CRRUA: Improvements help crews battle fire in Anapra; Addresses low water pressure in the area

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA) said the utility has been addressing community concerns as they were notified of low water pressure in the Anapra area, particularly highlighted during a recent fire incident, the utility said in a news release.

CRRUA provides water and wastewater services to Sunland Park and Santa Teresa.
The utility, in partnership with the City of Sunland Park, recently installed critical fire suppression infrastructure to the Anapra area that had been lacking, according to the news release.
'As part of a regional improvement initiative under the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, CRRUA contributed $345,000 in match funding to install new fire hydrants, water lines, and water meters throughout the Anapra subdivision; an area that previously lacked this essential infrastructure,' CRRUA Executive Director Juan Crosby said.
Crosby said CRRUA is aware of low water pressure in the Anapra area, as a structure fire happened there earlier on Thursday. However, he said that thanks to these recent improvements, first responders had access to nearby hydrants.
'Without these upgrades, the nearest hydrant would have been on McNutt Road, potentially delaying response efforts and increasing fire damage,' Crosby said.
CRRUA said the Anapra Subdivision is in one of the oldest areas of the utility's water system.
'Water mains in the Anapra Subdivision were installed more than 40 years ago following codes and standards that were in effect at the time of construction. Many of the existing water mains are not large enough to meet current fire flow and pressure requirements,' read the news release.
Crosby said while progress has been made, CRRUA recognizes the continued need for infrastructure enhancements, including the replacement of the existing 6-inch and 4-inch water main along McNutt Road with an 8-inch or 10-inch line to further support improved fire suppression and water pressure in Anapra. However, additional funding is required to undertake this next phase of improvement, according to the news release.
'CRRUA remains fully committed to securing funds and making the long-term investments needed to strengthen the entire utility system,' Crosby said.
'CRRUA is dedicated to ensuring safe, sustainable, and efficient utility services while proactively investing in infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing community,' Crosby added.

Millions approved to fund hurricane resilience projects across Orange County

More than $85 million in federal funds will soon be used to improve Orange County communities that were hit hard by Hurricane Ian. Orange County Commissioners approved funding on Tuesday to help communities prepare for and withstand future storms. It will support 14 local projects, including four in the City of Orlando, two in the City of Ocoee and one in Winter Garden, Winter Park and the Town of Eatonville. Orange County will also use a portion of the funding to improve stormwater infrastructure in Orlo Vista, Long Lake, Verona Park and the Bonnie Brook communities. Longtime Bonnie Brook resident Jim Tadlock told Channel 9 he's still rebuying furniture after losing everything during Hurricane Ian nearly three years ago. 'I bought a living room, dining room and all new appliances,' said Tadlock, 'Everybody on this street lost everything.' But Tadlock is hopeful that a new project set to upgrade existing pumps and construct a new stormwater pump station at the west end of Applecross Street could make a big difference. Commissioners approved $1.5 million for the project as part of the Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program. Tadlock, along with Bonnie Brook resident Denise George and Bonnie Brook Homeowners Association President Deborah Marley, had advocated for improvement for years. 'We just started pushing and nagging, and I guess it worked,' said Marley. This funding is part of a $219.7 million allocation received by Orange County through HUD. In addition to awards for public infrastructure, $35 million remains, as part of the CDBG-DR program, available for homeowners with unresolved Hurricane Ian damage through the Orange County Recovers program. Applications are open through the summer. Marley continues, 'You still have people trying to get back into their houses. We've got one guy that just moved back in.' Lake Roberts Boat Launch to close temporarily ahead of fishing derby

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Lake Roberts Boat Launch and adjacent picnic area will be temporarily closed this week while crews from the Gila National Forest cut hazardous trees near the parking area and trim back excess vegetation. The boat launch and picnic area will be closed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 5. The work is being done in preparation for Saturday's annual Aldo Leopold Kids' Fishing Derby. 'This fun, annual fishing derby is a favorite of Gila National Forest staff and families across Grant County,' Wilderness District Ranger Brian Stultz said. 'We look forward to seeing everyone this weekend' The annual fishing derby begins at 7 a.m. and wraps up at noon on Saturday. Event activities will be set up in the peninsula area east of the boat launch, rendering it unavailable for parking. Parking at the boat launch will be limited and preferably left available for people with disabilities or trailer turnaround, officials with the Gila National Forest said. During the fishing derby, visitors are also asked to refrain from parking along the narrow roadway to the boat launch, as to keep clear access available for emergency vehicles. Ample parking for participants is available in the day use picnic area. A path will be cleared to ensure ease of pedestrian access between the picnic area and lake shoreline.
