An 'unusually large' treasure trove of gold coins, tobacco boxes, and jewelry was recently discovered by two hikers in the Czech Republic.
In a statement obtained by Fox News, the Museum of East Bohemia in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic, confirmed that a 15-pound 'depot of gold coins, jewelry and tobacco boxes' was found by two hikers and delivered to the museum in February.
A Museum of East Bohemia press release obtained by Fox News stated, '[T]wo finders discovered two boxes in an artificially created stone wall on the edge of a now non-existent field overgrown with forest during a tourist walk on the southwestern slope of Zvičina Hill.'
A picture shared on X, formerly Twitter, shows the large collection of gold coins, bars, and rings found by the hikers in the overgrown Czech Republic field. The picture reveals that some of the gold items have been tarnished due to age.
Whoa, what a find! Hikers in the Czech Republic uncovered a $340K stash of gold coins & jewelry near Zvičina Hill! Hidden since WWII, this treasure's now at the Museum of East Bohemia. Keep hunting, folks! pic.twitter.com/oie6TkDoRI — @_Treasure_Kings_ (@_Treasure_Kings) April 30, 2025
According to Fox News, the Museum of East Bohemia confirmed that 598 coins were found in a container that was 'divided into 11 columns and wrapped in black fabric.' The museum said, 'In a metal box found about a meter away, objects made of yellow metal were stored — 16 tobacco boxes, 10 bracelets, a bag made of fine wire mesh, a comb, a chain with a key, and a powder box.'
Fox News reported that Miroslav Novák, an archaeologist at the Museum of East Bohemia, described the hikers' discovery as a 'unique find.'
'Storing valuable objects in the ground as treasures, known as depots, has been common practice since prehistoric times,' Novák said. 'Initially, religious motives were more common, but later it was property stored during uncertain times with the intention of retrieving it later. This find is notable for the unusually large weight of precious metal.'

Fox News reported that the Czech Republic gold discovery is an unusual find since the earliest coins in the treasure trove are only from 1808. Vojtěch Brádle, a coin specialist with the Museum of East Bohemia, noted that the treasure was buried for 'just over 100 years.'
'Based on the dates stamped on them, the coins range from 1808 to 1915,' Brádle said. 'However, the year 1915 is not decisive for determining when the depot was placed there.'
Brádle explained that marks stamped on the coins indicate that the gold coins must have been buried after World War I.
'These marks were stamped on coins in the territory of former Yugoslavia during the 1920s and 1930s,' Brádle said. 'Within the context of domestic finds, this collection is very specific, as most of it consists of coins of French origin, and besides Austrian-Hungarian coins, it also includes Belgian and Ottoman coins.'

Japanese-French Twin Chefs Bring Kappo Dining to Austin this Fall

Austin Proper Hotel has announced it will open Kappo Kappo, a 25-seat tasting counter that blends Japanese kappo dining with French culinary techniques later this year. The restaurant will be led by twin brothers Haru and Gohei Kishi, who ran the now-closed Proper Sandos by Kishi pop-up in the same space. Designed by Kelly Wearstler and Proper Hotels, the downtown restaurant will feature charred cypress, stone, and warm millwork in a nod to traditional Japanese craftsmanship. At the heart of the concept is kappo, a Japanese style of dining that translates to 'cut and cook.' Guests sit at a counter while chefs prepare and serve each course in real time, a format that emphasizes seasonality, precision, and intimacy. Kappo Kappo's 11-course menu will spotlight wagyu from both Texas and Japan, seafood sourced directly from Tokyo's Toyosu Market, and produce from local farms. Optional beverage pairings will include sake, wine, beer, and cocktails. The intention was to source all food locally, but the chefs say this isn't possible for certain ingredients, considering the quality they're aiming for. The twin brothers in the kitchen Proper Sandos. Proper Sandos by Kishi 'Seafood from Japan is different — it's more flavorful because the waters around the islands are so nutrient-rich,' Gohei says. 'Rain carries minerals down from the mountains into the sea, and that environment gives the fish an incredible taste.' This is the sort of deep insight into the process that Kappo Kappo will offer diners. The brothers also plan to incorporate omiyage, the Japanese tradition of sending diners home with a small parting gift meant to extend the hospitality of the restaurant. For those unfamiliar with the term, kappo may sound a lot like omakase, but the brothers note that it differs in one key way: intimacy. Rather than leaving everything completely in the chef's hands, guests are invited into the process, able to watch, learn, and interact with chefs as each dish comes together. 'The storytelling component is important,' Haru says. 'When there's meaning behind a dish, it has more impact — it's not just flavor, it's memory.' Born in France to Japanese parents, the brothers say that Kappo Kappo is a natural expression of their upbringing. Gohei pursued a career in Japanese cuisine, while Haru trained in French traditions, including time with Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay. Between them, they bring decades of international experience across Paris, Tokyo, London, Los Angeles, Dubai, and Madrid. Outside of the brief Proper Sandos pop-up, this is the first time the two are cooking side-by-side, professionally at least. While Kappo Kappo will mostly focus on Japanese food, the French element will mainly manifest on the menu in the form of classic techniques. The inspiration for Kappo Kappo emanates from the Kishi brothers' childhoods. 'When we were kids, our parents had a ritual called 'on est bien,' which in French means 'we are good' or 'we feel good,'' Haru says. 'For us, it was about having really good food, really good drinks, and being together in a joyful place. That feeling is what we're bringing forward here.'

Starmer returns to Scotland after family holiday interrupted by Ukraine talks

Sir Keir Starmer has returned to Scotland after a family holiday was interrupted by crunch talks on Ukraine in Washington DC. The Prime Minister's plane flew from the US to Glasgow overnight following the White House discussions, landing on Tuesday morning. It had taken off from the same airport the previous day when Sir Keir was heading to the US for the brief trip. On his return to Scotland, Sir Keir will co-chair a call of the so-called 'coalition of the willing', a group of nations looking to help Ukraine that he has been leading with French President Emmanuel Macron. It is the second summer in a row that the Prime Minister's holiday plans have been disrupted after he cancelled a European trip last August when rioting broke out in the UK and tensions escalated in the Middle East. The Prime Minister also delayed his departure for a trip last Christmas following the death of his brother aged 60 who had been suffering from cancer. A minister has said it is an 'occupational hazard' that prime ministers can see their holidays disrupted. Pensions minister Torsten Bell told Sky News that Sir Keir has been making a 'real difference' in the negotiations over Ukraine. He told the broadcaster: 'It is an occupational hazard for prime ministers that holidays are interrupted. You'll have been covering that for years. 'I've been around British politics enough to have seen that happen, unfortunately, year after year. 'I want the Prime Minister to have a rest […] all we want to do is make sure that we're addressing these big issues, and that in this summer means making sure we get those security guarantees in Ukraine.'

One Shot: ‘American Primeval' didn't try to create beauty, but to find it

Cinematographer Jacques Jouffret photographed 'American Primeval' to reflect its sparse 1857 Utah environment, as a mother (Betty Gilpin) and son (Preston Mota) travel across untamed lands to reunite with her husband. 'They don't have much to eat, much clothes or transportation. They have to live in the elements, and we used that from a camera standpoint. No big equipment, most of it handheld. A very straightforward approach to create a connection between the characters and camera,' says the French native, who collaborated with director Peter Berg on the raw, unflinching imagery. 'I wanted to give as much information in the frame as I could. We are going to be wide and we're going to be close, but let's not have empty spaces,' he says about the series' visceral texture. He adds: 'We never tried to say, 'Let's do a beautiful shot.' What we tried to do is see what happened and find the beauty in the frame.' The series' visual motifs, created with the help of camera operators Brett Hurd and Richard Coy Aune, reinforce the unsettling conditions behind the settlement of the American frontier: 'There are many different factions fighting it out, and from that violence, you never know who is going to win. We are on shaky ground, and the constant Dutch angles left or right are a reflection of that,' he says.
