Quadruple stabbing in south London ‘was targeted attack'
A quadruple stabbing in south London that left two dead was a 'targeted attack', it has been claimed. Emergency services were called to Long Lane, Southwark, at about 1pm on Monday after reports of multiple stabbings inside a business premises, where they found and treated four people. A 58-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and three other men were taken to hospital, the Metropolitan Police said. A 27-year-old man later died in hospital, police said, while a third man, in his 30s, remains in a life-threatening condition. On Tuesday, police said a 31-year-old man, who is a British citizen and was initially detained in connection with the incident, was arrested on Monday. He remains in hospital and his condition is not life-threatening, they added. The stabbing is understood to have taken place near consultancy firm Prospira Global and housing provider Trademark Homes. Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, who leads policing for the area, said: 'Our thoughts are first and foremost with the family and friends of the victims of this tragic incident. 'Our investigation continues at pace and we are working hard to understand the full circumstances. 'I understand there may be concern in the local community and there will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days. 'I would also encourage anyone who may be worried to speak to an officer.' Neil Coyle, the Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, said earlier on Tuesday that the incident was a 'targeted attack'. He told reporters outside the police cordon on Tuesday: 'This is truly awful. It's absolutely devastating for the family and the local community. Thankfully, police say this was an isolated incident. 'There's no excuse for what happened, but there's no further risk to the public. 'Police believe they have witnesses, but if anyone else saw anything, please contact the police and share any information you have. 'Lots of people will be shaken. 'As the local MP, I want to send my condolences to the family and everyone directly affected. But this is a safe community. 'This was a targeted, isolated incident... as you can see, police are investigating thoroughly. 'Paramedics also did everything they could yesterday to try to save lives.' Mr Coyle also pleaded with witnesses to come forward. He added: 'My message to the community is this: if you saw anything, please come forward. And if you didn't, but you're worried, know that this remains a safe area. 'There is no ongoing threat to public safety. I'm working closely with police and the local council. 'The investigation is ongoing, but when more information can be shared, it will be. My job is to make sure my constituents are kept informed and reassured that there's no wider risk.' A resident, who asked not to be named, said: 'It's terrifying. I walk past there all the time – it makes you feel really uneasy. 'You just don't expect something like this to happen on a normal weekday.'
