Gulliver Prep's Nicolas Pineros is the Miami-Dade 3A-1A Boys' Soccer Player of the Year

Miami Herald20-03-2025
Repeated trips to the final four require all-around efforts.
Gulliver Prep relied on a standout individual performance to make it back to the state semifinals yet again this year.
Nicolas Pineros had 10 goals and 22 assists to get Gulliver to the state semis for the third straight year.
As a result, he is the Miami Herald's Miami-Dade County Boys' Soccer Player of the Year for Classes 3A-1A.
Pineros, the Miami-Dade County Boys' Soccer Player of the Year for Classes 3A-1A, was the latest offensive engine for Florida's premier program, handing out 22 assists to rank among the state's leaders in the category. The senior was also at his best near the end of the season, with five assists in his final six games.
The Raiders fell short of winning their third consecutive state championship with a loss to Delray Beach American Heritage in the Class 3A semifinals, but still finished the year among the most accomplished teams in all of South Florida.
'It's been normal for us to go up there and win with the teams we've had lately, but you don't always get what you want and the other team just wanted it more and had a little more dog in them,' Pineros said. 'Overall, the season was great. The memories and brotherhood we created was more than we could have asked for.'
Pineros, who has yet to sign with a college, had some of his most clutch performances in the postseason including a season-saving goal with a minute left in the regional semifinals to avoid losing to SLAM Miami. The tally sent the game to overtime and eventually penalty kicks where the Raiders prevailed and advanced.
'I had to learn how to take control and take charge of the team because the last few years that role fell to (former Gulliver standout) Cosme (Salas),' Pineros said. 'At the beginning I had to learn how to do that and learn a lot of valuable skills.'

Norman Powell gives honest thoughts on getting ‘acclimated' since Heat trade

The post Norman Powell gives honest thoughts on getting 'acclimated' since Heat trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. With the Miami Heat trading for Norman Powell from the Los Angeles Clippers in the offseason, it's a move that has given the team a new level of excitement. As people around the Heat have praised the move to trade for Powell, the player himself speaks on getting used to his new surroundings. Powell has been recently practicing with the Jamaican national basketball team for the FIBA World Cup 2027 Americas pre-qualifiers, which have been taking place in Boca Raton, Florida. Specifically at Florida Atlantic University, where Miami has held training camp before, Powell would express how being in South Florida under this situation has been getting him 'acclimated,' according to The Miami Herald. 'It's getting me acclimated,' Powell said. 'It has been amazing to be welcomed here. Not only with the Jamaican national team, and that side of my culture that I'm embracing and learning about. But being here in South Florida, checking into the hotel, people already know who I am and welcome me and are excited about me being on the Heat.' 'It's been amazing,' Powell continued. 'I've always looked at my life as full-circle moments. Things that have been talked about and signs, and things that you don't really notice. But then it comes full circle. I was expecting training camp to be in Jamaica, but then I learned that it was in Boca. And then being traded to the Heat, being so close to where I'll be playing, and being able to go down there and go to the facility, look for a place to stay. … It's definitely cool.' Norman Powell on starting a new chapter with the Heat As Powell will now join the Heat's featured duo of Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, the former Los Angeles Clipper gives the team a much-needed gutpunch on offense, as they ranked towards the bottom of the league in offensive rating. Speaking after a recent practice with the Jamaican national team, he would also express how eager he is to start a new era in his basketball career. 'Honestly, I'm super excited about it,' Powell said. 'It's always a shock when you get traded, especially coming off the year that I had, and talking to the front office, and it's all about extensions and things like that. And then you get a little rumbling that it's a possibility, but not really. And then you get traded. So the shock is always there.' 'But the Heat, they've welcomed me with open arms,' Powell continued. 'They've talked about how much they've wanted me and liked my game throughout the year, and they've tried to get me. So to come to a place that values you and wants you here and understands what you bring to the table and wants you to be you, you can't be upset or mad about that at all.' Last season, Powell averaged 21.8 points per game on shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 41.8 percent from deep. Powell is hoping to help Miami improve this upcoming season, as they were 37-45, which put them 10th in the Eastern Conference. While they would make it through the play-in tournament as the first 10th seed to do so, the Heat would get swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Bam Adebayo's true feelings on ‘All-Star caliber' Norman Powell Heat addition

The post Bam Adebayo's true feelings on 'All-Star caliber' Norman Powell Heat addition appeared first on ClutchPoints. Ever since the Miami Heat traded for Norman Powell, it has no doubt brought a shock to the fanbase as the team found a much-needed gutpunch on offense. With the Heat amid the offseason, still looking to iron out the roster, star Bam Adebayo has broken his silence on his thoughts regarding the addition of Powell. The former Los Angeles Clippers guard had the best year in his NBA career this past season, averaging 21.8 points per game on shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 41.8 percent from deep. Adebayo said last Saturday that the move for Powell is a 'very good shake-up' for Miami, according to The Miami Herald. 'It's a very good shake-up for our team, and now there's a different dynamic to it,' Adebayo said. Adebayo was the one who put out the message after the season ended at the hands of a Cleveland Cavaliers sweep that changes were coming to the organization. The deal for Powell displayed that, with Adebayo no doubt being a fan of the move, saying that they added an 'All-Star caliber player.' 'I feel like Norman is one of those guys that floats under the radar,' Adebayo said. 'But as you saw this year, he's really shown that he can be an All-Star caliber player. You've seen what he's done, and you've seen him grow in this league. And, obviously, he wants to take the next challenge. Obviously, the next challenge is being with the Miami Heat. So I'm happy to have him.' Powell would praise Adebayo to ClutchPoints during his first press conference with the team, citing his excitement for the team-up. Heat's Bam Adebayo on the departures of Duncan Robinson, Kevin Love As the Heat will continue to be surrounded by rumors, the trade for Powell gives the team a different look and another weapon besides the featured duo of Adebayo and Tyler Herro. However, there were some decisions to be made in who gets traded from Miami's side, plus some other departures featuring a familiar place. In the Powell trade, the Heat would deal Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson (who came from the Jimmy Butler trade), and aside from that, long-time Miami sharpshooter Duncan Robinson would go to the Detroit Pistons in a sign-and-trade. Adebayo had been teammates with Robinson since the 2018-19 season and also had developed a close relationship with Love, as the star showed love to the two. 'I'm going to miss them, obviously,' Adebayo said. 'Just because Duncan has been here for eight years, and having that connection was special. And then K-Love was a leader that could speak to somebody from a championship level, could obviously encourage the younger group, be an example, but also he was the bridge between some of the coaches and the players. So like I said, I'm going to miss both of them. I'm glad we had the time that we did. It was, obviously, helpful for my growth and my development as a player and as a captain.' Miami is looking to improve after finishing last season at 37-45, which put them 10th in the Eastern Conference, though they would make it through the play-in tournament and punch their ticket to the playoffs. However, the Heat would be frustratingly swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA playoffs. The significant amount of time this key Heat player will miss

The post The significant amount of time this key Heat player will miss appeared first on ClutchPoints. While the Heat made headlines when trading for Norman Powell, other players on the team have proved to be vital, like defensive stalwart Haywood Highsmith. As Highsmith earned a contract extension from the Heat in the 2024 offseason, there is a chance he misses the start of the upcoming season due to the latest injury he has suffered. The team announced on their social media pages that Highsmith sustained a meniscal tear in his right knee during a training session in Baltimore. Highsmith would undergo a successful surgery to repair that lasted 35 minutes, but is 'expected to miss eight-to-1o weeks.' 'INJURY UPDATE: Haywood Highsmith underwent successful surgery this morning to repair a meniscal tear in his right knee, which he suffered while training in Baltimore,' the team wrote on their own X, formerly Twitter, account. 'He will begin rehabilitation immediately and is expected to miss eight-to-10 weeks. The 35-minute procedure was performed by HEAT team physician Dr. Harlan Selesnick at Doctors Hospital Surgery Center in Miami.' While his statistics might not pop off the screen, Highsmith is a key player in head coach Erik Spoelstra's rotation, being known for his defense and even giving the team a 'burst' when needed. Spoelstra would echo the same sentiments throughout last season. 'They've been giving us this kind of burst off the bench,' Spoelstra said of Highsmith and also Davion Mitchell in March. 'I mentioned that a couple games ago that your second unit, you want the energy to change. When your second unit comes in, it should feel different. And those two guys are embracing that kind of role. They're thriving in it and everybody can feel it.' Heat's Haywood Highsmith has been integral With the Heat also re-signing Davion Mitchell this offseason, the team has always prioritized the defensive side of the ball, and Highsmith encompasses that aspect. Spoelstra would even go as far as to compare Highsmith to that of former Miami player P.J. Tucker. 'You have to be ready, you have to always go to the other team's best players, you don't know whether you're going to start or whether you're going to come off the bench, and then as soon as you go in there, everybody's looking at the player you're guarding,' Spoelstra said in January. 'And then so those responsibilities and the expectations are tenfold, but that's the job, and there are a lot of people that would love to have that job, and Haywood was one of them.' 'The model that we've always kind of built, you know, for that, for him is the PJ Tucker, you know, role,' Spoelstra continued. 'You can carve out a great career and a great role, you know, doing those kinds of things, the dirty work, so to say. And he's embraced all that.' Training camp for the Heat is slated to begin on Sept. 30, which is seven weeks away, and with his timeline of missing eight-to-1o weeks, his status is in doubt.
