How to Obtain an International Driving Permit in Egypt

Copts Today24-03-2025
Driving internationally opens the door to freedom and adventure, but legal requirements vary by country. One essential document for international drivers is the International Driving Permit (IDP). For Egyptian citizens planning to travel abroad, or foreigners living in Egypt intending to drive overseas, its important to understand what an IDP is, where its accepted, and how to obtain one.
An International Driving Permit is a document that translates your domestic driving license into several widely spoken languages. It is governed by international conventions such as the 1949 Geneva Convention and the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
◾️ Recognized in over 150 countries.
◾️Valid alongside your original drivers license.
◾️Translates your license into 10+ languages.
◾️Typically valid for one year. What Its Not:
◾️ Not a replacement for your national drivers license.
◾️ Does not give you the right to drive if your national license is expired.
Where Do You Need an IDP?
Many countries require or strongly recommend having an IDP for foreign drivers, especially if your license is in a non-Latin script such as Arabic.
Examples of countries that require or recommend IDPs:
◾️ Italy, Spain, Greece, France (strongly recommended or required)
◾️ Japan, South Korea, Thailand (mandatory)
◾️ Brazil, Argentina, Chile (recommended for tourists)
◾️ UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait (required for tourists)
◾️ USA and Canada (varies by state/province, often recommended)
Having an IDP can prevent delays, legal issues, or denial of insurance coverage. How Egyptian Citizens Can Obtain an IDP
In Egypt, the IDP is issued by Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt (ATCE), under the supervision of the Ministry of Interior and in accordance with the 1949 Convention.
Requirements:
◾️ A valid Egyptian drivers license.
◾️ A national ID card or passport.
◾️ Two passport-sized photographs.
◾️ A completed application form.
◾️ Payment of the applicable fee (approximately EGP 500600). Steps to Apply:
◾️ Visit the Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt (ATCE) office in Cairo or other major cities.
◾️ Present the required documents and fill in the application form.
◾️ Pay the issuance fee.
◾️ Receive the IDP (often on the same day or within a few days). Validity:
◾️ Valid for 1 year from the date of issue.
◾️ Must always be accompanied by your original Egyptian license when driving abroad. Can Egyptian Drivers Use Their License Abroad Without an IDP?
While some countries accept Egyptian licenses for short visits, most require an IDP due to language or legal recognition issues. Without an IDP:
◾️ You may face legal penalties or fines.
◾️ Car rental agencies may refuse service.
◾️ Insurance claims may be denied after an accident.
To ensure compliance, Egyptian travelers should always carry an IDP when driving abroad. How Foreigners in Egypt Can Obtain an IDP?
Many expatriates and travelers in Egypt ask: Can I get an IDP based on my foreign license while living here? Short Answer: No
IDPs must be issued by the country that originally issued your driving license. Egyptian authorities do not issue IDPs to holders of foreign licenses. What Should Foreign Residents Do?
Apply for an IDP in Your Home Country:
◾️ Use your home countrys automobile club or licensing authority.
◾️ Many countries offer online or postal applications.
◾️ Contact Your Embassy in Egypt: Some embassies provide support or guidance for obtaining or renewing IDPs.
◾️ Carry Both Documents: Always travel with your original license and IDP when driving abroad.
◾️ Converting Foreign Licenses in Egypt: Foreigners staying in Egypt long-term can sometimes convert their foreign license into an Egyptian one. Rules vary depending on your country of origin. Tips for Egyptian Travelers Planning to Drive Abroad
◾️ Check driving laws in your destination before departure.
◾️ Carry your IDP and original license at all times.
◾️ Have your passport and visa ready for identification.
◾️ Understand local traffic rules and signage.
◾️ Use GPS or updated maps for navigation.
◾️ Avoid driving in unfamiliar conditions (e.g., snow, mountain roads) if you have limited experience.
Egyptian citizens can drive abroad legally and confidently by obtaining an International Driving Permit through the Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt. Though it is not a standalone license, the IDP is a powerful tool to ensure international recognition of your driving credentials.
Foreigners living in Egypt must apply for an IDP in their home country, as Egyptian authorities issue the permit only for Egyptian licenses. Regardless of your nationality, having an IDP is one of the smartest steps you can take to stay compliant, safe, and worry-free while driving abroad.

Grand Egyptian Museum: Gateway to Wonders, Affordable Exploration

SeeNews The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has emerged as one of the world's most anticipated cultural projects, positioned on the edge of the Giza Plateau, just two kilometers from the legendary Pyramids. As the largest archaeological museum ever dedicated to a single civilization, the GEM is not only a monumental architectural achievement but also a transformative gateway for lovers of history, solo adventurers, and budget-minded travelers to experience the timeless treasures of Egypt—including the complete collection of King Tutankhamun's artifacts—like never before. Unprecedented Access to Treasures: Tutankhamun and Egypt's Civilizations For the first time, the Grand Egyptian Museum will present all 5,000 artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun in a single immersive gallery. Here, visitors will marvel at the iconic golden death mask, nested shrines, ceremonial jewelry, chariots, and personal items that once belonged to the boy king. These artifacts, many previously unseen by the public, offer an unparalleled journey into ancient Egypt's daily life, spirituality, and royal splendor. But the museum's appeal extends far beyond the legacy of Tutankhamun. Within twelve meticulously curated exhibition halls, the GEM showcases over 100,000 objects from Egypt's vast history—spanning the prehistoric era through pharaonic dynasties, up to Greek, Roman, and later periods. Digital displays, interactive technology, and multilingual guided tours allow guests to engage deeply with the stories and achievements of ancient Egyptians, making the experience accessible and captivating for everyone. An Affordable Global Destination Thanks to Egypt's Currency Travelers now find Egypt more accessible than ever, and the GEM is a perfect illustration of this. In recent months, the Egyptian pound has traded at historic lows—around EGP48–49 per US dollar in August 2025—which has resulted in remarkably competitive pricing for entry fees, accommodations, and local experiences. For international visitors, this means your travel budget stretches much further, affording you premium experiences at a fraction of the price elsewhere. Accommodation Options for Solo Travelers and Young Explorers The Giza region, surrounding the museum, offers a rich diversity of accommodations at every price point—from boutique hotels and youth hostels to family-friendly guesthouses and chic rooftop stays overlooking the pyramids. Rooms in well-reviewed hotels start from as little as $21 per night. Many accommodations are within easy walking distance to the museum and offer amenities such as free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and personalized service, making them ideal for solo travelers and young backpackers looking for both community and comfort at superb rates[9][10]. Egypt's Legendary Cuisine: Quality, Affordability, and Cultural Experience One of the great joys of traveling to Egypt is indulging in its delicious local cuisine, which is celebrated not only for bold flavors but also for affordability. Cairo and Giza are filled with restaurants and street food stalls serving authentic dishes such as koshary, falafel, and grilled meats. As of August 2025, a meal at an inexpensive local restaurant typically costs between EGP100–400 (roughly $2–$8 USD), while a full three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant can be enjoyed for EGP600–2,000[11][12]. Even celebrated spots like Koshary Abou Tarek and Zooba remain excellent value, giving every visitor a chance to sample Egypt's most famous culinary exports. This affordability, coupled with consistently high food quality and the country's warm hospitality, makes Egypt ideal for budget-conscious travelers seeking authentic, memorable dining experiences. The diversity of food options caters to vegetarians, meat lovers, and those seeking halal-friendly fare—not to mention the popularity of Egypt's vibrant bakeries and café culture. The Museum: A Modern Marvel Occupying 480,000 square meters, the GEM stands as a masterpiece of modern architectural design. Highlights include a trapezoidal structure mirroring the Great Pyramid alignment, the Grand Entrance Hall showcasing Ramses II's monumental statue, and a translucent alabaster façade allowing soft natural light to fill the interior. Visitor services encompass immersive virtual reality tours, educational programs, well-stocked cafés and restaurants, and shops carrying certified replicas of museum artifacts, ensuring everyone's comfort and engagement. Welcoming All: From History Enthusiasts to Backpackers The Grand Egyptian Museum is a true gift to the world: an inclusive space welcoming history lovers, solo globetrotters, student groups, and families. With ticketing options designed to suit all budgets, and the museum's strategic location linked to affordable hotels and efficient transportation, the GEM invites everyone to discover the grandeur, mystery, and diversity of Egypt's past without barriers. Thanks to Egypt's economic circumstances, visitors can enjoy world-class hospitality, tantalizing food, and immersive cultural experiences at prices unmatched in other global destinations. Whether led by curiosity for Tutankhamun's glittering treasures, a hunger for adventure, or the quest to savor local cuisine, travelers to the Grand Egyptian Museum will find their expectations exceeded—and their passions for history and discovery truly fulfilled. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated

The Art of Enjoying the Annual Summer Getaway

Pasant Elzaitony Now that we are in the heart of summer, many people are planning their annual seaside getaway—a tradition that has become an integral part of the lifestyle of Egyptian and Arab families. A summer vacation is more than just a trip to the beach or a stay in a chalet; it is a social and emotional ritual that recharges the soul and creates memories to cherish for years to come. The Joy of Planning a Family or Friends' Getaway The success of any summer trip begins long before you hit the road. Coordinating the right time for everyone, securing accommodation that meets the group's needs, and dividing responsibilities—from preparing meals to arranging activities—are key to a smooth and enjoyable vacation. Agreeing in advance on a schedule that balances shared fun with personal downtime ensures comfort for all and helps create a warm, friendly atmosphere that lingers well beyond the holiday itself. Choosing the Perfect Destination The first step to a great summer vacation is selecting a location that suits both the group's character and budget. Some prefer the lively coastal cities like Alexandria and Alamein, with their bustling nightlife and markets, while others opt for the tranquility of more private resorts. Activities that Capture the Spirit of Summer The charm of the holiday lies in diversifying activities: Swimming and water sports: from boat rides to thrilling jet-ski adventures. Evening strolls: walking along the corniche, enjoying ice cream, and relaxing in seaside cafés. Beach sports: beach soccer, volleyball, or even yoga sessions at sunset. Food… A Flavor of the Experience No summer trip is complete without indulging in fresh seafood, whether at local restaurants or cooked in the chalet. Adding to the fun, evening barbecues with family and friends can turn a simple night into a highlight of the trip. Relaxation and Recharge The summer getaway is an opportunity to escape daily routines. It's important to set aside time to simply unwind on the beach with a good book or soft music, or to quietly take in the beauty of the sunset. Memories that Last Capture the moments in photos or videos—they will bring you back to those summer vibes long after the season ends. In short, the art of enjoying the annual summer getaway isn't about how long it lasts or how much it costs; it's about the little details we create and the spirit we carry with us, turning summer days into a tradition we look forward to year after year. read more 15 Ludicrous Cosplay Costumes That Will Blow You Away Watch...
