History of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations
Africa will have four teams at those finals, providing the 13 qualified teams with a giant carrot ahead of the pool stage draw that is scheduled for later this month.
To whet the appetite, here is a brief history of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 AFCON.
HOW IT STARTED
The TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations has a long history dating back 46 years but started as knockout competition to determine the qualifiers for what was then the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championships in Japan.
The first edition had 11 teams and was won by Algeria, who defeated Guinea on the away goals rule following a 4-4 draw on aggregate.
The first six editions were knockout competitions, before the first finals were played between six sides in Egypt in 1991. The hosts and Cote d'Ivoire contested the final, which was won 2-1 by the North African nation.
The finals have been staged every two years since then, and hosted all around the continent, including the likes of Mauritius (1993), Benin (2005), Zambia (2017) and Mauritania (2021).
PAST WINNERS
Seven-time winners Nigeria have been the most successful nation in the competition, though three of those have come since it was staged with a single host
Ghana and Egypt have four wins each, with no other nation managing to lift the trophy more than once after that.
Algeria (1979), Cameroon (1995), Morocco (1997), Angola (2001), Congo (2007), Zambia (2017), Mali (2019) and Senegal (2023) have all been previous winners.
MOST APPEARANCES AT THE FINALS
Nigeria and hosts Egypt will have each appeared at 19 tournaments when the 2025 edition is played.
Cameroon have been involved in 16 tournaments, one more than Ghana, who are fourth on the list. There will be two debutants in the field for 2025, with Sierra Leone and Kenya both appearing for the first time. Tanzania will be making their second appearances having first qualified in 2021.
SOME GREAT NAMES
Many current top players have passed through the TotalEnergies CAF U20 AFCON.
Premier League strikers Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest & Nigeria) and Patson Daka (Leicester City & Zambia), as well as Ligue 1 midfielders Krépin Diatta (Monaco & Senegal) and Lamine Camara (Monaco & Senegal) all played in recent tournaments.
Going further back, Baffour Gyan (Ghana), Emad Moteab (Egypt), Yaya Tourè (Côte d'Ivoire) and Benni McCarthy (South Africa) were also players who passed through the tournament.

Wesley Fofana Sparks Chelsea Exit Rumours
Rana Atef Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has fueled speculation over his future after deleting all Chelsea-related content from his official Instagram account, just days after Enzo Maresca's comments about the Frenchman's role in the squad. The Blues kicked off their Premier League season with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace, where Fofana was named on the bench but did not feature. Ahead of the match, Maresca made it clear that he intends to reintegrate the 24-year-old gradually following his long injury layoff. 'Wes was on the bench but was just on the bench to be with us and the plan was for him not to get any minutes,' Maresca explained. 'Now hopefully for the next one, we can use Wes for some minutes.' Despite this reassurance, Fofana's social media activity has raised doubts about his future at Stamford Bridge. Since joining from Leicester City for £70 million in 2022, his time at Chelsea has been plagued by serious injuries, limiting him to just 34 appearances across all competitions. French outlet reports suggest Marseille have emerged as a potential destination, with discussions around an initial loan move that could include an obligation to buy. The Ligue 1 side, who secured Champions League qualification, hold personal significance for Fofana, who has previously spoken about his admiration for the club. 'Olympique Marseille... we'll see one day,' Fofana said last year. 'I still have a contract until 2029, we'll see. Marseille is my city, my club, I am an OM supporter.' With the transfer deadline approaching, Fofana's drastic Instagram move has cast fresh uncertainty over whether his Chelsea chapter is nearing an early end. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated

Isak breaks silence on Newcastle saga: ‘The relationship can't continue' - World
Alexander Isak has gone public for the first time about his discontent at Newcastle, saying the club has broken promises and that 'the relationship can't continue.' The Sweden striker was the subject of a bid from Liverpool during the offseason and has been training away from the Newcastle squad, having indicated he wanted to explore his options. Isak was not involved in Newcastle's Premier League opener on Saturday, a goalless draw at Aston Villa. On Tuesday, the 25-year-old Isak, who scored 27 goals in 42 games for the Magpies last season, was named in the PFA team of the season for the Premier League and used a social media post expressing his gratitude to address his situation at Newcastle for the first time. 'I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,' Isak wrote. 'That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. 'The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To act now as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue.' Isak finished his post by saying: 'That's where things are for me right now — and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.' Newcastle responded with a statement saying: 'We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.' The Newcastle statement said the club wanted to keep its best players 'but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views.' 'As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired.' Isak joined Newcastle in 2022 from Spanish team Real Sociedad and has blossomed into one of the most sought-after strikers in the world. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said last week there was still a chance Isak could be reintegrated into the Newcastle squad, despite the difficult current situation. Howe said the offseason has been challenging given the absence of his star striker but that the squad has 'really come together in the latter stages of preseason.' Newcastle's statement said the club strived to 'retain our family feel.' 'Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.' With 23 goals in the Premier League last season, Isak was second in the scoring chart behind Liverpool's Mohamed Salah. Newcastle has been linked with a move for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, who also sat out the opening round of games.
