Cklamovski coy on Harimau Malaya's new heritage players
KUALA LUMPUR: The status of several new heritage players rumoured to be joining Harimau Malaya ahead of their Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam on 10 June remains uncertain.
National head coach Peter Cklamovski refused to confirm or deny reports that at least three new heritage players will link up with the squad soon.
The Australian tactician even claimed that some of the foreign names circulating on social media were unfamiliar to him.
"There are a lot of names out there being mentioned by the media, including some I've never even seen before," said Cklamovski at a press conference in Bukit Jalil on Monday.
"There's a lot of speculation, but at this point, you probably know more than I do.
"We're focused on the tough match against Cape Verde tomorrow, which is part of our preparation for the final phase.
"Everyone keeps asking about heritage players and all that. It's great to feel the interest and support from Malaysian football fans — that's what makes Malaysian football special."
One name that has generated buzz online is Rodrigo Holgado, with reports suggesting the 29-year-old striker is on his way to join the national squad.
The development was shared by Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra on social media platform X, where he claimed Holgado had been sent all necessary documents and flight tickets to report for national duty.
"The Malaysian national team have sent all the documents and flight tickets for Rodrigo Holgado to travel and join the Asian squad.
"The America forward is expected to report on Tuesday for his first training camp with the national team," Sierra posted.
Another player making headlines social media is Spanish-born striker Jefte Betancor, who is also believed to be among the new heritage players set to don Harimau Malaya colours.
This follows a viral screenshot allegedly from Betancor's Instagram, showing a Malaysian passport snapped at an airport — further fuelling speculation.
If confirmed, it would be a major coup for Harimau Malaya, as Betancor has an impressive reputation, having finished as top scorer in the Greek Super League for the 2024-25 season.
Meanwhile, Jon Irazabal, another name previously linked to Malaysia, is also reportedly set to join the national team ahead of the crucial clash against Vietnam.
Harimau Malaya will face Cape Verde in a closed-door friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday.

Malaysia-UK joint committee to boost franchise ecosystem
LONDON: A joint committee between Malaysian and United Kingdom (UK) franchise business associations will be established to strengthen Malaysia's franchise ecosystem in the UK, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Rural and Regional Development Minister said the initiative would serve as a support platform to help Malaysian franchise brands penetrate the UK market by next year. 'There are plenty of opportunities for Malaysian companies to expand their franchise businesses in the UK, especially in halal-related sectors such as food, traditional medicine and cosmetics. 'I will chair the Cabinet committee on franchises. I will obtain reports on the progress that can be made promptly, and I will review the achievements every six months when I chair this Cabinet committee twice a year,' he told a press conference here Tuesday. Earlier, he attended the Malaysia-UK Franchise Business Dialogue, held in conjunction with his four-day working visit to the UK. Ahmad Zahid added that Malaysia is also committed to supporting the franchise ecosystem through financing policies by the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) and digital grants from the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), with the aim of achieving RM100 billion in sales by 2030. He said closer cooperation would be pursued to encourage UK franchises to explore the ASEAN market via Malaysia, while at the same time promoting the expansion of Malaysian brands into the UK market through the proposed committee.

Malaysia and UK form joint committee to boost franchise cooperation
LONDON: A joint committee between the Malaysian and United Kingdom franchise associations will be established to enhance cooperation, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said that the committee is necessary to provide more market exposure for Malaysian companies. "We believe there is significant potential for Malaysian companies to establish and expand their franchises in the UK, especially in halal products such as food and beverages, education, cosmetics, and traditional Malay medicine. "The committee must be formed immediately, and I will monitor its performance every six months through the cabinet committee on franchise, which I chair," he told reporters after launching Visit Malaysia 2026 in London on Tuesday (June 3). Ahmad Zahid said the decision followed a dialogue session with franchise players from Malaysia and the UK towards the end of his working visit to Britain. The Deputy Prime Minister, who also held a dialogue session with tourism industry players in Britain, emphasised the importance of engaging with various industry parties rather than solely relying on government-to-government talks. "What is more important is business-to-business as well as people-to-people engagements. I believe such engagements will significantly impact both the country and Britain," he said.

Malaysia rolls out warm welcome for Guinea-Bissau president
PUTRAJAYA: President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló received an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex today. His arrival was greeted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at 9.00am. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Fadillah Yusof, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. Also in attendance were several deputy ministers, senior government officials and diplomats. Guinea-Bissau is a country in West Africa, bordered by Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south and east. Its capital is Bissau. Embaló, who is on a four-day visit, then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 officers of different ranks, led by Major Mohamad Waqiyuddin Abdul Rahman, from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment. This official visit marks his first visit to Malaysia since assuming office as the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau in February 2020. Anwar will host Embaló and his delegation which includes the Republic's Minister of Economic Planning and Regional Integration, Soares Sambú, as well as senior officials from the Cabinet at a luncheon today. Wisma Putra in a statement yesterday said the visit reflects the shared commitment of both Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau to further strengthen bilateral relations and explore new avenues of cooperation, building upon the warm and longstanding ties that have united the two nations. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. Bilateral ties between the two countries remain cordial, based on a shared commitment to cooperation on both bilateral and multilateral platforms, including the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.
