Racism mars Women's Euros as England's Jess Carter becomes latest victim
The 27-year-old, who has started all of the defending champions' matches so far, said she would take a step back from social media to focus on the tournament.
Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said his organisation 'immediately contacted UK police' as soon as it was made aware of the abuse and vowed to ensure 'those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice'.
The England team said instead of taking a knee to highlight racism, they would remain standing before Tuesday's semi-final against Italy, adding: 'It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism.'
Writing on her social media accounts, Carter, who has 49 England caps, said: 'From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse.
'Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's OK to target someone's appearance or race.
'As a result of this I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with.'
England forward Lauren James suffered online racist abuse after a defeat for her club side Chelsea in 2023.
England men's players Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho were targeted after the team's Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy.
England boss Sarina Wiegman said: 'I stand with Jess and all Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism.'
European football's governing body Uefa expressed its support for Carter while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on X that 'there is no place for racism in football or anywhere in society'. — AFP

X complained of bias in French authorities' choice of experts to examine its algorithm. (EPA Images pic) PARIS : A French probe into alleged foreign interference and bias via the algorithm at Elon Musk-owned social network X is 'politically motivated', the company said in a post today, adding that it was refusing to cooperate. 'X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech,' the social network said. It added that it 'has not acceded to the French authorities' demands' to access its recommendation algorithm and real-time data, 'as we have a legal right to do'. Cybercrime prosecutors announced the opening of the probe on July 11 into suspected crimes including manipulating and extracting data from automated systems 'as part of a criminal gang'. The move followed two complaints received in January about 'foreign interference' in French politics via X – one of them from Eric Bothorel, an MP from president Emmanuel Macron's centrist party. Bothorel had complained of 'reduced diversity of voices and options' and Musk's 'personal interventions' on the network since his 2022 takeover of the former Twitter. The Tesla and SpaceX chief has raised hackles in Europe with political sallies, including vocal backing for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of February legislative elections. 'Democracy is too fragile to let digital platform owners tell us what to think, who to vote for or even who to hate,' Bothorel said after the investigation was announced. The company responded today saying, 'Mr Bothorel has accused X of manipulating its algorithm for 'foreign interference' purposes, an allegation which is completely false.' Prosecutors have not confirmed whether they are also investigating under a French law against foreign interference in politics passed last year. X also complained of bias in French authorities' choice of experts to examine its algorithm, including mathematician David Chavalarias and computer scientist Maziyar Panahi. Both have been involved in a scheme called 'HelloQuitteX', designed to make it easier for users to migrate their X presence to other social networks. Picking them 'raises serious concerns about the impartiality, fairness and political motivations of the investigation', the company said. It also objected to the use of the 'organised gang' aggravating circumstance. The characterisation 'is usually reserved for drug cartels or mafia groups' and 'enables the French police to deploy extensive investigative powers… including wiretapping the personal devices of X employees', the company said.

Liverpool pip Newcastle, Man United in race for Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike
LONDON, July 22 — Liverpool have agreed to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth an initial £69 million (RM400 million), according to reports on Monday. The Premier League champions switched their focus to Ekitike following Newcastle's refusal to sell Sweden striker Alexander Isak, who is valued at around £150 million by the Magpies. Newcastle and Manchester United were also interested in Ekitike, but Liverpool look set to win the race for one of Europe's hottest young stars. It is believed the Reds have agreed to pay a potential further £10 million in add-ons to sign the 23-year-old Frenchman, whose overall price tag could reach £79 million. Once the transfer is completed, Ekitike will link up with Arne Slot's side on their pre-season tour of Asia. Ekitike scored 22 goals in 48 games in all competitions for Frankfurt last season after joining the Bundesliga club from Paris Saint-Germain. Man United clinch RM370m deal for Brentford's star forward Bryan Mbeumo
LONDON, July 22 — Manchester United have signed forward Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford until 2030, with the option to extend for a further year, United said on Monday. United paid £65 million pounds (RM370 million) to Brentford, with another £6 million potentially due in add-ons, for the 25-year-old Cameroon international, according to a club source. Mbeumo hit new heights in the 2024-25 league season, finishing with 20 goals to help Brentford to a solid 10th-place finish. Only Mohamed Salah (29), Alexander Isak (23) and Erling Haaland (22) scored more. 'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams, the team whose shirt I wore growing up,' he said.
