Family, community mourn Oakland teacher killed by vehicle fleeing CHP
Boomer's partner, Nina Woodruff, spoke through tears at the emotional memorial service at Acts Full Gospel Church, recounting the night of the tragedy and their deep connection.
"He called me Mrs. Everything, and I called him Dr./Mr. Wonderful Boomer," Woodruff said.
The couple had been out for an evening walk near the intersection of East 21st Street and 12th Avenue when an out-of-control car struck them on the sidewalk. Woodruff, who is still recovering from her injuries, believes Boomer saved her life.
"I'm hurt, and my physical pain is nothing compared to where my heart is. It's broken," she said.
Authorities said the driver, Eric Hernandez Garcia, lost control of the vehicle while fleeing from the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said its officers had already ended the pursuit before the crash occurred.
"We had no idea what we were walking into. It's reckless. It's not fair," said Woodruff. "There's enough blame to go around to everyone that participated in what happened to my Mr. Wonderful."
Boomer's family echoed her pain, directing anger toward law enforcement and the circumstances surrounding his death.
"What happened to my brother was senseless, tragic, reckless," said his sister Tynesha Boomer. "Our family is completely heartbroken. It doesn't make any sense what happened. It makes zero sense."
Boomer was a beloved teacher at Castlemont High School, where he was known for his passion for education and commitment to serving students in underserved communities.
"Marvin loved his community. He was driven by his desire to want to help people," said his father, Marvin Boomer Sr.
"He loved Oakland. He loved his students," added his mother, Tina Boomer.
During the open-casket service, which was attended by students, colleagues, and community members, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee read a proclamation in Boomer's honor.
"He taught math, yes, but what he really taught was possibility - that an equation can open a door, and that a seed can grow into a meal, and yes, that a paycheck can grow into a career," said Lee.
Woodruff said she is drawing strength from the many students Boomer mentored and inspired during his career.
"It's not fair. It's not right. I'm angry," she said.
The Boomer family's attorney, Michelle Bernard, announced that the family plans to file a civil lawsuit in the coming weeks. The suit will be directed at the driver, the CHP, and possibly the City of Oakland.

The GoFundMe totalled almost $20,000 as concerned citizens looked to support the cause. A Facebook Page set up for the search effort led several flyer events, petitions, and meetups in the city to help find the dog. On August 12, a post read: 'We are incredibly grateful to be working with an amazing group of volunteers who are organizing walking routes and flyering to reach local residents who may not have heard Angel and Bam Bam's story.| Thankfully, after nearly three months of desperate searching, Bam Bam was found. On Tuesday evening, Chicago police said an unidentified man and woman dropped off a white-and-yellow dachshund mix at the 16th District police station. Police quickly confirmed the animal to be Bam Bam. Santiago, who is both blind and has Type 2 diabetes, rushed to the station to be reunited with Bam Bam, say police. The dog was reportedly in good health when it was recovered, police said. As it stands, no arrests have been made. A team of detectives is continuing to investigate the circumstances of how the dog ended up at the station. The pair who dropped off Bam Bam refused to hand over any information to the police before leaving, according to authorities.

Students in Michigan City, Indiana were treated to a surprise day of remote learning this week when drivers arrived Tuesday to find that their buses had been stripped of their catalytic converters. According to local officials, more than a third of the school district's buses were targeted in the overnight caper. The district was forced to cancel in-person classes for all grade levels on Tuesday, pivoting instead to remote learning. Buses were made available for elementary and pre-school students on Wednesday, while middle and high school students got another day of remote learning. The first driver to depart the district's garage Tuesday morning was tipped off by her bus's unmuffled exhaust. School district staff quickly inspected the rest of the fleet and found more than a dozen others were also missing. While the district refers to its bus depot as a 'garage,' that term is being used more to refer to the fact that its service facilities are present there. The fleet is far too large to fit in any of the buildings visible in aerial imagery of the property, which is wooded in on two sides and essentially invisible from the street. Catalytic converters are integrated into automotive exhaust systems. These hot chambers are mounted away from the passenger compartment, usually low in the rear of the vehicle, where they can be easily accessed from below, especially on a high-riding vehicle like a school bus. Trump admin imposes sanctions on more International Criminal Court officials
The Trump administration escalated its fight against the International Criminal Court by imposing sanctions on four more court officials involved in work related to alleged Israeli and US war crimes. In a statement Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the State Department was designating Kimberly Prost of Canada, Nicolas Guillou of France, Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal for their work in the ICC 'to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute nationals of the United States or Israel, without the consent of either nation.' The sanctions were imposed under an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in February that authorizes punitive measures like sanctions and possible entrance bans on ICC personnel because of its 'illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel.' The executive order was already used to sanction ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan and four ICC judges. According to a State Department fact sheet, Prost, an ICC judge 'is being designated for ruling to authorize the ICC's investigation into U.S. personnel in Afghanistan.' Guillou, another judge, 'is being designated for ruling to authorize the ICC's issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant,' the fact sheet said. 'Deputy Prosecutors Shameem Khan and Niang are being designated for continuing to support illegitimate ICC actions against Israel, including upholding the ICC's arrest warrants targeting Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant since they assumed leadership for the ICC's Office of the Prosecutor,' it said. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant in November 2024 for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Trump also signed an executive order authorizing sanctions and visa restrictions for members of the court during his first term in 2020, months after the ICC authorized a probe into alleged war crimes committed in Afghanistan by US and Afghan forces as well as alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Taliban.
