Maharashtra Government To Probe 26 Lakh 'Suspect' Beneficiaries Of Ladki Bahin Yojana

Mumbai:
The Maharashtra government has ordered a large-scale verification drive targeting over 26 lakh beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana amid suspicions of widespread ineligibility and misuse, state Women and Child Development department officials said on Saturday.
District administrations have been directed to physically verify applications and eligibility of the listed women based on set criteria, while anganwadi workers have been tasked with conducting door-to-door checks to weed out ineligible claimants, they said.
The scheme allows only two women per household between the ages of 21 and 65 to receive benefits, but officials said cases have emerged where more than two women from the same family, or those outside the age bracket, have availed themselves of the monthly payment of Rs 1,500.
According to the department's officials, the current scrutiny focuses on two primary conditions, namely age and number of beneficiaries per household.
"Women found outside the eligible age group will be disqualified, and in households with more than two beneficiaries, only two will remain eligible. Additional checks are being conducted for bogus documents, false transfer certificates, and ownership of four-wheelers," an official said.
Launched by the then Mahayuti government last year, the Ladki Bahin Yojana is credited with helping the ruling alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, retain power comprehensively in the November 2024 assembly polls.
Earlier reports revealed that around 14,000 men had received payments, amounting to more than Rs 21 crore, under the scheme for up to 10 months. In a separate probe, more than 2,000 government employees were found to have taken undue advantage of the scheme.
"The ongoing verification will also cover Jalna district, where 70,000 beneficiaries are under scrutiny. The WCD department has prepared a list of suspected ineligible claimants, and field checks have already begun in several districts," the official said.
The department indicated the verification is also being driven by the mounting financial burden of the scheme on the state exchequer as applications were approved initially without stringent checks in the run-up to the Assembly elections.

Kerala Doctor Duped Of Rs 4.43 Crore In WhatsApp Trading Scam, Two Arrested

The Kerala police detected as many as 18 more accounts in the name of various individuals to transfer the money earned through online fraud. A doctor in Kerala was scammed of Rs 4.43 crore after falling victim to a fraudulent WhatsApp scheme. The state's cybercrime unit has arrested two men in connection with the case, according to officials quoted by IANS. The accused have been identified as Mehbubasha Farooq and Rijaz, and they were arrested in Chennai by the Kannur City Cyber Crime Police. While Farooq hails from Chennai, Rijaj is a resident of Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district and has been settled in Chennai. The two accused allegedly ran a scam via WhatsApp, luring the victim with promises of high returns from investments in a fake online trading platform. According to police, the accused added the doctor — a resident of Mattannur in Kerala's Kannur district — to a WhatsApp group in June, where they promoted an online share trading scheme and promised large profits. The victim was asked to send money to several bank accounts under the pretext of a 'wealth profit plan' linked to a fictitious company named Upstock. 'We have traced about Rs 40 lakh deposited by the accused in their accounts. Besides this, the police detected as many as 18 more accounts in the name of various individuals to transfer the money earned through online fraud. The matter is under investigation now," said the officer. He also confirmed that no links to terrorism had been uncovered during the inquiry. Though the trading app would show the profits earned, he found the platform unresponsive and could not withdraw the amount, prompting him to approach the police to file a complaint with the police on June 25. 'The victim was led to believe he was making lucrative investments, but the entire setup was a sham," the cyber police said. The incident came to light after the cybercrime team tracked down the suspects by following the trail of bank account numbers and mobile phones used in the fraud. A deeper investigation led them to Chennai, where the two accused were arrested. The officer added that they are now looking into whether a larger network is involved and if there are more victims connected to the online scam. Free bus travel in Andhra for girls, women, transgender persons from Aug 15

Amaravati, Aug 11 (PTI) All girls, women, and transgender persons holding Andhra Pradesh domicile are eligible for free bus travel under the 'Stree Shakti' (woman power) scheme, to be launched statewide on August 15, Principal Secretary (Transport, Roads & Buildings) Kantilal Dande said on Monday. 'Beneficiaries include all girls, women, and transgender persons with domicile status in Andhra Pradesh, subject to presenting valid identity proof," Dande said in a government order. The scheme will be implemented using the existing fleet of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), with additional buses to be procured based on demand, he added. Free travel will apply only to Pallevelugu, Ultra Pallevelugu, City Ordinary, Metro Express, and Express services. It will not cover non-stop services, interstate operations, contract carriages, chartered services, or package tours. Saptagiri Express, Ultra Deluxe, Super Luxury, Star Liner, and all air-conditioned services are also excluded, he said. For passenger safety, the government is considering equipping staff with body-worn cameras and installing CCTV cameras in all buses. Bus stations will see upgraded amenities such as fans, chairs, drinking water, and toilets. Dande said the procurement of electric buses and extending the scheme to them could also be considered, subject to Cabinet approval. Free bus travel for women was a poll promise of the TDP-led NDA government ahead of the 2024 elections. The scheme is estimated to cost Rs 1,942 crore annually—about Rs 162 crore a month—and aims to empower women by improving access to education, jobs, and mobility, Minister K Parthasarathy had earlier said. Airbnb 'Superhost' Fakes Photos To Accuse Guest Of Damage Worth Rs 14 Lakh

A woman in London faced false damage claims after leaving a NYC Airbnb early. After appealing with proof, Airbnb refunded her full amount and apologised Airbnb has become a highly popular online platform for booking accommodation. People not only reserve hotel rooms but often list their own homes on Airbnb as well. Recently, a rather unusual incident occurred involving a woman from England while she was in the United States of America. She had booked an Airbnb, but as she was preparing to leave, the host accused her of causing damage, leaving the woman astonished. She subsequently provided evidence that ultimately revealed the truth. The Booking And Early Departure A woman from London had booked a one-bedroom flat in Manhattan, New York, for two and a half months via Airbnb. According to a report by The Guardian, the incident took place earlier this year. The woman ended her stay after just seven weeks, citing an unsafe environment, and cut her booking short. Shortly after her departure, the host accused her of causing damage worth $16,000 (around Rs 14 lakh), claiming she had broken the coffee table, left urine stains on the mattress, and damaged the robot vacuum, sofa, microwave, television, and air conditioning unit, backing these claims with several photographs. The woman denied all allegations made by the Airbnb host. She explained that only two visitors had come to see her during her stay. Upon examining the photos of the coffee table closely, she noticed that the damage appeared different in each image. She suspected that the photos were either artificially generated or doctored. The woman believed the host was retaliating due to her early departure. As the host was classified as a 'Superhost', the situation was particularly serious. Initially, following what Airbnb described as a 'thorough investigation" of the photos, the woman was asked to pay over $7,000 (approximately Rs 6.13 lakh). The Appeal And Evidence Presented The woman appealed the decision, providing testimony from an eyewitness who was present during her checkout and could confirm that the property had been left clean and undamaged. She highlighted inconsistencies in the photos that would be impossible in original, unaltered images of the same wooden table. She commented, 'Such an obvious error should have immediately invalidated the host's claims, but Airbnb neither acknowledged nor considered my evidence." Five days after Guardian Money intervened, Airbnb accepted her appeal and credited £500 (around Rs 58,000) to her account. When she announced she would no longer book through Airbnb, the company offered her a refund of £854 (around Rs 1 lakh), which was only one-fifth of the total booking cost. She declined this offer. Resolution And Apology Ultimately, the woman was refunded the full booking amount of approximately £4,269 (around Rs 5.3 lakh), and the negative review posted by the host was removed. Airbnb apologised to the woman for the ordeal and promised to conduct an internal investigation. The host received a warning for breaching platform rules and was informed that repeated complaints could lead to their removal from Airbnb. The company issued a statement saying, 'We take claims of damage very seriously. Our expert team examines all available evidence to ensure a fair decision for both parties. There is also an option to appeal decisions."
