Murdered and dumped: Remains of missing Pretoria journalist and partner identified
Pretoria Rekord reports that the National Press Club (NPC) said in a statement that the couple's remains were discovered yesterday morning at an advanced stage of decomposition.
'The forensic team have positively identified the remains and confirmed that Ndlovu and Mdhluli were murdered and dumped in a veld in the Kwa Mhlanga area.'
The couple had been missing since February 18.
The NPC said the media fraternity across South Africa has, for the past two-and-a-half months, laboured with the agony of not knowing where the couple had gone.
'We joined hands and the chorus of our voices in calling for communities and law enforcement agencies to find the couple.
'Following the formation of the task team, more resources were allocated, leading to a breakthrough in the case.'
This resulted in the arrest of five suspects, three of who appeared in court on Wednesday.
'I am terribly sad. We held out hope that despite the number of days that the couple had gone missing, they would still be found alive. Our deepest condolences go out to the families of our brother and sister,' says Elijah Mhlanga, the chairperson of the African Media and Communicators Forum.
The NPC said it will be in court today, and the media application for access to cover the media will be heard.
The application was brought by the AMCF and NPC on behalf of the media houses.
'We are confident in the work of the authorities, that they will use all the available resources to bring to book everyone who was involved in the killing of our colleague and his partner,' says acting chairperson of the NPC Antoinette Slabbert.

Estcourt municipal employee found guilty of R5 million fraud
An employee of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, has been found guilty of fraud involving the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS). The worker, identified as Mr KZH Mchunu, was implicated in fraudulent motor vehicle licence disc renewal transactions amounting to over R5 million. The matter came to light during an internal disciplinary hearing, following investigations by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC). According to the RTMC, the transactions were conducted off-site using Mchunu's NaTIS login credentials. None of the money from these irregular transactions was deposited into the municipality's bank account. Mchunu faced charges of gross dishonesty, abuse of authority, and bringing the municipality into disrepute. He attempted to defend himself by claiming the NaTIS system had been hacked. However, RTMC's expert testimony dismissed this claim, confirming that there was no evidence of a system breach. In this case, only the accused's credentials were used,' the RTMC explained. The presiding officer concluded that Mchunu failed to account for how his confidential login details were allegedly leaked. He was found guilty on all charges. Neither the RTMC nor the municipality have disclosed the disciplinary sanctions or possible criminal proceedings to follow. White River murder case postponed as ballistic reports outstanding
Marco Schalekamp briefly appeared in the White River Magistrate's Court today, neatly dressed in a buttoned shirt and trousers, his neck cast removed. According to Lowvelder, the case was postponed to October 23 for further investigation, as the ballistic reports were not yet ready to be presented. State prosecutor Mbongeni Magagula told the court that the investigating officer, Sergeant Mxolisi Keis, confirmed that certain aspects, including video footage and recordings, still needed to be obtained. Schalekamp's attorney, Leendert Viljoen, asked the court if the defence could disclose its report, noting that forensic experts were also investigating the case. The state responded that it had not previously encountered such a request and indicated that an application of disclosure may be required for the defence to access the contents of the docket. Magistrate Sifiso Mabilane advised the defence to approach the High Court with such an application. Schalekamp stands accused of premeditated murder and attempted murder following the fatal shooting of Pieter Burger and the wounding of Arno van Niekerk near the White River Rugby Club in the early hours of June 5. Trio jailed for attempted murder of off-duty Amanzimtoti cop
The Durban Regional Court yesterday sentenced three men to 10 years' direct imprisonment for the attempted murder of an off-duty police officer. According to The Witness, the three – Ndabezinhle Mvune (29), Simiso Mthimkhulu (47) and Thamsanqa Msabala (29) – attempted to murder Captain Johannes Grotius in August 2021. Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said Grotius had been walking along Cato Crest Street in Amanzimtoti when he noticed a suspicious taxi with three occupants. He approached the vehicle intending to ask if they needed help. 'During the course, an altercation ensued, and one of the suspects hit the captain with a beer can. The captain picked it up and threw it back in the taxi. The three accused descended on the captain and severely assaulted him,' read the statement. Grotius sustained a fractured skull, brain bleeding, broken fingers and several lacerations to his face and body. His wife witnessed the incident, and he was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred for brain surgery. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, Grotius was medically boarded by SAPS, where he had been attached to the Air Wing Unit. 'In 2022, Mvune, Mthimkhulu and Msabala were arrested by Hawks members from the Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation. They were charged accordingly and appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court several times until they were found guilty on May 29,' said Mhlongo. The three were also declared unfit to possess firearms. KZN Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation head Major General Lesetja Senona welcomed the sentence and commended investigators for their work.
