AD Ports and Burjeel launch DOCKTOUR to transform healthcare logistics across Africa

ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)AD Ports Group and Burjeel Holdings have announced the launch of DOCKTOUR, a joint venture aimed at revolutionising healthcare delivery and logistics in Africa. The launch took place at the Make it in the Emirates forum, and was attended by Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology; Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Group; and Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Founder and Chairman of Burjeel Holdings.DOCKTOUR is envisioned as a full-spectrum platform that integrates logistics infrastructure, modular medical units, training, and emergency response into a unified ecosystem. Its primary objective is to support underserved communities across Africa by providing scalable, resilient healthcare solutions.'DOCKTOUR is about delivering impact where it's needed most,' said Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi. 'By combining our logistics strength with Burjeel's medical excellence, we are building a platform that can truly transform how healthcare is delivered in Africa.'The platform will build on Burjeel Holdings' existing operations and management expertise through its subsidiary Operonix, which has a track record of managing large-scale healthcare projects across the continent. It will also benefit from AD Ports Group's extensive infrastructure and footprint in Africa, including 34 terminals and a logistics fleet of 247 vessels.'DOCKTOUR represents a new model of impact,' said Dr Shamsheer Vayalil. 'It's a full-spectrum platform that integrates advanced clinical systems with logistics capability and operational scale. Our aim is to bring care, along with stability, readiness, and partnership, to the regions that need it most.'With a focus on agile deployment, DOCKTOUR will enable the setup of container-based hospitals, mobile clinics, and permanent field hospitals. It will also ensure real-time inventory tracking, timely medical supply deliveries, and robust emergency response capabilities. The initiative aligns with the UAE's broader humanitarian objectives by addressing gaps in critical care delivery during disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and post-crisis recovery.DOCKTOUR will also facilitate capacity-building in local communities through clinical training and educational initiatives, aiming to improve long-term health outcomes. It plans to establish regional medical offices to support healthcare logistics and explore opportunities in medical tourism.DOCKTOUR will also explore the establishment of medical offices across AD Ports Group's areas of operation in Africa to support a range of healthcare-related services, including medical logistics and medical tourism. In response to Africa's rising population and healthcare demands, DOCKTOUR will collaborate with national governments, regional health ministries, and international NGOs to implement programmes ranging from maternal and child care to disease surveillance and mobile health education.
The name 'DOCKTOUR' blends the words 'dock,' 'tour,' and 'doctor,' symbolising the mobility and accessibility of high-quality care enabled through logistics. The platform aims not only to serve immediate needs but to contribute to sustainable healthcare development and economic resilience across the continent.

UAE SMEs remain optimistic amid economic pressures, reveals RAKBANK index
Image: Getty Images/ For illustrative purposes Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the UAE are maintaining a steady sense of optimism despite rising costs and economic headwinds, according to RAKBANK's latest SME Confidence Index. The 2025 report, compiled in partnership with RFI Global, reflects a confidence score of 57, signalling continued resilience in the sector. The findings are based on responses from over 1,200 SMEs across the UAE, surveyed between October and December 2024. While the Index score has declined from 61 in 2023 to 57 in 2024, it remains above the base level of 50, pointing to overall positive sentiment. Also, 68 per cent of SMEs view the future business environment as favourable, and over 60 per cent reported revenue growth in the past two years. 'Small and medium enterprises are the backbone of every thriving economy, and in the UAE, they play a central role in driving diversification and sustainable development,' said Raheel Ahmed, group CEO of Ahmed added that the bank launched the SME Confidence Index in 2024 to capture sentiment, challenges and growth outlook. In a major move to support the SME ecosystem, RAKBANK and Emirates Development Bank announced a strategic Dhs1bn co-financing partnership during the 'Make it in the Emirates' forum, under the patronage of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology. Sector trends and challenges for SMEs Consumer and Retail Services emerged as the highest-performing sector, achieving a confidence score of 60, supported by increased consumer spending and expansion into new business channels. Construction and Manufacturing, Transport, and Trading sectors scored 57, 57, and 58 respectively, showing stable sentiment. However, confidence in Public Services and Professional Services dipped to 56, largely due to higher operating costs and concerns over debt servicing. While more than three in five SMEs recorded revenue increases over the past two years, over two-thirds experienced rising operational expenses. Only 39 per cent expressed confidence in meeting debt obligations, down from the previous year. The report found that smaller SMEs (with revenues up to Dhs30m) had a higher confidence score of 58, while larger SMEs (with revenues between Dhs30–100m) registered a lower score of 55. Digital and sustainable growth in focus Digital transformation continues to gain ground among UAE SMEs. Some 22 per cent now sell products or services online, while 45 per cent use digital banking channels monthly. In parallel, sustainability is becoming a growing priority, with 55 per cent of While navigating ongoing challenges — including the corporate tax regime introduced in 2024, demand for credit, and operational pressures — many SMEs are investing in technology, talent and market expansion to strengthen their competitive edge. 'The sector's forward-looking mindset is especially encouraging,' Ahmed noted. 'We're seeing increased focus on entering new markets, investing in talent, and modernising payment infrastructure. We see our role as a partner in that journey, providing not just financial solutions but also the advisory support needed to help them grow with confidence.'

Responsible e-waste disposal urged as Enviroserve, Tadweer boost recycling efforts

On World Environment Day, experts urged the public to ensure these gadgets are sent to trusted recyclers, emphasising the importance of responsible e-waste advance recycling efforts and boost the UAE's circular economy, Abu Dhabi's waste management entity Tadweer Group has acquired a 50% stake in Enviroserve - one of the world's largest e-waste recycling facilities - in on the public to pay close attention to e-waste in their households, Shashidhar Y S, Board Member and Managing Director at Enviroserve, spoke to Aletihad about the proper disposal of electronics."One of the most damaging myths is that old electronics are harmless if stored or discarded," Shashidhar said. But the truth is, improperly handled e-waste can pollute the environment and put data security at stake, he stressed."[This is why] they should use only certified recyclers like Enviroserve for proper disposal (which is traceable and safe)," Shashidhar is not just about disposal, he stressed, "it is about doing it right"."By choosing certified recyclers and taking responsibility for how we manage old devices, we can all help build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future."As technology advances, so does the complexity of e-waste, Shashidhar keep up with these shifts, Enviroserve is innovating its waste management by incorporating new technologies, including recycling EV batteries and smart devices, as well as recovering silicon from used solar panels-addressing the emerging waste challenges of the renewable energy sector, he added. Waste Management as Shared ResponsibilityThis World Environment Day, Tadweer Group urges the public to prioritise recycling and the proper disposal not only of e-waste but all other types of waste. "World Environment Day is a moment for all of us to pause and reflect on the role we play in protecting our planet. For us at Tadweer Group, it is a chance to remind the community that small changes can make a big difference, and show how working together leads to real environmental impact," Dr. Reem Al Kindi, Head of Public Awareness at Tadweer Group, told Aletihad . "The message we would like to convey is that waste is a valuable resource and we need to be more responsible with how we manage it – including incorporating the 3Rs in everything we do (reduce, reuse, recycle)." "Our objective is to divert 80% of waste from Abu Dhabi landfill by 2030, but we cannot do this alone-this relies in part on how the community segregates and sorts its waste."
