If you're craving a new psychological horror anime in 2025 that isn't about blood, but about dread, grief, and very wrong smiles—The Summer Hikaru Died is already doing everything right.
Episode 2 doubles down on the eerie softness that made the premiere unforgettable, but it also starts digging deeper into the characters' heartbreak and denial. In this review and recap, we break down the slow-burn emotional horror, the terrifying intimacy, and why Hikaru and Yoshiki are the duo keeping us emotionally unwell.

recap: "Suspicion"
Source: Crunchyroll
Episode 2 of The Summer Hikaru Died leans even harder into its quiet dread. We open with Yoshiki deep in denial, walking the same paths with something that looks like his best friend but definitely isn't.
The thing wearing Hikaru's face speaks gently, smiles kindly—but it's watching, mimicking, studying.Yoshiki is painfully aware now. Every glance, every pause, every too-perfect word from 'Hikaru' lands with weight.
But instead of running, he walks beside him. Maybe because he's scared. Maybe because he's lonely. Maybe because pretending is easier than accepting that the real Hikaru is gone.Throughout the episode, we see the unnerving blend of human and not: Hikaru casually mentioning that someone 'won't be bothering them anymore.'

The townspeople don't seem to notice the tension—but Yoshiki does. And so do we. It's not just possession. It's adaptation. Hikaru's replacement is learning how to pass. And he's doing it terrifyingly well. The emotional highlight? A quiet moment where Hikaru stares at Yoshiki like he's trying to understand how to love him. It's soft. It's wrong. It's heartbreaking. And that's exactly what makes this anime so terrifying—it's not screaming at you.
It's whispering in your ear. By the end, you don't feel scared. You feel… haunted. And that's The Summer Hikaru Died's real superpower.
The Summer Hikaru Died episode 2 builds horror with silence, not screams
What makes episode 2 of this psychological horror anime hit so hard is its refusal to over-explain. It assumes you're smart—and haunted. There's no gore, no jump scare. Just eerie stillness, a lingering glance too long, and one boy pretending the other hasn't been replaced by something that shouldn't exist. The fear isn't loud—it's existential.
You're not scared of what Hikaru is. You're scared of how close he still feels to the real thing.
And that intimacy? It's unbearable—in the best way.
Yoshiki is spiralling and choosing denial over survival
Source: Crunchyroll
Yoshiki knows the truth. He knows this isn't his Hikaru. And yet? He still walks beside him. He still listens to him. He still sits in quiet companionship with something he should be running from. This is grief in its most raw, most tragic form. What's worse is that 'Hikaru' is trying to understand love, friendship, and human emotion.
He's copying Hikaru's habits with eerie accuracy. And Yoshiki is letting him. That contradiction—fear mixed with longing—is what makes this show hit harder than any demon or curse ever could.
Visually and emotionally,The Summer Hikaru Died is a masterpiece in restraint
Episode 2 continues the show's commitment to subtle horror. It doesn't throw monsters in your face—it makes you the monster for still loving someone who isn't real. The animation uses fog, dim lighting, negative space, and long pauses like weapons.
Every scene lingers. Every shot dares you to breathe. And the sound design? Stunningly quiet. It lets the silence ring loud—and in horror, silence can scream louder than anything else.
This isn't just art—it's tension you can't scrub off.
Hikaru and Yoshiki: The most devastating duo in horror anime right now
Source: Crunchyroll
This isn't just horror. It's heartbreak. Hikaru and Yoshiki are locked in a twisted kind of intimacy where one is trying to hold on, and the other is trying to become something he's not.
Their bond is the story's emotional core—and the reason the fear hits so deep. Every conversation is a test. Every memory they share is a knife. Every time Hikaru smiles just right, you remember he's not supposed to be smiling at all. That emotional dissonance is what turns this from creepy to unforgettable.
Final verdict: The Summer Hikaru Died episode 2 leaves you quietly unwell
The Summer Hikaru Died episode 2 proves this show isn't about jump scares—it's about emotional ruin. It's for the overthinkers, the romantics, the ones who find horror in the softest places. And that's what makes it so different. It's scary, yes. But not because of what's on screen—because of what it makes you feel. The grief. The guilt. The loneliness. If this pacing, direction, and writing keeps up, The Summer Hikaru Died could become one of the defining psychological horror anime of the decade.
And we'll be spiralling along with Yoshiki the whole way. The next episode is out this Saturday, so be prepared.

BoS chairman opposes removal of Vedan's song

Kozhikode: It seems Calicut University is heading for a disagreement over the recommendation to remove rapper Vedan's (Hirandas Murali) song 'Bhumi Njan Vazhunnidam' from the third semester BA Malayalam syllabus. The expert committee, appointed by CU vice-chancellor P Raveendran, had suggested removing the song. However, Malayalam UG Board of Studies (BoS) chairman MS Ajith opposed the move, saying it violated academic rules. CU authorities had said they would send the expert panel recommendation to BoS, which has the authority to change the syllabus. But Ajith said it was wrong to rely on an outside expert's opinion on syllabus matters. "BoS had approved the syllabus after detailed discussions. We did not plan to remove the song," he added. Ajith said that if the syllabus must be changed, then it has to be decided by the board or higher academic bodies like the academic council. MM Basheer had submitted a report to Raveendran saying that comparing the musical aspects of Vedan's song with Michael Jackson's 'They Don't Care About Us' would be too demanding for students. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The VC had asked the panel to examine the inclusion of the song in the syllabus. The report submitted by former head of Malayalam department MM Basheer to Raveendran said the comparative study of the musical features of Vedan's and Jackson's songs should be removed and replaced with a more suitable topic. The song was part of the Introduction to Comparative Literature course, under the module Puthu Pravanathakal (new trends). BJP-affiliated member AK Anuraj had objected to including Vedan's song in the syllabus and filed a complaint with governor Rajendra Arlekar. The governor sought a report from the VC, who then instructed Basheer to examine the issue.

I never thought ill of him: Vishal Jethwa on ignoring 'Homebound' co-star Ishaan Khatter at Cannes '25

Actor Vishal Jethwa has broken his silence on the backlash he and actress Janhvi Kapoor received for reportedly ignoring Ishaan Khatter during an interview regarding the global premiere of the film 'Homebound' at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Actor Vishal Jethwa has broken his silence on the backlash he and actress Janhvi Kapoor received for reportedly ignoring Ishaan Khatter during an interview about their global premiere of the film 'Homebound' at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. Vishal Jethwa is one of the emerging stars of Indian who got his breakthrough with his negative role in RMukerji's 'Mardaani 2', released in 2019. Though this film became a domestic hit, the global fame for the actor was yet to come, as his performance was reportedly overshadowed by superstar Rani Mukerji's powerful portrayal of a cop. Neeraj Ghaywan 's 'Homebound' served as the perfect platform for the actor to showcase his work on global platforms after it was nominated in the Un Certain Regard award category at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Along with him, the movie also starred Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter in the lead roles. With fame, the 'Mardaani 2' actor also came under the radar of controversy when he was seen talking to co-star Janhvi Kapoor while sitting next to Ishaan Khatter, who was giving an interview to a journalist about the 'Homebound' nomination at Cannes 2025. It led to several media reports stating that the Vishal allegedly ignored Ishaan during the Cannes premiere. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Write Better, Work Smarter With This Desktop App Grammarly Install Now Undo The actor has now opened up about the viral video and clarified that he harbours no ill feelings towards his co-star, Ishaan Khatter. While talking to ANI, Vishal Jethwa cleared the air around the reports of a tiff between him and his 'Homebound' co-star Ishaan Khatter. When asked about the possible tension between him and Ishaan, the actor disagreed with such rumours. He went on to praise his co-star's dedication to work and cinema, saying that he "looks up to him" and is "inspired" by his commitment to the craft. "There is nothing like this. I never thought ill of him (Ishaan). We are good well-wishers of each other, and I look up to Ishaan. I learn a lot from him, and I was inspired by his work after watching it. In fact, when we completed the film, I wondered how Ishaan remained dedicated to his craft. I learnt a lot from him," said Vishal Jethwa. While addressing the rumours, the 'Mardaani 2' actor said that he doesn't believe in competition because, according to him, it is a "never-ending game." "I am not competitive in real life. It's not a good feeling to constantly ponder how I can pass others or how I can beat them. It's a never-ending game," said Vishal Jethwa. As for his future plans, the actor wants to "sustain" his current position in Bollywood and just wishes to "move forward" with good films. "I have held a very satisfactory position for many years. I am very content. I am so proud of myself. I just hope that I can sustain my current position. I want to move forward. I will move forward a lot," concluded Jethwa. Vishal Jethwa has been nominated for the Best Actor Award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, along with the film being nominated to be screened there. The Film festival is set to take place from August 14. The film will also be screened at the Toronto Film Festival 2025. 'Homebound' also received a nine-minute-long standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. Vishal Jethwa described the breakout success of 'Homebound' and receiving global fame as one of the "rare opportunities" in an actor's life. "I just hope that whatever things are coming in front of me, I should enjoy it as much as possible and experience it as much as possible. Because this is happening for the first time in my life, and such an opportunity doesn't come every time," said Vishal Jethwa. 'Homebound' revolves around two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who chase a police job that promises them the dignity they've long been denied. But as they inch closer to their dream, mounting desperation threatens the bond that holds them together, as Variety describes it. Director Neeraj Ghaywan described 'Homebound' as "a deeply personal story about friendship, dignity, and survival." "It's about people who are often unseen, and the quiet strength they carry in a world that rarely pauses for them," said the director, adding that he hopes the film "helps us look closer--with empathy--and see what we've been conditioned to ignore." Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese serves as an executive producer on the film.
