Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi among top performers in school education during 2023-24: MoE report

Time of India6 hours ago

Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat and Odisha are among top performers in the 2023-24 Performing Grade Index that assesses school education at the district level, according to a report of the
Ministry of Education
.
Other
top performing states
and Union territories include Kerala, Daman and Diu, Haryana, Goa, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, the report said.
Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) measures the
performance of states and UTs
in school education. Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) has so far released PGI report for states and UTs for the years 2017-18 to 2021-22.

"The PGI has been conceptualized as a tool to catalyse transformational change in the field of school education with an objective of assessment of the relative performance of all the districts in a uniform scale," a senior ministry official said.
The PGI-D structure comprises total weightage of 600 points across 74 indicators, which are grouped under six categories -- Outcomes, Effective Classroom Transaction, Infrastructure Facilities and Student Entitlements,
School Safety and Child Protection
, Digital Learning and Governance Process.
These categories are further divided into 11 domains -- Learning Outcomes and Quality, Access Outcomes, Teacher Availability and Professional Development Outcomes, Learning Management, Learning Enrichment Activities, Infrastructure Facilities, Student Entitlements, School Safety and Child Protection, Digital Learning, Funds Convergence and Utilisation, Attendance Monitoring Systems and School Leadership Development.
Following the same approach of state PGI, districts are graded.
In PGI-D, the nomenclature for PGI scores is classified into various grades. Highest achievable grade in PGI-D is 'Utkarsh', which is for districts scoring more than 90 per cent of the total points in that category or overall.
The category and overall scores are then reduced by an equal width of 10 per cent of total points in that category or overall points for arriving to the next grade.

Shaken after plane crash on son's hostel, PI finds him safe at home

Ahmedabad: Meghaninagar police inspector D B Basiya was among the first responders to the devastating AI 171 plane crash. What awaited him at the crash site wasn't just a scene of destruction, it was deeply personal. As the debris of the downed aircraft smouldered, Basiya stood frozen. The tail of the plane had come crashing down on the mess hall of the medical college hostel — the very place where his son Rajat, a second-year MBBS student, usually had his meals. Unaware that his son had stayed home that day, the father in uniform feared the worst. Just a day before the crash, Rajat had returned home briefly to get his clothes washed and refill snacks — a routine visit. He had told his parents he would return to the hostel on June 12. "When I left for duty o June 12, Rajat told me he would leave soon for the hostel," said Basiya, recalling that morning. "When I reached the site and saw the mess destroyed, I couldn't speak." Even as a father's heart trembled, the officer in him acted. He coordinated with the fire brigade, supported volunteers, and remained outwardly composed — all the while thinking of son's safety. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... "He decided to spend more time with us since his exams were a few days away," Basiya said. Later, a video call confirmed what his heart had desperately hoped — Rajat was home, safe, sitting with his mother. While Rajat had escaped the tragedy, his friends and fellow students had not been as fortunate. "Some of the victims were the same age as my son," said Basiya. That night, Basiya continued his duty — at the Civil Hospital, surrounded by the aftermath of a crash that nearly took his own child. Some of his son's friends, shaken, stayed at their home — the only comfort they had in a night that changed many lives forever.

1 2 3 Kolkata: The centralised admission portal for undergraduate admissions received 71,949 applications from 28,443 students by 6 pm on Wednesday. However, some parents and students complained about not being able to access the portal and other technical glitches, such as difficulties in registering themselves and problem in generating the one-time password (OTP) to create their student profiles. Education minister Bratya Basu posted on his X handle, "As on 6 pm today, 28,443 students have registered on the centralised online portal of the Higher Education Department. They have submitted a total of 71,949 applications. Notably, among the registered students, 251 are from other states." Under the admission portal, an applicant can apply for a maximum of 25 programmes/courses in one or multiple higher educational institutions across the state. The centralised admission portal started functioning from 10 am on Wednesday. A higher education department official said, "The portal functioned smoothly, and the response was good — 3,508 applicants registered by 11 am, an hour after the opening of the portal. The portal also logged over 3 lakh unique visitors on the first day, which increased from last year. The department received some calls from applicants, and we addressed their issues, but the issues were not severe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hausbesitzer jubeln! Rishabh Banerjee faced difficulty accessing the portal since 10 am and was finally able to register himself around 3 pm. "I was trying since 10.30 am. It was buffering. After the site opened, I read the instructions and went to the registration page. Navigating from one page to another was taking a lot of time. After filling in all the details, when I was going to submit, it started buffering, and an error message with 'site not live' appeared on the screen. I tried multiple times and was able to register around 3 pm," said Rishabh. Another student, Ritwik Saha, said, "I faced problem in getting the OTP on email. While I got an OTP on the phone, I had issues getting OTP on email. Later, the OTP that was supposed to be sent to email was sent to my phone number. After that, I was able to register and fill up forms and choose courses and colleges. It was smooth." City colleges are satisfied after the proceedings on first day. Asutosh College principal Manas Kabi said, "Till 4.30 pm, we received 1,397 applications, which is quite good." Lady Brabourne College principal Siuli Sarkar said, "The portal opened at 10 am. Principal of New Alipore College Jaydeep Sarangi said they received 275 applications till 5 pm.

Pune ZP school makes it to global top-10 list

Pune: A zilla parishad school — at Jalindernagar in Khed taluka of Pune district — has earned global recognition by getting shortlisted in the top-10 schools worldwide for the prestigious "World's Best School Prize" competition. The school was recognized by T4 Education, an international organization that highlights innovative and impactful schools globally. Competing in the "Community Collaboration" category, the school is now preparing for the final stage. Headmaster Dattaray Ware on Wednesday said the winner will be decided through public voting, with a top prize of Rs1 crore. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as the school, once facing closure owing to low enrolment, transformed itself through robust community participation and collective efforts. It stands as the sole Indian school, and notably a govt-run Marathi medium institution, to be selected among thousands of schools internationally. Speaking at a press conference, Ware expressed pride and gratitude. "This achievement was never about winning a prize. Our aim was to prove that govt schools can provide world-class education when the community works together," he said.
