Blow to YSRCP, boost for BJP as Andhra's first woman Muslim MLC switches sides
In what is being seen as a rude shock to the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), MLC and Deputy Chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council, Mayana Zakia Khanam on Wednesday quit the party and joined the BJP.
While her move surprised many in the YSRCP, the Andhra BJP unit was present in full strength to welcome Khanam to the party, including state president and Rajahmundry MP Daggubati Purandeswari, state Health Minister and BJP MLA Y Satya Kumar, and other party leaders.
Claiming that Khanam joined the BJP as she was inspired by the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Purandeswari reiterated the BJP slogan of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas'. 'We deliver welfare beyond caste and religion and focus on the underprivileged and marginalised sections. Khanam's induction reflects a major shift and strengthens our commitment to inclusive leadership, while signaling a growing trust for the party among minorities,' she said.
Seen as a popular Muslim face of the YSRCP, Khanam joins a list of high-profile leaders who have quit the party following the drubbing received by it in last year's simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, where it was reduced to four and 11 seats respectively.
Since its defeat, the YSRCP has been stung by the exits of several leaders, including Jagan's long-time aide and former Rajya Sabha MP V Vijayasai Reddy, and Rajya Sabha MPs Mopidevi Venkataramana, Beedha Mastan Rao and R Krishnaiah. While Rao is now a TDP Rajya Sabha MP, Krishnaiah was nominated to the Upper House by the BJP.
Khanam had become the first Muslim wwoman member of the Andhra Legislative Council in July 2020. She was nominated by then Governor Biswabhushan Harichandran under the Governor's quota. In November 2021, she was elevated to the post of Deputy Chairperson.
Khanam's resignation further reduces the YSRCP's tally in the 58-member Upper House, though the party still enjoys majority in the Council, as it comes close on the heels of MLCs Balli Kalyan Chakravarthy, Karri Padmasri, Pothla Suneetha, Marri Rajasekhar and Jayamangala Venkataramana quitting the party. With none of the resignations accepted yet, the YSRCP's tally in the House still stands at 32. The ruling TDP-BJP-Jana Sena Party (JSP) have 10, one and two members respectively, while the Council has five Independents and eight nominated members.
Sources said all the MLCs who resigned had issues with the party leadership. 'Khanam also expressed disappointment but still holds Jagan (the YSRCP chief) in high regard,' a source said.

However, Newton insisted that he was an Indian citizen and showed documents, including a PAN card and Aadhaar card, to support his claim. However, he did not clarify on whether he lived in India or Bangladesh. 'Unexpectedly Got Caught Up' 'I had travelled to Bangladesh in 2024 for some issues related to our ancestral property, but I unexpectedly got caught up in the revolution there. I have been a voter in Kakdwip since 2014," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying in a video message. 'Although I lost my voter card in 2017, I managed to get a new one the following year with help from the local MLA, Manturam Pakhira. I also cast my vote during the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections." BJP Mathurapur organisational district secretary Sanjay Das alleged that 'the Trinamool Congress is actively helping Bangladeshi infiltrators to enter India. In response, the TMC rejected the allegations, shifting the blame to the Centre and the Border Security Force (BSF), which guards the Indo-Bangladesh border. 'Our state government will do its part, but it's up to the Union government to ensure security," TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said. Satra Aayog submits its final report to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Guwahati: The Satra Aayog formed for reviewing and assessing the problems of the Satra lands in Assam, submitted its final report to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma . It may be noted that the Aayog formed on 24th November, 2021 with MLA Pradip Hazarika as its Chairman and MLAs Mrinal Saikia and Rupak Sarma as its members, visited around 126 satras, examined the existing problems there and submitted the report, giving several recommendations. Thanking the Satra Aayog for its final report, Sarma said, 'In the socio-cultural life of Assam, submission of the final report marks an important day for the state. I consider myself happy to receive the final report of the Aayog which reviewed and assessed the problems of Satra lands necessitated because of encroachment. The government will study the report very minutely and exhaustively to meet its recommendations'. The Chief Minister on the occasion also announced that his government would constitute a permanent Satra Aayog which would be empowered financially, administratively to work for the benefits and welfare of the satras. He also said that the Aayog will work on forming a 25 year long vision plan to revamp the institutional framework of the Satras. The Aayog would also work to lend sustainability of the Satras across the state. Sarma also said that in socio-cultural and spiritual life of the state, Satras play an important role. Live Events He moreover said that Srimanta Sankardeva by introducing neo-vaishnavism , took crucial role in setting up the Satras for discussing and preaching culture and spiritual values across the state. He also said that Srimanta Sankardeva, Madhavdeva, Sri Damodeva, Sri Harideva established the satras. He said that today the Satras are confronted with various problems. However, no other government took the initiative to address the problems of the Satras. However, once the BJP led dispensation assumed power in the state, the government took steps to save the satras and lend vitality in them. Therefore, the present State government formed this Satra Aayog to find out the problems especially land encroachment that grapple the Satras across the state. He thanked the Satra Aayog for its exhaustive study, which would help the government to take remedial steps and protect the Satras. The Chief Minister moreover, said that more youth should come to the fold of the Satra culture and lend more vitality to them. Sarma said that bigger Satras should take upon themselves to help the small Satras. They should also indulge in transformative works to empower all the satras to spread the tenets of vaishnavism. He said that it would be very difficult for the government to empower all the 922 satras, ee, therefore, appealed to the people of Assam to work collectively to protect the Satra lands and help them work for the mission they were established.

No guarantee when Cong govt will fall, says R Ashoka
Mangaluru: Opposition leader R Ashoka said that there is no guarantee for the Congress govt in Karnataka. "Only two years remain, but there is no guarantee when this govt will fall. All police stations here have been made Congress stations. Mangaluru City police commissioner and the SP of Dakshina Kannada were transferred only to ensure that the police department dances to the tunes of the govt," Ashoka told reporters here on Monday. "The BJP delegation led by BY Vijayendra has sought answers from police officials on the legal grounds on which police knock on the doors of Hindu activists during midnight. Police should serve notice before conducting such raids. Police do not take initiatives to deport Pakistan and Bangladesh nationals," he said. He suspected the involvement of anti-national elements from Kerala and Pakistan in the murder of Suhas Shetty. "The banned PFI is involved in it, and there is a need to find the source of their funding. We are confident that the NIA will bring all facts to light," he said. In response to a query on MLC BK Hariprasad's statements questioning the necessity of an NIA probe into the murder of Suhas Shetty, as he was a rowdy-sheeter, Ashoka said that there are many definitions for a rowdy-sheeter. "How many cases does DK Shivakumar have, and didn't he go to jail? In how many cases has Rahul Gandhi obtained bail? The court should decide who is a convict," he said.
