AP PHOTOS: Boca Juniors and River Plate fans taking their passion to the FIFA Club World Cup
They are Argentina's most popular clubs and fierce rivals. Thousands of their fans are expected to travel to the U.S. for the month-long FIFA Club World Cup that starts Saturday, hoping to recreate the electric atmosphere of Buenos Aires' iconic stadiums, La Bombonera and El Monumental.
From club-crest tattoos and towering banners to chants pledging eternal loyalty or mocking their rivals, these supporters live for their teams. Hardcore groups known as 'barra bravas' lead the noise with drums and trumpets, though some members won't make the trip due to stadium bans or legal troubles.

Basketball at 2028 LA Olympics will start 2 days before opening ceremony, FIBA says
MIES, Switzerland (AP) — Basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will start two days before the opening ceremony for those Games, organizers confirmed Wednesday. FIBA, the sport's global governing body, said that it has reviewed a revised basketball schedule for Los Angeles and that games will begin on July 12, 2028 — ahead of the July 14 opening ceremony. It is unclear if the men's tournament, the women's tournament or both will start before the official opening. A preliminary schedule released last month calls for three basketball games on July 12 and three more on July 13. 'This adjustment allows the quarterfinals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than (noon), enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters,' FIBA said in a news release. Bronze-medal games will be played on July 28 and 29, and gold-medal games will occur on July 29 and 30. July 30 is the final day of the Games. Several other sports also are scheduled to start before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket and soccer. The canoe slalom competition in Oklahoma City is expected to start in the morning of July 14, hours before the opening ceremony later that day about 1,200 miles (1,931 km) away. The U.S. is the defending men's and women's Olympic basketball champion. The women have won eight consecutive golds, while the men have won five straight. ___ AP Olympics:

Julián Alvarez's entourage believe he ‘made a mistake' joining Atlético Madrid
Something of a bombshell update on the situation surrounding Atlético Madrid star Julián Alvarez at present has come to the fore on Wednesday. This comes amid claims that those closest to the Argentine international are of the opinion that he made the wrong call in penning terms at the Metropolitano. Frontman Alvarez of course made the move to Atlético in the summer of 2024, after the Rojiblancos agreed to meet the hefty valuation laid out by Manchester City for their attacking star. The 25-year-old went on to enjoy an impressive debut campaign in Rojiblancos colours, to the tune of 29 goals and eight assists across all competitions. Atlético, however, endured a largely underwhelming season as a collective. And with Diego Simeone's troops fresh off an opening day La Liga defeat this past weekend, too, it would appear that cracks are beginning to appear behind the scenes in Alvarez's representative group. As per a report from journalist Matias Palacios, speaking during an appearance on El Chiringuito TV: 'Julián Alvarez's entourage believes he made a mistake by signing with Cholo's team.' Did Noni Madueke's Club World Cup medal end up in the White House? Everything you need to know
Chelsea fans are buzzing over a quirky theory that Noni Madueke's missing FIFA Club World Cup winner's medal might be sitting in the White House. The speculation started after U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a high-profile Ukraine peace meeting this week. While the summit focused on serious diplomatic discussions, football fans noticed something unusual behind the Resolute Desk, the FIFA Club World Cup trophy on display. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The White House (@whitehouse) Chelsea's Triumph in the Club World Cup Chelsea lifted the FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S. last month after beating PSG 3-0 in a memorable final. Trump later revealed that Chelsea had received a replica trophy, with the original trophy placed in the Oval Office. However, it wasn't just the trophy that caught fans' attention. Many believe a winner's medal was visible next to it — sparking rumours that it might belong to Noni Madueke. The Madueke Medal Theory During the trophy presentation, FIFA President Gianni Infantino handed Trump a medal after the Chelsea squad had been recognised. Footage from the event shows Trump pocketing the medal before leaving the stage. At the time, supporters speculated the medal may have belonged to Madueke, who was part of Chelsea's squad but flew home mid-tournament to finalize his £52 million move to Arsenal. As a result, he missed the medal ceremony entirely. Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella even fueled the rumor, joking: 'He [Trump] put it in his pocket. He has it there in the White House, very well placed.' The Truth Behind the Rumour With images circulating of what appears to be a medal sitting beside the Club World Cup trophy in the Oval Office, supporters have connected the dots and concluded it must be Madueke's. However, Daily Mail Sport recently reported that the winger was due to receive his official Club World Cup winner's medal by mail, casting doubt on the fan-driven theory.
