Pakistani man extradited to U.S. from Canada over plot to attack Jewish centre on October 7 anniversary

A Pakistani citizen living in Canada has been extradited to the U.S. to face charges for plotting an Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS)-inspired mass shooting at a Jewish centre in New York City around the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks, U.S. officials said.
Muhammad Shahzeb Khan (20), also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was extradited to the U.S. on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) in connection with an indictment filed in the Southern District of New York, the Department of Justice said in a press release.
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel said Mr. Khan allegedly tried to enter the U.S. to commit the attack and planned an ISIS-inspired mass shooting on October 7, 2024, around the first anniversary of the 2023 Hamas terrorist attack in Israel.
"Major news… earlier this afternoon, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, was extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism," Mr. Patel said in a post on X.

Mr. Khan is scheduled to make an initial appearance in court on Wednesday (June 10, 2025).
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton for the Southern District of New York said Mr. Khan planned to use automatic weapons to kill as many members of the Jewish community as possible, all in support of ISIS, the press release said.
In a communication with undercover law enforcement officers, Mr. Khan claimed that if the plan succeeded, it would be "the largest attack on U.S. soil since 9/11".
He was provisionally arrested in Canada in September last year based on a complaint filed in the Southern District of New York. According to the complaint, Mr. Khan tried to travel from Canada to New York to carry out the mass shooting at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn.
Around November 2023, Mr. Khan began posting on social media and communicating with others on an encrypted messaging application about his support for ISIS, distributing ISIS propaganda videos and literature, among other things. Subsequently, he began communicating with two undercover law enforcement officers and confirmed planning an attack along with a U.S.-based associate in an unnamed American city.
Mr. Khan said he had been actively attempting to create 'a real offline cell' of ISIS supporters to carry out a 'coordinated assault' in a U.S. city using Augmented Reality (AR)-style rifles to 'target Israeli Jewish chabads . . . scattered all around' the city. He also repeatedly instructed the undercover officers to obtain AR-style assault rifles, ammunition, and other materials to carry out the attacks, including 'some good hunting [knives] so we can slit their throats'. Mr. Khan identified the specific locations in the city where the attacks would take place and provided details about how he would cross the border from Canada into the U.S. for these.
During these conversations, he emphasised that 'Oct 7th and Oct 11th are the best days for targeting the Jews' because 'Oct 7 they will surely have some protests and Oct 11 is Yom Kippur', referring to Judaism's holiest day. He changed the target location to New York City around August 20 and decided to target the Jewish centre in Brooklyn.
He told the agents that New York is "perfect to target jews' as it has the 'largest Jewish population" in the US and said, 'Even if we don't attack a[n] Event[,] we could rack up easily a lot of jews.' Mr. Khan told the undercover officers that he planned to carry out this attack on or around October 7, 2024 — which he recognised as the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks in Israel by Hamas.
As part of his plan, Mr. Khan attempted to reach the U.S.-Canada border around September 4 by using three separate cars to travel across Canada towards the U.S.
Canadian authorities stopped him in or around Ormstown, approximately 12 miles from the border.
Mr. Khan is charged with one count of attempting to provide material support and resources to the ISIS terrorist organisation and one count of attempting to commit acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

2 Lakh Cyber Attacks On India's Power System During Op Sindoor: Minister

There have been two lakh cyber attacks on the power sector in India during 'Operation Sindoor'. In the first such confirmation of massive cyber attacks during India-Pakistan clashes, the government today said all the attacks were foiled and the power system is working perfectly. "Two lakh cyber attacks on the power system have taken place. All these attacks have been thwarted," said Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. He was addressing a press conference on the completion of 11 years of the BJP-led Central government. To a question by NDTV, the minister said that cyber attacks started after India launched 'Operation Sindoor' - in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack - and continued for 8 to 10 days. In Jammu and Kashmir, most of the official sites, including power, were targeted, and some are still struggling to be restored. The cyber attacks have affected public services and the official functioning of various departments. On May 7, India woke up to the news of "focused, measured and non-escalatory" strikes of the Armed Forces on the terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Nine terror launchpads were targeted within 25 minutes in the operation. The mission was named 'Operation Sindoor' - a codename to avenge the widows of the April 22 attack, wherein 26 civilians - all men - were killed in cold blood by terrorists linked to an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba. The precision terror strikes on terror launch pads were met with Pakistani aggression. The Pakistani military tried to target several cities in India using drones and other munitions, which were "repulsed" by the Indian forces. After four days of fighting, India and Pakistan reached an agreement to stop firing on May 10. Within hours, however, the deal was breached by Pakistan. It was responded to with a stern warning by the Armed Forces the next day: "India would retaliate fiercely to any violation in future".

‘See its record…': India on US general calling Pakistan a ‘phenomenal partner'

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday pushed back against a senior US general's characterisation of Pakistan as a 'phenomenal partner' in counter-terrorism by pointing to the Pakistani military's long-standing support for cross-border terrorism and the presence of terrorist leaders and groups in the neighbouring country. The US Central Command chief, General Michael Kurilla, created a flutter by saying during a hearing by the House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that the US needs to have a relationship with both India and Pakistan because of the Pakistani military's role in countering threats from the Islamic State-Khorasan Province or ISIS-Khorasan. When external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was asked about Kurilla's remarks at a weekly media briefing, he responded by highlighting the track record of Pakistan in the context of supporting cross-border terrorism and its links to terrorist individuals and groups, including slain al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden. Referring to comments made by interlocutors in the United States, Jaiswal said: 'See the record of Pakistan, of what Pakistan actually is, [it] is very clear. We all know the Pahalgam attack is only a recent example of cross-border terrorism. 'I would remind you that only recently, one of the conspirators of [the 2008 Mumbai attacks], Tahawwur Rana was extradited from the United States to India. Obviously, none of us have forgotten that Pakistan gave shelter to Osama bin Laden.' Bin Laden was killed in a raid by US special forces in May 2011 while sheltering in a compound located close to key military facilities in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad. Jaiswal said it was also significant that a Pakistani doctor, Shakil Afridi, who helped locate bin Laden, is 'still imprisoned by the Pakistani military'. Afridi played a key role in ascertaining bin Laden's presence in the compound in Abbottabad, located a stone's throw from the Pakistan Military Academy. Kurilla's remarks did not go down well in New Delhi because they came at a time when India has intensified its global efforts to highlight Pakistan's role as an epicentre of terrorism, as well as its backing for cross-border terrorism in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 that killed 26 civilians. During his testimony before the House Armed Services Committee, Kurilla, who is set to retire this summer, highlighted the role of the Pakistani military and army chief Asim Munir in combating ISIS-Khorasan. 'That's why we need…to have a relationship with Pakistan and with India. I do not believe it is a binary switch that we can't have one with Pakistan if we have a relationship with India,' Kurilla said.

Work on at synagogue despite notice: Plaint to civic chief

Mumbai: The standoff over "illegal repair work" at the Magen David Jewish synagogue in Byculla continues despite the stop work notice issued by BMC. Complainant Moshe Shek who has been pursuing the alleged illegal restoration of the heritage structure met BMC chief Bhushan Gagrani on Thursday. Shek, himself a Jew, revisited the synagogue on June 6 and found that labourers were continuing "heavy repair work" behind closed doors despite lack of requisite permissions. Police were called to the site. Synagogue trust chairperson Solomon Sopher said no violations were being committed and that everything was in consonance with the law. "Propping work is on to safeguard schoolchildren who are only about 50ft away. No additional repair work is undertaken until the necessary permission is obtained." Arun Chavan, designated officer from BMC's E ward, said the trust has appointed an architect and a structural consultant. "We have been informed that scaffolding made of mild steel has been erected to support the ceiling. As approvals can take time, it is necessary to have temporary support to ensure the ceiling does not collapse." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025: Steel Suppliers From Mexico At Lowest Prices (Take A Look) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo He said the architect confirmed that the ceiling is wooden and requires support to avoid any structural failure. "We shared photos of the structure and the scaffolding with the complainant, but he remained unconvinced." Shek told TOI, "Community members informed me that a lot of civil work was happening behind closed doors even after the notice was issued. I called BMC, which denied any such work taking place. On June 6, my team shot videos of labourers with gas cutting machines, welding irons all working... I met the building and factories officer on June 11, seeking the permission letters granted. Thereafter, I met Gagrani, who promised to monitor the matter. I also approached the civic heritage department." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
