GOF foils RM462,000 rice smuggling operation in Kelantan
GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the trailer was intercepted around 7.30am during 'Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan', after officers observed suspicious activity.
'A check of the vehicle uncovered a large load of white rice believed to have been smuggled from Thailand for distribution on the local market,' he said in a statement today.
The trailer's driver and his assistant, both locals, were detained and are suspected of acting as couriers in the smuggling operation.
The case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994 and the seized goods have been handed over to the Kelantan National Padi and Rice Central Storage facility.

36 Myanmar illegal immigrants arrested in Rantau Panjang
PASIR MAS: A team from the 8th Battalion of the General Operations Force arrested thirty six illegal immigrants from Myanmar travelling in a chartered bus this morning. The operation occurred in Kampung Serongga near Rantau Panjang following a tip-off received at midnight. Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid confirmed the details to reporters. The bus was intercepted at 6.30am during a routine inspection. All thirty six passengers aged between twenty and forty were detained along with the thirty seven year old local driver who also owns the vehicle. 'Out of the 36, four held passports without valid entry stamps, one had an expired passport, and 31 had no identification documents,' he stated. Nik Ros Azhan revealed the immigrants were collected from a factory in Meru, Klang. They were being transported to Rantau Panjang under the false pretense of going to a non-existent rice mill. A payment of RM2,300 for the bus service was reportedly made by the employer via a cashless transaction. Two women were among those arrested in the operation. The suspects are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63. The local driver faces charges under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. He is suspected of being involved in human trafficking activities. 'All detainees have been taken to the Pasir Mas District Police Headquarters for further investigation,' added Nik Ros Azhan. 2 Immigration officers nabbed for taking RM400,000 in bribes
KUANTAN: Two Immigration Department officers have been remanded for allegedly accepting RM400,000 in bribes to allow foreigners arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to enter the country without going through proper procedures. Magistrate Wahidah Zainal Abidin granted a seven-day remand order until Aug 26 after reviewing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) application at the magistrate's court here today. Sources said the men — both in their 40s — were arrested simultaneously in Nilai, Negri Sembilan and Johor Baru on Monday. The arrests were part of a large-scale MACC operation to cripple the "counter setting" syndicate at KLIA1 and KLIA2. "The suspects are believed to have pocketed hundreds of thousands of ringgit in bribes in exchange for releasing groups of foreigners without following immigration protocols. "They allegedly committed the offence between 2022 and last year. Following their arrest, MACC also seized cash and froze several bank accounts belonging to them," the source said. Pahang MACC director Mohd Shukor Mahmud, when contacted, confirmed the arrests, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

Sarawak Customs seizes RM11.88 million in contraband cigarettes
KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department Sarawak branch has seized undeclared cigarettes with a total value estimated at RM11,880,000. This figure includes both the goods' value and the tax evaded. The raid occurred at a warehouse in Demak Industrial Park last month. Director Norizan Yahya confirmed the operation's details. A team from the Land Operations Unit and the headquarters' intelligence branch conducted the raid on July 29 at about 4 pm. They also arrested a man in his 50s believed to be the warehouse manager. 'An inspection revealed various brands of cigarettes believed to have been brought in from Indonesia as prohibited goods stored in the premises,' he stated. 'The seizure was estimated at RM3.6 million while total duty and tax was RM8.28 million, making the total seizure worth RM11.88 million,' he said at a press conference. He clarified the legal status of the goods. Cigarettes are categorised as prohibited goods under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023. Their importation requires a specific permit. He detailed the syndicate's method of operation. Their modus operandi was to conceal contraband in premises storing licenced goods. The prohibited goods were then transported elsewhere for distribution. The investigation is being conducted under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. This section pertains to concealing uncustomed goods. If convicted, offenders face a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both penalties. - Bernama
