NASCAR adds an optional caution flag in latest effort to make its All-Star Race interesting

Yahoo23-04-2025

Another year, another attempt to spice up the NASCAR All-Star Race.
NASCAR announced the format for the 2025 edition of the race on Wednesday and this year's iteration includes an optional caution flag that can be thrown before lap 220 of the 250-lap race.

The caution is a 'promoter's caution' and 'will be in the mix to reshape the race's complexion' according to the release on NASCAR's website. The caution has to be thrown before lap 220, but can't be thrown after lap 200 if a caution for a wreck or debris happens after that lap.
Simply put, the optional caution has been added in an attempt to save what could be a boring race. The May 18 race is at the 0.625-mile North Wilkesboro Speedway. The quality of short track racing in the Cup Series has declined precipitously since the current car was introduced in 2022 because of its low horsepower and higher downforce characteristics.
With a high likelihood of a boring race with difficult passing, the caution could be used to bunch the field in the hopes of an exciting late restart.
'The NASCAR All-Star Race continues to evolve as one of the most fun and innovative events on our calendar,' NASCAR vice president John Probst said in a statement. 'Returning to historic North Wilkesboro Speedway for the third year in a row allows us to honor our sport's roots while pushing the envelope with fresh competitive elements. The introduction of the Manufacturer Showdown brings a new layer of intensity and pride for our OEM partners, and fans can expect even more strategy, teamwork and drama on race day.'
That manufacturer showdown will include an equal number of Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota teams. The automaker with the lowest total finish among its cars will win the competition.

The optional caution is the latest gimmick among many in recent All-Star Race history. Previous All-Star races have featured option tires and final restart orders calculated based on a driver's average finish in the earlier stages. The continued attempts to make the All-Star Race relevant underscore that the race might have outlived its usefulness and that NASCAR could be better served with an off weekend for its teams instead of a race featuring participants who race each other in 36 points events per season.
The 250-lap race is also 50 laps longer than the 2024 race was. Drivers who won a race in 2024 or 2025, have won an All-Star Race before or who have won a Cup Series title before are automatically entered into the event. The drivers who don't fit that criteria will race each other in a 100-lap qualifying race earlier in the day. The top two finishers from that race will qualify for the main event along with the driver who received the most votes from fans to compete in the All-Star Race.

Victor Wembanyama shaves head as he takes retreat at China's Shaolin Temple

Victor Wembanyama is tapping into his inner monk. As part of an offseason excursion to China, the 7-foot-4 Spurs center is taking part in a 10-day retreat at the 1,500-year-old Shaolin Temple. Photos of Wembanyama, 21, with a newly shaved head circulated on social media this week, and the NBA's China office confirmed that the Frenchman is at the Buddhist temple. Advertisement According to Spurs reporter Dusty Garza, Wemby is undergoing a 'journey of inner discipline, focus and mind-body harmony.' Wembanyama is readying for his third NBA season after he was diagnosed with season-ending blood clots in his right shoulder in February. Advertisement He enjoyed a terrific sophomore season until that point, earning an All-Star nod by averaging 24.3 points and 11 rebounds per game. But besides his dazzling play on the court, Wembanyama has endeared himself to fans through his quirky and sometimes nerdy persona. The 21-year-old is a proud bookworm — a fan of science fiction, to be specific — and he's also a chess lover who played with fans at Washington Square Park after San Antonio took on the Knicks and Nets in late December. But the foray into Buddhist monkhood is certainly Wembanyama's most notable off-court endeavor yet. Advertisement Spurs center Victor Wembanyama in a game against the Knicks on Dec. 25, 2024. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Fans on social media had varying reactions to the news. 'This is the separation right here,' said one user on X. 'MVP otw.' 'We need to start calling him Zenbanyama,' wrote another. Advertisement Spurs center Victor Wembanyama chats with coach Gregg Popovich during a game on Dec. 13, 2023. AP Others were more skeptical about how useful the retreat would truly be, and a few couldn't help but make cracks about Aaron Rodgers, who took a four-day darkness retreat in 2023. 'Y'all hated when Aaron Rodgers did this,' said one user, with another posting: 'Is he turning into Aaron Rodgers?' The Spurs have yet to make a playoff appearance since drafting Wembanyama, but the franchise appears to be trending toward contention after making a deal for star point guard De'Aaron Fox at the trade deadline. When San Antonio does crack into the postseason, perhaps Wembanyama's newfound spiritual awakening will prove helpful.

Red Sox fill-in first baseman hitting .304 after choosing Boston over Yankees as free agent

BOSTON — The Red Sox' signing of veteran infielder Abraham Toro on January 28 wasn't met with much fanfare. Fans had their sights set on much bigger-name infielders like Nolan Arenado and Alex Bregman during that antsy point of the winter, anyway, and Toro looked like little more than Triple-A depth in what was already a crowded infield mix. Five months later, though, Toro has been a rare bright spot for an underperforming Red Sox team. After not being seriously considered for the Opening Day roster and beginning the year in Triple-A, the 28-year-old has done his best Dom Smith impression in the wake of Triston Casas' season-ending knee injury and given the Red Sox a little something since being called up on May 3. Advertisement Toro hasn't turned around the season or thrust himself into the All-Star conversation. But while making 14 starts at first base and two more at third since Alex Bregman went down with a quad injury, he has hit .304 (21-for-69) with three homers, four doubles and an .803 OPS. He was even thrust into the cleanup spot Sunday in Atlanta and hit fifth Tuesday against the Angels. For a Red Sox lineup that strikes out way too much and has trouble with runners in scoring position, Toro has, out of nowhere, provided a little spark. He has walked just once (on Tuesday, in fact) but only has 11 strikeouts, too. With runners in scoring position, he's 5-for-14 (.357) with four RBIs. 'It's the quality of the at-bat,' said manager Alex Cora. 'It's not a quick one. He's looking for pitches. When he strikes out, it's not a non-competitive at-bat. He knows the situations. 'He plays the game. He understands what he needs to do. He's been in this situation before and he has been a positive influence for the group.' Advertisement Toro came up in the Astros organization and was a bench player on the Bregman-led contenders of the late 2010s. He even got a late-game at-bat in Game 3 of the 2020 ALCS. Since, he has bounced around to the Mariners, Brewers, Athletics and now the Red Sox. Playing on the 107-win Astros in 2019 and 90-win Mariners in 2021 and 2022 and 92-win Brewers (sparingly) in 2023 taught him what it means to win. 'I've been on a couple playoff teams with Houston and Seattle. Being in that environment helps you to be ready for any kind of pressure,' Toro said. This winter, after posting a .643 OPS in 94 games with Oakland last year and spending part of the season in the minors, Toro found himself with a limited market. Limited so much so, he said, that his only options were two sides of baseball's most storied rivalry: the Red Sox and Yankees. 'Not my top two choices,' he said laughing. 'Those were the only two offers I had.' Advertisement 'The fact they were the only teams, and it's the biggest rivalry in baseball, it was funny.' For players looking for non-roster invites to spring training, opportunity is usually the deciding factor. Toro, who had primarily played second and third base throughout his career, Boston represented an interesting fit. At the time, before the signing of Bregman, Rafael Devers was expected to be Boston's starter at third but there wasn't much depth behind him. Second base was an open question with Kristian Campbell, David Hamilton and Vaughn Grissom in the pre-spring mix before Campbell won the position battle and debuted on Opening Day. Toro's chance has come largely at first base, a spot where he had only played 90 innings before this season. He signed with the Red Sox, though, because of their manager's reputation for mixing and matching and finding ways to get bench players involved in creative ways. 'For me, a lot of it was Cora because I've seen him over the years,' said Toro, who was an Astros minor leaguer during Cora's lone season as Houston's bench coach in 2017. 'He's a guy that uses everybody on the team. A guy like me, maybe being a bench guy, it was something that was pretty attractive.' Advertisement Toro joined the big league roster in a first-base timeshare with Gonzalez, then Sogard after Gonzalez went down with a quad injury of his own. Sogard emerged as the top option for about a two weeks, starting nine of 12 games at first from May 10-23. Since, however, with the offense scuffling, it has been Toro with a heavy workload. He has started nine of 10 games since May 24. 'It's being ready no matter what,' Toro said. 'At first, if I was playing or not playing, my preparation was good. It's something I've learned over time, being more mature and taking it one at-bat at a time. 'The adjustment I've made is just learning the situation at the plate. The situation will dictate what you need to do. For me, if no one's on, it's get on. If there's a guy on second, how do I bring him in? It's that simple.' On Friday night in the Bronx, Toro will get his first chance to play in a game between two rivals who briefly competed for his services. Advertisement 'Very excited,' he said. 'I've heard a lot about it. Can't wait.' More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.
