Egg consumption drops in Ballari schools during Shravana month

Time of India2 days ago
Ballari: In govt schools in the Ballari district, there was a 20% reduction in the free distribution of eggs during the sacred month of Shravana, as many students opted for bananas instead.
The practice of avoiding non-vegetarian food items such as eggs, fish, and meat during Shravana is increasingly evident in educational institutions.
Kasturi, the district officer of the Midday Meals Scheme, stated, "This trend shows growth each year. In aided schools and anganwadi centres, a considerable number of children and women express a preference for vegetarian food over eggs during this month."
"We adjust the menu according to their preferences.
However, in certain areas, parents are opposing the distribution of eggs during the Shravana month. We are not pressuring anyone. Instead, we are providing bananas as a substitute for eggs," she explains.
The Ballari district comprises 228 govt and one aided primary school, 402 govt and 41 aided higher primary schools, and 90 govt and 34 aided high schools across five taluks. Among these, 1.5 lakh children from classes 1 to 10 receive midday meals.

As per the department's estimates, 20% of children have transitioned from eggs to bananas.
Ramakrishna Nayak M, deputy director of the women and child development department, stated, "There are 1.3 lakh beneficiaries, including pregnant women, new mothers, and children aged 0 to 6, under the jurisdiction of 1,358 anganwadi centres. Here as well, since some stopped consumption of eggs, we are supplying them with nutritious vegetarian options, including green gram." As there is no enforcement of dietary changes, no complaints are reported.

City markets soak in patriotic fervours; people flock to stalls to buy tricolour flags, wristbands

Patna: City markets were abuzz with patriotic fervour on the eve of the 79th Independence Day celebrations. People, including enthusiastic schoolchildren to spirited senior citizens, flocked stalls to buy tricolour-themed merchandise—flags, wristbands, and more on Thursday. This year, many stalls were seen selling flags made of cloth, reflecting a conscious move away from plastic. Mohammed Saquib (62), who has been setting up his Independence Day stall outside Patna Women's College for the past 22 years, said, "We offer flags priced between Rs10 and Rs 300, depending on the size. Plastic flags are no longer in demand—many people now prefer cloth ones. Paper flags tear easily and don't hold up in water, so we've stopped selling those too." On Bailey Road, retired Major Ajay Kumar, a Kargil War veteran from Begusarai, was spotted fixing a tricolour to his bike. "I make it a point to buy a flag every year," he said. "It's my way of honouring the nation. For army personnel, the flag holds deep emotional significance." Nitish Kumar, a shopkeeper on Boring Road, has brought this year a new merchandise—a satin ribbon priced at Rs10. "It's designed to be tied to car door handles or worn on the wrist," he explained. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now The ribbon features stripes of saffron, white, green, and blue, with 'Mera Bharat Mahaan' printed in Hindi. Young patriots Adit and Govinda, both eight years old and students of Class IV, were seen buying tricolour bangles for their five-year-old sister. Enthralled by the festive spirit, they also picked up face masks in the national colours to wear during their school's flag hoisting ceremony. Mohammed Jahangir, who runs a temporary stall near Carmel High School, said that wristbands are especially popular among children preparing for school functions. "I source all my stock from Delhi," he said. "But this year, business is slow. The frequent rains have kept customers away and damaged some of my boxed goods." After final counselling, 24 seats still vacant at govt residential school

Ludhiana: Even after the fourth and final round of counselling, twenty-four seats remain vacant at the Senior Secondary Residential School for Meritorious Students here. It is a state-run fully residential institution known for its strong academic results and free, high-quality education for bright students from underprivileged backgrounds. Its Ludhiana campus is one of 10 such schools set up across Punjab. The last counselling session was held on Aug 4, when the school still had 120 seats vacant. Of these, 96 seats were filled. However, 24 admitted students comprising 15 boys and nine girls, have not reported to the campus, leaving their seats unclaimed. According to official figures, the school has a total of 500 seats — 300 in the non-medical stream, 100 each in medical, and commerce. After the fourth counselling, vacancies remain in 16 non-medical, six medical, and two commerce seats. Principal Satwant Kaur cited counselling sessions spread over a long period and reluctance of students and their families to adapt to hostel life as some of the factors behind seats remaining vacant. She said, "Many of our students come from rural backgrounds and have never stayed away from their families. They are not used to living away from home and can't stay in a hostel, as they are still young, even if they have qualified for admission. " She added, "Another big reason for the unfilled vacancies is the protracted counselling. Counselling sessions extend over a long period. As a result, many students who have already taken provisional admissions in other schools don't tend to leave their schools as provisional classes for Class XI begin in April." tnn Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
