Kerry athletes excel at Munster combined events championship
Among the many highlights that were there to be savoured for Kerry was the success of the Gneeveguilla squad in a variety of events in the masters' championships and especially in the throws. In three events, various members of the club had a clean sweep of the medals on offer.
The women's W40 shot was dominated totally by Gneeveguilla. Gemma O'Connell, Michelle Murphy and Michelle Knee had the medal podium to themselves at the end of a hotly contested final.
In the men's masters M55 weight for distance final, Gneeveguilla did it again. Denis O'Donoghue, Fred O'Sullivan and Niall Ó Donnchú got gold, silver and bronze with excellent application.
The women did it again in the masters' W40 weight for distance…Michelle Knee, Gemma O'Connell and Marie Murphy owned the podium there again.
There were many other throws success for the club also. If it's throws you want to see, come to Gneeveguilla.
THERE is no doubt about the ability of Kieran Keane (Ríocht) in the shot business. The young lion from Lispole (who wakes at 6am some days to do his weights' session), putted the iron ball high and long in the U20 final in Templemore to claim another title, ahead of his All Ireland schools' appearance on this weekend.
On Saturday, as the showers fell with annoying rhythm, he putted 15.43m a PB for that U20 shot weight. It could be another Keane show in Tullamore where he will face-up the best in the Irish schools' boys' shot-putting community. His application is infectious and he has now attracted a huge following of throwers wherever he putts.
KERRY senior athletes had outstanding success over the weekend in a variety of events. Perhaps one of the most interesting was the tense battle in the 5,000m between Conor Kissane from Killarney Valley and Jamie Moloney of Nenagh Olympic.
The Tipp athlete did everything in his power to shake off Kissane mid-race, and it seemed for a while that his sheer power would open a gap, but the Killarney man stuck like a leech over the last three laps and fired on all cylinders in the last 100m overtake and to claim the gold in a time of 16:06.22 with the rain coming down.

THE juvenile pentathlons were a sight to behold. Each athlete took on five events and, as in the Olympics, accumulated points as they proceeded from one to the next. You saw them running hurdles to open their show, then they would stream over to the high jump, and the shot, and the long jump and then a distance race to finish off. Kerry were prominent in most of the age-groups from U11 to U16 and took gold in a number of the age-groups.
The Tralee Harriers pair of Aria Collins and Harriet O'Loghlen dominated the U13 girls' pentathlon amidst huge opposition from a large number of Munster clubs, but claimed the gold and silver respectively at the end of a hectic day.
Jack Sheehy of St Brendan's won gold in the U12 boys event and and Donnacha Quilter who copied that at U15 level.
One huge facet of those pentathlons is that the athletes mix more with opposing athletes better than in any other event and generate pals in the course of the day. The athlete also help themselves to become total athletes with the sampling of the different disciplines.
Overseas success
Jack O'Leary (Killarney Valley) came home third in the BMC Manchester senior 800m event in a time of 1:51.23 at the weekend, continuing his upward trajectory at this distance.
Sarah Leahy (Killarney Valley) had a season's best in the 100m in Brussels with a time of 11.65 seconds and was the lead runner on the Irish 4 x 100m relay team that won their race at that FAM event. The team clocked 44.23 seconds which puts them up in the top 7 Irish women's relay performances since 2019. The team was Leahy, Neville, Lavin and O'Leary.
All-Ireland Schools Athletics Championships
The big event this weekend in the All Ireland Schools Athletics Championships which begin in Tullamore on Friday and reach a climax all day Saturday. It will be worth a visit as Kerry will be strongly represented in these, the most prestigious athletics event of the year for the youth.

Man Utd boss Amorim 'being kept updated' about son of Ireland international
Ruben Amorim is keeping a close eye on Manchester United starlet JJ Gabriel, the 14-year-old son of former Ireland international Joe O'Cearuill. Gabriel made headlines in April when he became the youngest player ever to appear for United's U18 side - a remarkable achievement that underlines the high regard in which he is held at the club. His rapid rise through the academy ranks has fuelled talk that a senior breakthrough could be on the horizon if his development continues at the same pace. According to the Daily Mail, Amorim has shown particular interest in the young forward's progress, requesting regular updates from his staff. It's also understood the Portuguese coach studied footage of Gabriel during United's pre-season tour of the US this summer. Gabriel was spotted in the director's box at Old Trafford during Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, where he and his family were reportedly in conversation with director of recruitment Christopher Vivell and several members of the coaching staff. Clips of him in training have previously gone viral, with excited fans dubbing him 'Kid Messi'. He further underlined his potential in United's U18 league opener against Everton, winning the decisive penalty in a 1-0 victory. JJ Gabriel is one of Manchester United's hottest prospects (Image: jjnr10/INSTAGRAM) JJ is eligible to play for England, Ireland, Cyprus and Trinidad and Tobago. He was born and raised in the UK, but is eligible to play for other countries thanks to his Irish father, Cypriot mother and Trinidadian grandfather. O'Cearuill began his career at Arsenal but never made a senior appearance for the Gunners. He spent most of his playing days in the lower leagues, featuring for clubs such as Barnet, Forest Green Rovers, and Haringey Borough, and also had a spell in the League of Ireland with St Patrick's Athletic. Born to a Trinidadian father and an Irish mother, O'Cearuill received an international call-up from then-Ireland boss Steve Staunton in 2007. He played against Ecuador and Bolivia but was unable to secure a regular spot in the squad and was never called up again. Joe O'Cearuill, pictured here playing Brighton against West Ham, earned two caps for Ireland (Image: Getty Images) JJ will be hoping to leave a more lasting mark at international level. Unfortunately for Irish fans, though, that impact is likely to come in an England shirt. The teenager made his debut for England's U15 side in March, and while he remains eligible to switch allegiance, there is no certainty, or even indication, he will choose to do so. Several top European clubs are reportedly monitoring Gabriel's development, but Manchester United are doing all they can to keep him at Old Trafford. The club secured him on a two-year deal in June and could look to extend that contract further if he continues to impress Amorim.

GAA members call on Association to sever ties with sponsor over Israel links
A lobby group of GAA members representing pro-Palestine groupings have called on the Association to sever ties with Championship sponsor Allianz Ireland. The grouping have taken a stance against the Irish subsidiary of the German based global financial giant, in the wake of a report last month from UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese. Their campaign labelled 'Drop Allianz' was launched outside the Hogan Stand entrance at Croke Park on Wednesday. It features the groupings Gaels against Genocide, who met with GAA President Jarlath Burns in May 2024, Dubs For Palestine, Irish Sport for Palestine and Gaeil ar son Gaza. An open letter was handed in to the GAA calling on the Association to 'demonstrate its commitment to international humanitarian law and promptly cease its relationship with Allianz.' The letter is signed by more than 780 former and current county players and features some huge names from the world of GAA. These include Dr David Hickey, Neil McManus, Peter Canavan, Tómas Ó Sé, Joe Brolly, Shane McGuigan, Niall Cahalane, Terence 'Sambo' McNaughton, Danny Sutcliffe, Michael Darragh Macauley, Aoife Ní Chasáide, Jane Adams, Brendan Devenney and Sorcha Gormley. Allianz Ireland have sponsored the GAA's National Leagues in hurling and football for over 30 years and earlier this year signed a new five year deal, which is set to run until 2030. The Irish subsidiary of the international corporate giant recently signed a new three year deal as one of the GAA's six Championship sponsors, having completed an original three year agreement, which was signed in 2023. It is believed the Championship deal is worth in the region of €1 million per annum to the GAA. Allianz is one of three football Championship rights holders, with three more in hurling. The National Leagues, which covers both codes, deal is understood to be worth in the region of €800,000 per annum. Allianz are also a sponsor of the Camogie Association and primary schools body Cumann na mBunscol as well as Paralympics Ireland and the Olympic Federation of Ireland. They are currently running a campaign entitled 'Stop the Drop,' which they say is aimed at preventing children dropping out of sport. Colm O'Rourke speaking at Croke Park Albanese's report - entitled 'From economy of occupation to economy of genocide' - states that asset management firm, Pimco, owned by another part of the wider Allianz group are a major purchaser of Israeli treasury bonds." The report goes on to point out that the firm holds $7.3 billion in Israeli shares and bonds, with $1 billion purchased since the start of the conflict in Gaza. The report alleges that bonds purchased by a range of international finance companies have helped to prop up Israel's economy and fund their ongoing onslaught in Gaza. Michael Doherty of Gaels against Genocide said: 'As the largest sporting organisation in Ireland, the GAA must show leadership in this time of genocide. 'It cannot continue with a 'business as usual' approach. As a main sponsor of the GAA, Allianz presents itself as socially responsible and ethical.' The letter goes on to call on the GAA to implement a key recommendation of Albanese's report. This is that corporate entities must promptly cease all business activities and terminate relationships directly linked with, contributing to and causing human rights violations and international crimes against the Palestinian people. It is unclear how many Palestinians Israel have killed in Gaza such is the scale of the destruction, with reports ranging from 55,000 to 90,000. The UN estimates that almost 70percent of structures in Gaza, including hospitals and schools, have been damaged or destroyed with almost two million people displaced from their homes, some as many as 10 times. UN reports state that over 250 people have now died from starvation since Israel's blockade on food supplies began with a further 500 killed by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) sourcing food at food banks The latest phase of the conflict began after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which killed almost 1,200 Israelis. The Albanese report also points the finger at some of the world's largest banks, stating that they stepped in and boosted market confidence by underwriting international and domestic bonds. The GAA were contacted but declined to comment, while a spokesperson for Allianz said: 'Our long-standing partnership with the GAA is about supporting Irish sport and communities. "Allianz Ireland is part of a global group, and while the wider group operates internationally across insurance and investment, as a matter of principle we do not comment on individual customers or business matters. "What we can say is that all Allianz business decisions are guided by strict legal standards and world-leading ESG principles.' Allianz' own website states: 'We regard respect for human rights as a minimum standard for responsible business. 'Allianz is committed to supporting and respecting the protection of international rights ensuring that Allianz is not complicit in human rights abuses.'
