PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants Malaysia to come home with at least one gold medal from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) headquarters in Bukit Jalil, Anwar said he hopes the development of the new facility will spur the country to get its first Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles.
Anwar said the government has been supporting sports in the country through efforts from Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, as well as OCM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria.
"I think the government, through the Youth and Sports Ministry, has been very proactive and supportive. You have a good minister who has been harassing me for more money and more funds
"With Hannah and Norza, everyone is now waiting and we expect one gold medal at least, otherwise they'll be in trouble," said Anwar in jest at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
Anwar added that the new headquarters comes as a need to provide the 58 National Sports Associations (NSA) a place to gather and share knowledge to further enhance sports performance.
Expected to cost RM103mil in total, the new Olympic House will be constructed in Bukit Jalil within the Kuala Lumpur Sports City, with the new building located next to the National Hockey Stadium.
Norza had previously said that the main building is targeted to be done before the 2027 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, but Anwar hopes the project can be completed ahead of its intended schedule.
Meanwhile, Anwar also stressed the importance of sportsmanship, stressing that there is no room for hooliganism in sports at any level, particularly in football.
"As I always tell my grandchildren in any sports they are involved in, especially when they get upset, that it's not the spirit.
"You must try and excel to win, but must accept the fact that the best athlete will win and that's the spirit of sportsmanship.
"That is why we take any issue of hooliganism or violence in sports seriously, particularly in football in this country. Everyone supports their team or their state, but that does not allow them to create chaos," he said.
The new Olympic House is inspired by the one in Lausanne, Switzerland, and will replace OCM's current base at Jalan Hang Jebat.

Azizul back on his own special bike as he eyes spot for world meet

PETALING JAYA: After a long lull, track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang is back on the saddle of his specially fitted WX-R Vorteq bicycle as he eyes a spot in the team for the World Championships in Chile, Santiago, from Oct 22-26. The 2020 Olympic silver medallist revealed on his social media account that he was back at the Joe Caviola Velodrome in Melbourne, Australia, to start training on the bicycle, which was specially engineered to his physique and racing needs. "I am back at this velodrome after about one year has passed. "How happy I am to step into the Joe Caviola Velodrome. This was the first place I trained when I first came to Melbourne in 2007. I came at that time with the intention to raise the country's name," said the two-time Olympic medal winner in keirin. "Nothing has changed and my determination stays the same.'' After leaving fans in the dark since his heartbreaking exit from the Paris Olympics last year, the former world champion cleared the air in May regarding his future by announcing that he will continue racing. Azizul, who had previously hinted at retiring, will continue as a professional rider while receiving backing from the government in the form of a RM200,000 grant from the Youth and Sports Ministry through the National Sports Council (NSC). The grant is to help him with training and competition expenses for the 2025-2026 period. Azizul, who will now compete under Team Azizul, said the NSC also gave the nod for him to continue using his WX-R Vorteq bicycle. "This bike was made for me – no one else can really use it. "I am at the early phase of preparation. I was at the National Velodrome in Nilai to train with the guys back home before this but this is the first time I am back on the WX-R Vorteq bike. "I want to maximise my time here and see where I stand from the data gained. "Hopefully, I will improve further in the coming weeks," said the 37-year-old, who was recently named as the brand ambassador for Volkswagen Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines.

File motion against PM if you must, but stop making excuses, PH Youth tells Opposition

PETALING JAYA: Angkatan Muda Harapan (AMH) has challenged the Opposition to immediately table a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister in the Dewan Rakyat. Pakatan Harapan's Youth wing said the Opposition should stop making excuses and putting on an act. "If they do not dare to table the motion, or fail to pass it, they should accept the outcome. "They should then play their role in providing checks and balances constructively and responsibly," it said in a statement on Friday (Aug 8). The movement also expressed full support for the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) presented by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last week. "It is a national roadmap that emphasises value-based economic development, institutional reforms, and fair distribution for all Malaysians. "AMH urges all MPs to debate the 13MP in a mature, professional and fact-based manner, and to put forward constructive criticism and suggestions. "Comparing the plan solely based on its thickness without examining its contents is nothing more than cheap politics that does not benefit the country," it said. AMH also urged Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to issue an open apology to the entire disabled (OKU) community over his recent remarks, which it considered insensitive and shameful. "AMH strongly condemns his statement insulting the OKU community in his response to critics. "His remarks send the message that anyone who disagrees with his views deserves to be issued an OKU card. "Using the OKU community as material for political jokes is a despicable and highly irresponsible form of discrimination," it said. AMH added that it would travel nationwide to explain the government's reform agenda to the public through a series of tours, forums and dialogues, stressing the need for the government to stay connected to the people. It also pledged to push for the abolition of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU) through its AUKU Abolition Committee led by AMH chief Woo Kah Leong, and expressed solidarity with PKR youth deputy chief Nabil Halimi, who was sued for RM1mil by PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari. "AMH is also committed to empowering young people, but hopes that the mechanism for implementing the age limit of 30 for youth will be improved in line with the needs of youth associations. "AMH is concerned about the continuity of youth leadership and hopes that the policy will take into account socio-economic realities, the process of leadership capacity transition, and the inclusive involvement of all stakeholders, especially young people," it said.
