Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey has dodged a request by the opposition to prove a 'radioactive' leak at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital wasn't as serious as reported. A special investigation by the West Australian this week uncovered the March 2023 incident among more than 1000 maintenance work orders reported at the facility over two and a half years. 'RADIATION LEAKAGE. Pipe blocked, leaking into corridor. Need plumber to unblock. Call Physicist to supervise. ' a staff member wrote in their maintenance request. Staff attended the incident, and a follow-up report was lodged: 'Radioactive waste pipe in the sub-basement has began (sic) leaking from the seal in 2 entrance values (valves). Radioactive water is dripping down onto the floor. ' Mr Carey strenuously denied the leak involved radioactive water and said his advice from the Department was that it was minor. It has since come to light that North Metro Health Service has no documented reports or assessment of the leak's impact on the hospital operations, patient care, or infrastructure from more than two years ago. Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas called for an explanation from the Health Infrastructure Minister in Parliament on Thursday. 'What are the major infrastructure issues on the risk register for Sir Charles Gardner Hospital, to assure the public that there was no radiation leak,' he asked. 'Will you table the work orders and follow up report related to this incident? 'And.. why are there no reports or assessments into the leaks which have reportedly sent human excrement through the intensive care unit, flooded buildings and damaged equipment?' Mr Carey didn't address the questions — instead he repeated the departmental advice. 'I must rely on the advice of the department,' he said. 'The incident that occurred on the 13th of March 2023, in the G block sub-basement was not a radioactive leak. It involved a non-hazardous water leak from a pipe which was repaired without further risk. 'I am advised that the leak was very minor and occurred in a sub-basement pipe. Last night in the parliament, I went into further detail. 'My understanding is a physicist in nuclear medicine attended the site before remediation works began.' When questioned by The West Australian, North Metropolitan Health Service didn't say how it was able to confirm what occurred in 2023 without any incident documentation. 'The leak was from a non-hazardous wastewater pipe in the sub-basement. The pipe did not contain radioactive material,' a NMHS spokesperson said. 'The assessment was conducted by a Physicist in Nuclear Medicine and Medical Technology and Physics area that it was general sewage and not radioactive. This was determined before being unblocked.' The Radiological Council is the statutory reporting authority for any incidents - it has received no reports from the health service.
