QS ranks KL as world's 12th best city for students, highest since index began
This is the city's highest-ever ranking since the index was introduced in 2014, and marks the first time KL has broken into the top 20 cities.
With an overall score of 90.3, KL is the second-highest Southeast Asian city on the list, just one spot below Singapore, which is ranked 11th.
In Asia, KL emerged in fourth place, overtaking major cities such as Beijing (13th), Taipei (14th) and Hong Kong (17th).
'This continuous ascent, having improved almost each year since 2016, underscores the city's dedicated efforts to establish itself as a premier global study destination,' QS chief executive officer Jessica Turner said in a statement yesterday.
QS ranks cities with a population of at least 250,000 and with at least two universities featured in the QS World University Rankings.
The survey, conducted among prospective and former students, comprises six broad categories: desirability, affordability, student mix, employer activity, university rankings, and student voice.
KL's weakest performance was in the Desirability metric, although it climbed eight spots from the previous edition to 81st in the latest rankings.
The city also dropped nine spots year-on-year in the Affordability metric and fell two spots year-on-year in the Student Voice metric.
While KL shows an upward trend, Selangor's capital city Shah Alam tumbled 21 spots to 144th after recording a decline across five of the six metrics.
Globally, South Korea's capital Seoul wrested the top spot from London as the world's best student city, while Japan's capital Tokyo came second.
London, which retained the number-one position for six consecutive years, finished third — largely due to slipping 11 places in the Affordability indicator.

The four suspects being brought to the Putrajaya magistrates' court for a remand hearing today. PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has remanded a manager from a construction company, along with his wife and two company directors, over suspected corruption involving procurement tenders for the construction of a RM180 million data centre in Johor. All the suspects were arrested in an operation carried out by MACC in the Klang Valley yesterday, during which the agency seized about RM7.5 million in cash from the home of the manager. 'The money is believed to be from bribes paid to the manager in exchange for securing six project procurement tenders,' said a source. The source said the manager is believed to have asked for a 2.5% commission for each procurement tender obtained by the two companies involved. Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin granted a seven-day remand order until July 24 for the manager, while his wife will be remanded for three days until July 21. The two company directors will be remanded for five days until July 22 following MACC's remand application at the Putrajaya magistrates' court this morning. MACC deputy chief commissioner Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the arrests of the suspects, aged between 40 and 60.

Penang students can now apply for Ancom Crop Care's RM10,000 scholarship
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — Ancom Crop Care's scholarship programme for Penang-born students is now open for its final cycle, with applications accepted from July 18 to October 14, 2025. The scholarship, worth up to RM10,000 per student for tuition fees, is aimed at students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds in Penang. It is open to those who have secured admission to any local government or private university — excluding Medicine and Dentistry — as well as those who have applied and are still awaiting offer letters. Students currently in their second, third or final year of undergraduate study may also apply. Launched in May 2023 by Ancom Crop Care Sdn Bhd — a subsidiary of Bursa Malaysia-listed Ancom Nylex Berhad — the scholarship was officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. This year marks the third and final round of applications under the programme. Malaysia set to be halal hub for NZ products
WELLINGTON: Malaysia is poised to be a hub for halal products from New Zealand to enter the Asean market, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said this comes after two organisations in New Zealand, which have obtained recognition from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), expressed interest in using Malaysia as a springboard to widen their export market. 'I have given them the opportunity to use Malaysia as a hub for the distribution of halal products from New Zealand to Asean nations,' he said after attending the Malaysia-New Zealand Halal Forum here yesterday. Ahmad Zahid said he had also proposed to halal industry players from New Zealand to attend the Malaysia International Halal Showcase 2025, which will be held in September in Kuala Lumpur. 'An announcement will be made during the event on joint efforts to set up the Asean Halal Council, comprising representation from Asean and Asean Plus. 'We invited the bodies that have obtained Jakim recognition to be part of the council,' he added. Ahmad Zahid said the goal of the council is to standardise halal certification among Asean nations as well as those in the surrounding region. 'This will be brought up as an agenda during the Asean Summit this October,' he added. Ahmad Zahid also said there is talk among several countries under the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to reactivate the dormant World Halal Council to include both Muslim and non-Muslim majority nations involved in halal products. He said this is crucial as the global halal market is expected to grow from the current US$1.3 trillion (RM5.5 trillion) annually to US$3.7 trillion (RM14.3 trillion) in 2030. 'The market is expected to grow to US$5 trillion (RM21.2 trillion) by 2050. 'Malaysia intends to tap 5% of this market,' he added. During the forum earlier, New Zealand's Biosecurity and Food Safety Minister Andrew Hoggard said Malaysia is a significant market for premium halal meat products, with exports of more than NZ$60mil (RM151mil). 'Malaysia is facilitating the approval of several New Zealand halal meat premises seeking first-time access to this market, which is crucial to growing exports,' he said. Earlier, Ahmad Zahid and Hoggard witnessed the exchange of letters of intent between Universiti Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the University of Canterbury. The partnership aims to strengthen academic and research collaboration, including student and staff mobility.
