Opera, as well as the Brooklyn Academy of Music, largely thanks to Ellen. Growing up, she used to attend shows with her family and later introduced it to Sam.
'I reacted to it in a very positive way because she loved it and I love her,' he says. 'I wanted very much to listen to the opera and understand the opera.'
After each show, Ellen would often ask Sam what he thought and the two would end up discussing all the details – what they loved and what they disliked.
Despite his busy schedule as a successful class action attorney, Sam loved to talk about the opera with his wife because he knew how much it meant to her.
Ellen is a third-generation American from Brooklyn, N.Y., with grandparents who immigrated from Romania in the late 1800s. Her father, a lawyer and part-time post office worker, and her mother, a bookkeeper, both supported New York's cultural scene, exposing Ellen to opera, theater, and classical music from a young age.
Even after Ellen's parents had passed, Sam says they 'continued going to the opera and keeping alive the music.'
Given the deterioration of his eyesight, Sam has not been able to attend performances in person, however, he still gets excited every time Ellen gets back from a show.
'I feel terribly enthused because, not only did she see it, but she heard it and she enjoyed the pageantry and the music and the ambience, all of these things,' he explains. 'And that she still is able to at ell… I love that.'

The music-adoring couple, who fell in love after being set up by mutual friends decades ago, ended up having three children.
'I love her, I totally love her,' Sam says of his wife, who earned her PhD and taught at York College as an ESL professor. 'She is definitely my soulmate, and, you know, we look after each other, and it's so important that we're in each other's corners.'
Sam's granddaughter, Samy Cordero, has always been inspired by her grandparents' relationship and is determined to implement their values into her own life.
'My grandparents have always been partners. They take care of each other and they have each other's backs constantly,' Cordero reveals. 'This is the kind of relationship I will always aspire to have. And the kind of love I try to show my partner every day.'
When asked what love means to him, Sam says it "means total devotion.' His commitment to preserving their tradition and nurturing his wife's love for opera illustrates the couple's unbreakable bond after 71 years of marriage.

Dakota Johnson Trades Femme Fatale Dresses for Summer Whites
Throughout her Materialists press tour, Dakota Johnson has reminded us that dressing sexy exists on a spectrum. The Celine Song film, which premieres June 13, follows Johnson as Lucy, a professional matchmaker who finds herself caught in a love triangle (AKA, the Celine Song special). For her various press obligations, Johnson, styled by Kate Young, has channeled the Girl Next Door in cool Khaite jeans and suede jackets—albeit with sheer shapewear—to the sirenesque in her backless, asymmetrical dress. As she inched closer to the premiere, Johnson offered a modern take on the revenge dress. For her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, she rocked a sheer black Gucci dress with a criss-crossing neckline over a brown strapless bodysuit. And at the premiere, she chose a slinky black gown that wrapped around her neck and revealed a tasteful amount of sideboob. AeonToday, the actor traded her femme fatale dressing for summer whites. She wore a simple white midi-length tank dress, which she styled with black cat-eye sunglasses, a black shoulder bag, and white pointy-toe pumps. While much more pared-down than her sheer numbers, Dakota Johnson reminds us that in her body-conscious white dress and sultry cat-eye glasses, sexy comes in many forms.

Director Reveals If Keanu Reeves Will Be In ‘John Wick' Spinoff ‘Caine'
"From the World of John Wick: Ballerina" partial character poster featuring Keanu Reeves. With Keanu Reeves appearance in the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, what are the chances of him turning up in the franchise spinoff Caine? The director of the franchise has an answer. Reeves, of course, seemingly perished at the end of 2023's John Wick: Chapter 4, creating a creative dilemma for Stahelski when it came to the announcement at CinemaCon in April that the star would be reprising his role in John Wick 5. In the interim, Reeves was brought back in a supporting capacity in From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, starring Ana Armas as ballerina-turned-assassin Eve Maccaro, which opened in theaters over the weekend. Since the film is set during the events of 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum, it allowed Wick to return in a way that made sense to the narrative. Produced by Stahelski and directed by Len Wiseman, Ballerina is the first of at least two more From the World of John Wick features in the works. John Wick franchise studio Lionsgate announced at CinemaCon that in addition to John Wick 5, it is producing an animated John Wick prequel and the unofficially titled Caine, named after Donnie Yen's blind assassin character in John Wick: Chapter 4. Unlike Ballerina, however, the upcoming Caine movie won't feature Reeves, Stahelski recently told The Hollywood Reporter. 'The [Donnie] Yen spinoff doesn't have the John Wick character,' Stahelski said. 'It's got [Donnie] Yen and it's an ode to kung fu movies. If John Wick 1 was about Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin, this is about Chow Yun-fat, John Woo and Wong Kar-wai. So, I think that one is a little easier to get it across to audiences because it's in a sub-genre of what we love.' LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 03: (L-R) Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski attend the "John Wick" ... More 10th Anniversary Fathom Screening Q&A at AMC Century City 15 on November 03, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo byfor Lionsgate) Now that Chad Stahelski is telling spinoff tales from the world of John Wick, The Hollywood Reporter asked the director-producer if he ever worried about John Wick movies working without the Wick character. 'Keanu and I actually just talked about this,' Stahelski told THR. 'Look, it's always tricky. I think the world can be supported as long as you don't go crazy and carpet bomb. What we're doing now are stories we really want to tell that feel organic. You've seen Alice in Wonderland. Now what about the Rabbit? What about the Cheshire Cat? 'Also, sometimes in your own franchise, you get so far up your own a-- with the mythology that by the 10th movie you don't know what's going on,' the filmmaker added. 'I don't ever want to get that way with Wick. I want each one to be able to stand alone.' From the World of John Wick: Ballerina earned a projected $25 million from 3,409 North American theaters, finishing at No. 2 at the domestic box office behind Disney's live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, which made an estimated $32.5 million from 4,185 venues. Release dates are yet to be announced for Caine, the John Wick animated prequel and John Wick 5.
