"Monster": Officials react to James Taylor arrest; one calls for suspension by governor

St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro
At a news conference shortly after his office made the arrest, St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro addressed Taylor's position as an elected official.
'Obviously in this case he is a public official, but nobody is above the law, and this case is going to be handled with the utmost integrity and transparency and relentless follow up that we do here at the Sheriff's Office,' Del Toro said.
Fort Pierce City Hall
Fort Pierce Marketing and Communications Manager Kaitlyn Ballard issued a statement on behalf of the city.
"The city of Fort Pierce is aware of the recent arrest of Commissioner James Taylor. We understand that this development may raise concerns within our community, and we want to reassure our residents that we remain committed to serving the public with integrity, transparency and accountability," Ballard wrote. "While this matter is serious, it is important to recognize that the City Commission operates as a unified governing body. City functions will continue without disruption. Our dedicated staff remains focused on delivering essential services, maintaining public trust and upholding the mission and values that guide the city of Fort Pierce."
Th.e city will make no additional comments at this time, Ballard said.
Neither City Manager Richard Chess, Mayor Linda Hudson nor commissioners Arnold Gaines and Curtis Johnson responded to requests for comment.
Commissioner Michael Broderick
For his part, City Commissioner Michael Broderick said he would like to see Taylor resign. But there still are things he and his fellow commissioners don't know.
"It's a very unfortunate set of circumstances. It's very unfortunate for the families involved. It's very unfortunate for the city of Fort Pierce," Broderick said. "We need to wait for the process to play itself out to find out all of the facts.'
State Rep. Toby Overdorf
In a statement, state Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City, called on Gov. Ron DeSantis to suspend Taylor from the City Commission immediately, calling Taylor a "monster." Overdorf is a member of the Governor's Task Force Against Human Trafficking.

"The arrest of Fort Pierce City Commissioner James Taylor for 24 felony counts of child exploitation is beyond sickening — a disgusting betrayal that chills the soul,' Overdorf wrote.
"There is no room in our state for this filth — justice must be swift and unrelenting!" he also wrote.
The governor's communications office did not respond to requests to comment.

Former Mormon missionary arrested in Pittsburgh, accused of sexually abusing minors
A former missionary was arrested Thursday in Pittsburgh on accusations that he sexually abused several minors while in Tonga. William James Purdy, 28, of West Valley, Utah, was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 16 on charges related to the exploitation of minors outside the United States. Court documents say Purdy traveled to Tonga in 2017 for his mission with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While there, he allegedly sexually abused multiple underage boys, according to a media release from the Department of Justice. Purdy then returned to Tonga in late 2019 to teach at a school in Nuku'alofa. Purdy is alleged to have groomed and sexually abused "numerous" male students over several years. He allegedly provided gifts, including electronic devices and internet access, food, toys, and money, in exchange for performing sexual acts, authorities say. Purdy is also alleged to have recorded underage boys in his bathroom at his various Tonga apartments without their knowledge. Purdy was arrested by Tonga police in October 2022, when an eight‑year‑old boy disclosed that Purdy sexually assaulted him during a tutoring sessions. When Purdy was released from jail, he allegedly continued to sexually abuse children. In March 2023, just before his scheduled trial, Purdy fled Tonga using an assumed identity and returned to Utah. By this point in the investigation, 14 minors were identified as abuse victims throughout Tonga. "The defendant in this case chose to travel abroad under the guise of good intentions and then sexually exploited and abused children who had been trusted to his care," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Galeotti of the Justice Department's Criminal Division. "When foreign authorities sought to hold him accountable, he fled back to the United States. The United States will not export child exploitation. The Justice Department is committed to securing justice for children exploited overseas when these heinous acts are committed by Americans." "William James Purdy's actions represent a profound betrayal of trust and have caused immeasurable harm to the young lives he was supposed to protect and nurture," said Special Agent in Charge Edward V. Owens of Homeland Security Investigations Philadelphia. "HSI's global reach and partnerships are crucial in our relentless fight against child predators, ensuring that those who exploit and abuse children, no matter where they are, are brought to justice. We remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society and will continue to work tirelessly to prevent such heinous crimes." The case continues to be investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Diplomatic Security Service, with the assistance of the Tonga police and the Tongan Department of Public Prosecutions.

Man found shot dead inside car parked near Miami-Dade flea market was having affair with shooter's wife, arrest documents say
Two weeks after a man was shot in a car parked near a Northwest Miami-Dade flea market, arrest documents revealed he was in an alleged "romantic affair" with the accused shooter's wife before dying at the hospital. According to arrest documents obtained by CBS News Miami, 69-year-old Omar Aguila was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on the charges of second-degree murder and possessing a weapon as a convicted felon for allegedly shooting the man accused of having an affair with his wife and leaving him for dead inside of a car parked outside the Village Flea Market on July 12. Just before 5:55 p.m. on July 12, Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Northside district deputies responded to the flea market near Northwest 79th Street and 27th Avenue regarding a shooting in the parking lot. Upon arrival, deputies found a man "sitting inside of a vehicle suffering from apparent gunshot wound(s)," MDSO said. At the time of the investigation, CBS News Miami's crew was at the scene, where the victim's car appeared to have a bullet hole in the windshield. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the man to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where, despite all medical efforts, he died, MDSO said. A suspect — later revealed to be Aguila — was taken into custody without further incident after he was found behind a nearby McDonald's. According to arrest documents, the man shot was in a "romantic affair" with Aguila's wife since 2019. However, it wasn't until April 2024 that Aguila learned of his wife's affair and warned her to end it. On July 10, the affair partner arrived at Aguila's home to speak with his wife. At this time, Aguila confronted the man, who departed from the home shortly after, arrest documents said. Two days later, Aguila, his wife, and his son were at the flea market when the affair partner arrived in a gray Honda Civic and attempted to speak with Aguila's wife. Aguila was then alerted by his son about the interaction. Aguila then rode a mobility scooter toward the affair partner's car, got off and walked over to the passenger side window. According to arrest documents, a verbal altercation occurred through the front passenger window that lasted less than five seconds before Aguila pulled out a gun from his waistband and shot the other man multiple times. The affair partner drove a short distance before becoming unresponsive and stopping at its final resting place, where first responders found him. Investigators found surveillance video from the shooting location that confirmed the sequence of events. According to arrest documents, a Glock 26 9mm handgun was recovered from Aguila, along with two 9mm spent casings and another projectile were found inside the affair partner's car, while another two spent casings were found at the shooting location. After being read his Miranda rights, Aguila explained his side of the story to investigators and was released pending further investigation after they conferred with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, the arrest documents said. Two weeks later, Aguila was taken back into custody, booked into jail and charged Carrero contributed to this report.

Police close key Merseyside roads after multi-car crash
A number of cars were involved in a major crash on a Merseyside road. Police received reports of the multi-car pile-up at around 2.45pm today (Saturday). Merseyside Police said the crash happened at the junction of Woolfall Heath Avenue and Seth Powell Way in Stockbridge Village. Officers attended the scene and were forced to put road closures in place as investigations into what had happened were carried out. The force is now appealing for information from members of the public who may have witnessed the crash. A police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for information following a reported road traffic collision in Stockbridge Village this afternoon, Saturday 26 July. "At around 2.45pm we received a report that a number of cars were involved in a collision at the junction of Woolfall Heath Avenue and Seth Powell Way." They asked people to avoid the area for a period after the crash, while a road closure was in place. Images and footage shared with the ECHO showed a number of police vehicles in place at the junction where the crash happened. One of the vehicles in the footage is a mobile police station unit, formed out of a police van. Signs and cones can be seen in the area indicating a road closure. The police statement did not include details of whether anyone was injured.
