Eddy Merckx hospitalised for hip surgery after cycling complications

BRUSSELS: Belgian cycling icon Eddy Merckx has been admitted to hospital for a follow-up hip operation after complications arose from a previous surgery.
The 80-year-old, widely regarded as the greatest cyclist of all time, fractured his hip in a biking accident last December.
Initially, a titanium prosthesis was implanted, but it was later replaced with a cemented version. However, new issues emerged, necessitating further medical intervention. Merckx is expected to remain hospitalised for approximately two weeks.
The five-time Tour de France champion has faced multiple health setbacks in recent years. In 2019, a severe fall left him hospitalised for several days.
Despite these challenges, his legacy in cycling remains unmatched, with victories in the Giro d'Italia, Vuelta a España, and numerous one-day classics. - AFP

Cycling-Young Scot Onley surprises with top finishes in Tour de France

FILE PHOTO: Cycling - Tour de France - Stage 5 - Caen to Caen - Caen, France - July 9, 2025 Team Picnic PostNL's Oscar Onley in action during the stage 5 time trial REUTERS/Benoit Tessier/File Photo TOULOUSE, France (Reuters) -Scotland's Oscar Onley has impressed during the first week of the Tour de France, sitting seventh overall after 10 stages at just 22 years old. The Kelso-born rider delivered standout performances as he claimed third and fourth, in stage seven and four respectively, on the wheels of defending champion Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and two-time Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike). "Mur-de-Bretagne (on stage seven) was really circled as a stage that could suit me but you also have to be realistic that Pogacar, in these kinds of finishes, is in a different league," Onley told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday. "I'm just enjoying what I'm doing and to be able to be up there with Pogacar and Vingegaard is an honour." The Picnic PostNL rider also secured sixth place in stage two, adding to an already impressive tally of three top-10 finishes in his second appearance at cycling's most prestigious race. "I was hoping to get a good result, but a good result was maybe a top 10, top five from the bunch. But now I've kind of shown that I'm a little bit higher up and I can set my goals a little bit higher," he said. Onley, who won a stage at last month's Tour de Suisse and claimed third overall, has shown consistency in World Tour one-week races this year. However, his main aim remains a stage win on the Tour de France. "I think it's still the main goal. There are going to be a lot more opportunities coming up in the next couple of weeks. I just have to take those opportunities when they come," he said. "I didn't come here with any ambitions for the GC (general classification). If there's an opportunity to slide in the breakaway one day, then I'll try and take it." The British rider is one minute and 18 seconds behind Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) who currently sits fifth. "I think a top five would be something really special, but I don't know if that's really possible," he said, adding that the experience is bolstering his confidence as a potential Grand Tour contender. "I think that's the goal in the next couple of years. And now I'm starting to realize that maybe it's a little bit more possible than I thought." The first high mountain stage in the Pyrenees on Thursday shouldgive some insight into Onley's strength in longer climbs. (Reporting by Vincent DaheronEditing by Christian Radnedge)

(Wikimedia Commons pic) SINGAPORE: The women's 10km open water race at the world swimming championships in Singapore has been postponed because of poor water quality, governing body World Aquatics said today. A review of the course at Sentosa Island found water quality levels 'exceeding acceptable thresholds', with organisers making the decision to postpone 'in the utmost interest of athlete safety'. Advertisement The women's 10km race was set to take place this morning but has been pushed back to Wednesday, when the men's event will also be held. 'World Aquatics regrets the inconvenience caused by the postponement and acknowledges the commitment and preparation of all athletes, coaches and teams,' World Aquatics said in a statement. 'The health and safety of participants remain the highest priority in all competition-related decisions.' World Athletics said tests had 'consistently' shown the water quality to be acceptable but that a sample taken on Sunday went over the limit. Pool swimming events at the world championships begin on July 27. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? World's oldest marathon runner dies aged 114 in road accident

NEW DELHI, India (AFP): India's Fauja Singh, believed to be the world's oldest distance runner, has died in a road accident aged 114, his biographer said on Tuesday (July 15). Singh, an Indian-born British national, nicknamed the "Turbaned Tornado", died after being hit by a vehicle in Punjab state's Jalandhar district on Monday. "My Turbaned Tornado is no more," Fauja's biographer Khushwant Singh wrote on X. "He was struck by an unidentified vehicle... in his village, Bias, while crossing the road. Rest in peace, my dear Fauja." Singh did not have a birth certificate but his family said he was born on April 1, 1911. He ran full 42km marathons till the age of 100. His last race was a 10km event at the 2013 Hong Kong Marathon when 101, where he finished in one hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds. He became an international sensation after taking up distance running at the ripe old age of 89, after the death of his wife and one of his sons, inspired by seeing marathons on television. Although widely regarded as the world's oldest marathon runner, he was not certified by Guinness World Records as he could not prove his age, saying that birth certificates did not exist when he was born under British colonial rule in 2011. Singh was a torchbearer for the Olympics at Athens 2004 and London 2012, and appeared in advertisements with sports stars such as David Beckham and Muhammad Ali. His strength and vitality were credited to a routine of farm walks and a diet including Indian sweet "laddu" packed with dry fruits and home-churned curd. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on social media. "Fauja Singh was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness," said Modi on X "He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world." – AFP Fauja Singh ji, 114 years old, a living example of determination and spirit. At 93, he ran a full marathon ,defeating every odd life threw at him. A man who never gave up, yet lost to a tragic road accident. Rest in peace legend.
