Day 2: Edu officers' mass leave protest affects administrative work

Time of India3 days ago
Nagpur: Class 1 and 2 education officers across Maharashtra, under the banner of the Akhil Maharashtra Rajya Shikshan Seva Rajpatrit Adhikari Sangh, continued their mass leave agitation on Monday.
This, technically, marked the second day of their statewide protest against what they term the "high-handedness" of police in the ongoing probe into the Shalarth ID scam.
The agitation began on Friday, but the intervening weekend holidays meant its impact was only felt in earnest as offices reopened. The association members will meet school education minister Dada Bhuse and the principal secretary in Mumbai on Tuesday.
According to association members, the protest is not against the investigation itself but against the manner in which it is being conducted. Officials allege that the probe is marked by arbitrary questioning, extended hours of interrogation, and sudden arrests, creating an atmosphere of fear within the department.
"Education officers at district, deputy, and block levels are all on leave. This is a collective stand to demand fairness and transparency in the process," said a senior association representative.
The group has sought a written assurance from the state govt that no officer will be harassed or detained without substantial evidence.
On Monday, the absence of these senior officers began affecting routine administrative functions but its strong impact was not yet felt. In some places, including Nagpur, charge is being handled by other officials, hence the impact was not visible so far. However, sources say as the days progress the impact will be visible because the files will start to pile up as the in-charge officials also have to cater to their primary job.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by Nagpur police is currently probing the scam, which involves alleged misuse and creation of fake Shalarth IDs for financial irregularities. It's the arrests made by this team which riled up education officers. The association claims its members are cooperating fully with the probe and are willing to provide all necessary documents and clarifications. However, they maintain that sudden arrests without "strong reasons" are unacceptable.

Shalarth ID scam mastermind held after 105 days on the run

1 2 Nagpur: Nilesh Baburao Waghmare, alleged mastermind of the fake Shalarth ID scam, who had been on the run for 105 days, was arrested by the Special Investigation Team on Thursday afternoon after laying a trap in Dhantoli. Police said they cut off his access to finances to nab him. The high court had recently rejected Waghmare's bail application. The scam occurred between 2019 and April 2025, when Waghmare was superintendent (primary) of the salary cell in the education department. During this time in Nagpur division, fake Shalarth IDs had been created for several teachers and non-teaching staff. Through this, the govt was defrauded of crores of rupees. The SIT has accused Waghmare of not verifying the authenticity of proposals for Shalarth IDs received from schools, and creating 680 fake IDs for teachers and non-teaching staff. Waghmare helped these persons withdraw regular and arrears salaries, defrauding the govt of crores of rupees. As soon as the scam came to light, a 7-member committee was established under the leadership of deputy director of education Ulhas Narad. The committee's investigation confirmed the fraud, and on March 12, Ravindra Patil, junior administrative officer of the divisional deputy director of education office, filed a complaint at Cyber police station against Waghmare and several others. As soon as the case was registered, Waghmare fled from Nagpur. He was later suspended also. However, even as Ulhas Narad, Parag Pudke and others were arrested for the scam, Waghmare remained elusive. Kothamangalam case: SIT may arraign accused's parents

Kochi: The special investigation team (SIT) probing the death of a 23-year-old woman, who alleged in her suicide note that her boyfriend compelled her to convert religion, is likely to include his family members as accused. A nine-member SIT, led by Muvattupuzha DSP, is investigating the case. Her boyfriend, Rameez, 24, was arrested on charges of sexual intercourse through deceitful means and abetment to suicide under BNS. "Our investigation now is focused on Rameez's parents as well as a friend of the accused, Sahad, named in the woman's suicide note. Whether more relatives were involved is also under probe. We are trying to confirm if they abetted the suicide in any way. A report to add them as accused will be filed after questioning them," said a senior officer, adding that efforts were on to trace the family members who were at large. The family has demanded a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA). They have sent letters to the chief minister and the state police chief demanding an NIA probe. The woman's mother has raised suspicion of her daughter becoming a victim of an attempted forceful conversion by the accused. The woman's mother has alleged that her daughter was locked up by the accused and his family in their house, where she was physically assaulted. Meanwhile, police maintain that prima facie there was no organized effort to forcefully convert her and that the demand to convert was made as part of marriage discussions between the families.
