Bengals Contract Offer To Holdout Trey Hendrickson Revealed

Bengals Contract Offer To Holdout Trey Hendrickson Revealed

Yahoo21-05-2025

The Cincinnati Bengals are hoping to avoid a messy situation with star defender Trey Hendrickson, who enters the final year of his contract in 2025.
Reports are that the two sides are far apart and the team lowballed him with an offer already.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported what he thinks could happen between the two sides as talks continue to progress.
"Hendrickson is due to make $16 million this year," Florio wrote. "The Bengals, we've heard, have offered roughly $28 million per year. Whatever the amount (and, as importantly, the structure), he wants more. Hendrickson has real value, but he doesn't have much leverage. His options are simple and few. One, take the team's best offer on a new deal.
"Two, play for $16 million and become a free agent in 2026 (unless they tag him). Three, hold out and hope the Bengals will cave."
None of those three scenarios that Florio outlined seem to be in Hendrickson's favor.

He's already spoken out to talk about how disappointed he is in the negotiation process so far. ... suggesting that the Bengals are liars for having reneged on a promise to get this done.
'To say I'm going to sit out or I'm not going to, what I can say is I'm very disappointed with the communication that's been had," Hendrickson said. "Former players have walked in these shoes and what it foreshadows is not something I'm excited about to tell my wife and my family. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. I truthfully will put my hope in that.'
Across four seasons in Cincinnati, the well-established standout - who is threatening a prolonged holdout here - has established himself as one of the league's premier pass rushers and most prolific sack machines. He's posted back-to-back seasons of 17.5 sacks and made the Pro Bowl the past four seasons.
What's the "going rate'' here?

Well, it's not $28 million.
Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby just signed on for $35.5 million per year. Following that, Browns defensive end Myles Garrett got $40 million.
Soon, Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons will reach or exceed that number.
In 2024, Hendrickson established a new career high with 46 tackles with 33 solo and 10 for loss with 36 QB hits. ... making him, in the eyes of many, just as important to a Bengals push for a Super Bowl as Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, who just signed monster deals to help carry the Joe Burrow-led offense.

Ex-Aaron Rodgers Teammate Allen Lazard Gets Cold Feet About Joining Steelers

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After a game of cat and mouse that lasted two-and-a-half months, the Pittsburgh Steelers finally got their guy. The team announced on Thursday evening that it had signed four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal, bringing an end to one of the lengthiest and most drama-filled storylines of the NFL offseason. But now that the Steelers have addressed their biggest area of need, another one requires their attention — the glaring hole at wide receiver opened up after the team traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys last month for third- and sixth-round picks. Several names have been floated as possible Pickens replacements over the last few weeks, but one that's been thrown out more than any other is current New York Jets receiver Allen Lazard, who's spent all seven seasons of his NFL career as Rodgers' teammate. And while it's easy to connect the dots on a potential Rodgers-Lazard reunion, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio recently revealed that Lazard may actually have some reservations about continuing to be tied at the hip to the 10-time Pro Bowl QB. "Per a source with knowledge of Lazard's thinking, he sees a very real potential benefit to proving his ability to function at an acceptable level without Rodgers as his quarterback," Florio reported. "That doesn't mean Lazard would reject the opportunity to play with Rodgers again. But it's not an automatic, knee-jerk, no-brainer. Lazard, at the end of the day, may prefer to make his own path." More PhotoThere's no question, Lazard is an effective weapon when paired with Rodgers. His two best seasons—2021 (40 catches, 513 yards, eight touchdowns) and 2022 (60 catches, 788 yards, six touchdowns)—were with a healthy, pre-Achilles injury Rodgers throwing him the ball. In fact, the one season Rodgers was injured and Lazard was catching passes from someone else, he had the worst season of his career (23 receptions, 311 yards, one TD). "Lazard has a well-earned reputation of being two different players. With Rodgers, good. Without Rodgers, not," Florio continued. "... He has a much better chance of [continuing his career] if he can take advantage of his opportunity with the Jets to prove that he can thrive without Rodgers as his quarterback." If Lazard is, in fact, a no-go for the Steelers, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport believes the team will be aggressive in its pursuit of landing Rodgers another offensive weapon. "I do expect the Pittsburgh Steelers to continue to search for one more weapon," Rapoport said on Friday. "... Jonnu Smith — there was a phone call there. Kyle Pitts — there was a phone call there. The Steelers are in the market for at least one more playmaker." For more NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

The Aaron Rodgers effect? Here's the latest NFL power rankings based on Super Bowl odds

The Aaron Rodgers effect? Here's the latest NFL power rankings based on Super Bowl odds Aaron Rodgers is headed to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Meh? Horray? Look out for AFC North, the entire AFC, and the entire league? The news has certainly shifted a significant focus toward Steel City, where Rodgers will most likely become the franchise's 10th starting quarterback in the past decade. Alongside the Super Bowl-winning slinger, Rodgers will have a new target in wideout DK Metcalf and a new head coach who has yet to endure a losing season. How the addition actually reshapes the NFL hierarchy remains to be seen, though, and the oddsmakers seem to view this as nothing more than … a nice pickup. New Contract Proposed for Broncos' All-Pro Edge Rusher Nik Bonitto

New Contract Proposed for Broncos' All-Pro Edge Rusher Nik Bonitto originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Led by edge rusher Nik Bonitto, the Denver Broncos had one of the NFL's top defenses in 2024, allowing just 18.3 points per game. Advertisement Bonitto led the Broncos with 13.5 of the team's 63 sacks, on his way to a second-team All-Pro season and Pro Bowl appearance in 2024. That was a major jump in production from 1.5 sacks in his rookie season in 2022 and eight sacks in 2023. It may surprise you to hear that Bonitto was third in the NFL in sacks, just behind the highly-paid Miles Garrett (14) and Trey Hendrickson (17.5). Hendrickson is holding out for an extension right now, and according to Tom Blair of Bonitto should be too. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) tries to avoid a tackle by Denver Broncos linebacker Nik Bonitto (15) in the fourth quarter at Raymond James Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images The 25-year-old out of Oklahoma was a second-round pick in 2022. He is still on his rookie contract, which means he is making less than $1.5 million this season. Advertisement Here is how Blair breaks it down. "Dividing Bonitto's APY [$1.45 million] by his team-leading 13.5 sacks in 2024 works out to $107,407 per sack in APY. That might seem like a decent amount, until you put it next to Trey Hendrickson's APY-per-sack mark of $1.2 million," Blair wrote. Throw in the fact that Blair believes Hendrickson is currently underpaid, which means Bonitto is making almost 10 times less than he could be. It might be hard to convince the Broncos to put an extension together with such a cheap deal. However, Bonitto's contract ends after the 2025-2026 season, which means the Broncos will have to pay up anyway if they want to keep the star defender going forward.
