Recruits pose with rebel group's flag: Assam Rifles says verifying authenticity of viral photo
GUWAHATI: A photograph doing rounds on social media, showing a group of young men in Assam Rifles uniform posing with the flag of a militant outfit has sparked a controversy in the state.
Twenty-one men are seen in the viral photograph holding a couple of flags, allegedly that of militant group Zomi Revolutionary Army.
As the photo went viral, Assam Rifles released a statement stating the force is verifying the authenticity of the picture.
"The authenticity of the photograph is being verified. Based on confirmation, suitable disciplinary action will be initiated against all the defaulters," the Assam Rifles posted on X.
'Assam Rifles remains committed to maintaining ethos of the force,' the post further read.
Earlier in the day, an X user posted the photograph, tagging the Assam Rifles, the Prime Minister's Office, Union Home Minister Amit Shah among others.

Assam Rifles Passing Out Parade, young recruits, symbols of discipline and national service were seen alongside a flag of the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), an armed rebel group based in Myanmar. Why was this flag allowed at a government-run military ceremony under the @HMOIndia?' the user wrote.
'This isn't just symbolic confusion. It undermines national integrity and sends a troubling message. The people of India expect clarity, loyalty, and accountability from those who wear the uniform,' the post further read.

Union Government notifies Population and Caste Census, to begin on March 1 2027
New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): The Central government on Monday notified the Population census, the process of which will be Census of population to be taken during 2027: Centre undertaken in 2027. As per a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027, as per a circular released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.' The reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Furthermore, the reference date for the Union Territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026. On June 15, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the preparations for the upcoming Census during a meeting in New Delhi along with Union Home Secretary, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG& CCI) and other senior officials. Sharing the details in a post on X, Amit Shah said, 'Reviewed the preparations for the 16th Census with senior officials. Tomorrow, the gazette notification of the census will be issued. The census will include caste enumeration for the first time. As many as 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh census functionaries will conduct the operation with cutting-edge mobile digital gadgets. 'The Census will be conducted in two phases. In phase 1, House Listing Operation (HLO), the housing conditions, assets and amenities of each household will be collected. Subsequently, in the second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of every person in each household will be collected. In the Census, Caste enumeration will also be done. For Census activities, about 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh Census functionaries would be deployed. This is the 16th Census since its beginning and the 8th since independence. The ensuing Census will be conducted through digital means using mobile applications. Provision of Self-enumeration would also be made available to the people. Very stringent data security measures would be kept in place to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage. (ANI)

Country emerging as global leader in disaster response: HM Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that the disaster response forces have worked hard over the past 10 years to take the country on the verge of becoming a global leader in crisis management. Addressing the Relief Commissioners and Disaster Response Forces Conference, HM Shah said, 'In the last 10 years, we have achieved a lot in four areas of capacity, speed, efficiency and accuracy.' 'Speed is of essence in any operation related to disaster management. Timely response to a disaster and saving lives is the most important objective for which we have made big strides through training of workforce and introduction of technology and advance warning system for the community,' he said. "Though the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) works under my ministry, I can confidently say that it has built a strong image, earned recognition, and gained respect across the country,' said HM Shah. The NDRF has also worked hard to train jawans of the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), he said. He praised National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), NDRF and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) for bringing India closer to becoming a global leader in disaster management. HM Shah said till a decade ago disaster management was limited to offering relief after a calamity, however, over the decade India's disaster management is moving forward with a 'Zero Casualty Approach' which has even surprised the global community. The Union Minister stressed on research to improve advance warning systems for disaster response and mitigation. 'We have succeeded in redefining our disaster response from reactive to pro-active over the decade,' said HM Shah, adding that 'Bhagidhari' has been the foundation of improving the response system. 'Starting from the Central government to State governments and to local bodies, a unified approach has been adopted for disaster response. Now, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi we are even involving the community in the effort,' he said. HM Shah said in the coming decade each of the youth in the country will be equipped with the capability to join disaster response. Highlighting the multi-dimensional approach of the government, HM Shah said the budgetary allocation for disaster response forces has also been increased three-fold over the past decade. 'In the case of NDRF, the allocation was Rs 28,000 crore between 2004 and 2014 but during 2014 and 2024 it was raised to Rs 84,000 crore,' he said. For the SDRF, the budget between 2004 and 2014 was Rs 38,000 crore but between 2014 and 2024 it was increased to Rs 1.44 lakh crore, he said. Coalition for CDRI, an international organisation launched by PM Modi, is a global partnership of 49 members dedicated to climate and disaster-resilient infrastructure solutions. It is a partnership of national governments, UN agencies and programmes, multilateral development banks and financing mechanisms, the private sector, and academia. CDRI advances the cause of climate and disaster resilient infrastructure (DRI).

Government to conduct annual inter-state disaster management drills: Amit Shah
Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday announced that the central government will conduct inter-state disaster management mock drills annually. The announcement was made at the relief commissioners and Disaster Response Forces Conference held in the national Capital. Addressing officials and personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in New Delhi, Shah emphasised the government's commitment to integrating the Start-Up India initiative with the advancement of disaster relief technologies. 'The current decade will be considered as the transformative decade for India in disaster response. We made strides in the last decade in terms of capacity, pace, efficiency and accuracy in disaster management,' the Union home minister said, adding that the government has moved away from the previously adopted 'relief-oriented' approach. We cannot succeed in this without the assistance of the state. Therefore, the states should brainstorm on this.' He highlighted the progress made in disaster preparedness, asserting that the government had moved from minimum casualties at the start of the decade to achieving zero-casualty outcomes. Referring to Cyclone Biparjoy in 2023, which struck off the coast of Gujarat, Shah said it recorded no fatalities. 'When I say zero casualties, that means there were no deaths of even an animal in the cyclone,' he added. He urged state and Union Territory relief commissioners to formulate district-level disaster management strategies within 90 days. 'It will be impossible to fight against the disaster until there is a district-level disaster management strategy in place. Commissioners should devise a strategy to protect from lightning and share it with the Centre within 90 days,' Shah said, urging officials to implement the Centre's disaster response guidelines, including the incident response system. Commenting on preparedness for extreme heat events, he stressed the importance of real-time response frameworks. 'Whenever the heat wave begins, we must be prepared before hand,' he added. Shah further stated that disaster response efforts under the current government had become 'more proactive than reactive.' 'We made attempts for financial empowerment and an increase in the government budget for disaster and relief. We also ensured design-oriented institutional empowerment, as well as structural empowerment. Adding all this, we have accepted a multidimensional approach as a policy factor,' he said.
