Surrey Mayor Calls For Terror Tag On Lawrence Bishnoi Gang, India Welcomes Move
Last Updated:
Brenda Locke described the gang as a transnational crime syndicate operating in Canada through local proxies and blamed it for murders & extortion targeting South Asian businesses
Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has formally urged the Canadian federal government to designate the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and other violent transnational networks as terrorist organisations under Canadian law.
In her statement, Locke described the Bishnoi gang as a transnational crime syndicate based in India but operating in Canada through local proxies. She said the gang is involved in murders, extortion, and threats targeting South Asian businesses in cities like Surrey, Brampton, and Calgary.
Top Indian intelligence sources, while welcoming the move, told CNN-News18 that the Bishnoi gang has a global network of over 700 operatives. 'The group uses encrypted messaging apps, cryptocurrency laundering, and social media to coordinate threats and extortion. A number of businesses in Canada have reportedly paid money under fear of violence, with 10 major extortion cases reported in Surrey alone in the last six months," they said.
The gang's Canada-based associate Goldy Brar, who publicly claimed responsibility for the murder of singer Sidhu Moose Wala, is also believed to be involved in drug trafficking and political violence across Canadian provinces.
The sources reiterated that several other violent networks operating from Canada are also working against Indian interests. These include Khalistani extremist groups such as Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), both of which remain active in Canada.
'These groups are believed to be involved in fundraising, recruitment, radicalisation of youth, and planning violence in India. Many of them operate under the front of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which has been accused of using political activism as a cover for extremist activities, including student recruitment and extortion-based financing."
Sikhs for Justice is a US-based separatist group that advocates for the creation of 'Khalistan', carved out from India's Punjab region. The Indian government has banned SFJ as an unlawful organisation due to its alleged involvement in inciting violence, radicalising youth, and promoting anti-India propaganda. Its founder, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, is considered a designated terrorist by Indian authorities.
Authorities have also linked these groups to drug and money-laundering networks involving Dubai-based operatives and connections to Mexican cartels and heroin smuggling via the UAE.
The Brothers Keepers, another Canadian street gang led by Maninder Singh Dhaliwal, has been implicated in extortion schemes targeting South Asian businesses in British Columbia.
Indian officials continue to press for international cooperation in dismantling these networks and protecting diaspora communities from organised criminal and extremist threats.

Navy staffer held for leaking Operation Sindoor details, other classified info to Pakistani handler
An Indian Navy staffer posted in naval headquarters in Delhi was arrested in Jaipur for allegedly leaking defence-related sensitive information to a Pakistani handler in exchange for money, a police official said on Thursday (June 26, 2025). Vishal Yadav, an Upper Division Clerk (UDC) in the Directorate of Dockyard at the Navy building, allegedly also shared details on Operation Sindoor — strikes carried out by the Indian Armed Forces in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Inspector General of Police (CID-Security) Vishnu Kant Gupta said Yadav, originally from Rewari in Haryana, leaked the classified information to a female Pakistani handler posing as an Indian woman. He was arrested on Wednesday in Jaipur and will be subjected to a joint probe by multiple agencies. "Yadav confessed to receiving approximately ₹2 lakh in total for the information he passed on," Mr. Gupta said. "This included ₹50,000 for leaking information related to Operation Sindoor," the IGP said, adding some of the payments were also made in cryptocurrency. Intelligence sources revealed that Yadav was first approached on Facebook. The Pakistani handler sent a friend request under the fake identity "Priya Sharma". The two started communicating regularly and eventually shifted to WhatsApp and later to Telegram, a platform known for its encryption-enabled messages. Police said that Yadav initially received small payments of ₹5,000-₹6,000 for lower-grade information. However, the handler allegedly encouraged him to provide more valuable intelligence in exchange for higher compensation. That's when Yadav began sharing critical defence-related data. "He was lured by money and ended up leaking sensitive information from the Navy headquarters," Mr. Gupta said. "After monitoring his social media activity and confirming his links with a Pakistani handler, he was detained in Jaipur for joint interrogation involving multiple national agencies," the IGP said. Yadav, originally from Punsika village in Haryana's Rewari district, is also reported to be addicted to online gaming, which authorities believe may have made him more vulnerable to such traps. Police said the forensic examination of Yadav's mobile phone reportedly uncovered extensive evidence, including financial transactions, sensitive messages, and confidential defence data exchanged with the handler. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are probing his cryptocurrency transactions and connections. IG Gupta emphasised that Pakistani intelligence agencies are using increasingly sophisticated methods to extract strategic information. "We are keeping a constant watch on such activities, and this arrest is a result of sustained monitoring and timely action," he said.

Pakistan-China Game Plan Foiled: Why India Refused To Sign SCO Joint Statement
Last Updated: Rajnath Singh's dissent at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meet signals India's growing resolve to call out terror sympathisers, even on multilateral platforms In a major geopolitical move, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's refusal to sign the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) joint statement has exposed deep divisions within the grouping, dealt a blow to China's leadership credibility, and derailed a coordinated strategic narrative pushed by Beijing and Islamabad. Singh is currently in China's Qingdao to attend the SCO Defence Ministers' meeting. The summit is being attended by member states, including Russia, Pakistan and China, to discuss issues related to regional and international security. This marks the first time in the history of SCO that a joint communique was not adopted, signalling a serious fracture in consensus. Intelligence sources tell CNN-News18 that India's dissent was not a procedural objection, but a calculated disruption of what was a China-Pakistan strategic objective to corner India diplomatically. Rajnath Singh refused to sign the joint statement because it made no mention of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 innocent lives, and failed to reflect India's strong position on terror. While skipping any mention of Pahalgam, the document mentioned Balochistan, tacitly accusing India of creating unrest there. Pahalgam's exclusion from the document appears to have been done at Pakistan's behest as its all-weather ally, China, currently holds the SCO Chair. What China And Pakistan Were Planning The plan was to reclaim victimhood by showcasing unrest in Balochistan as proof of India's interference, thereby justifying crackdowns, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings in the region. India's refusal effectively derailed this narrative offensive, sources said. Intelligence Dossiers, Satellite Proof Shared India had in advance shared intelligence dossiers and satellite imagery with SCO members, providing hard evidence of Pakistan's involvement in cross-border terrorism. These included updates on terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and proof of state complicity in sheltering terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Despite this, China, as chair of the summit, attempted to sideline India's terrorism narrative and position Pakistan as a responsible ally. According to intelligence sources, China has consistently resisted acknowledging India's right to defend its sovereignty or to call out Pakistan's terror record, even when presented with hard evidence. China In Pakistan's Trap? The exclusive inputs reveal that China has walked into Pakistan's double game. With a $62 billion investment in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) under threat from rising insurgency in Balochistan, China is now deflecting blame and pushing to internationalise Balochistan as a conflict zone, conveniently avoiding any conversation around Uyghur oppression and its own double standards on terrorism. On the other hand, Pakistan is desperate to avoid scrutiny over its terror infrastructure, especially in the wake of the Pahalgam attack, which drew sharp international attention. Intelligence sources say Islamabad wants to divert the global spotlight from its deepening terror links and India's Operation Sindoor, using SCO as a stage for a diplomatic cover-up. Strategic Disruption, Not Procedural Dissent India's refusal to sign the joint statement wasn't just procedural dissent, it was a strategic disruption, as per sources. The move ensured that Pakistan and China's joint narrative did not go unchallenged or get legitimised by consensus. With this, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has not only stalled a dangerous China-Pakistan diplomatic gambit, but also reinforced India's uncompromising position on terrorism, sovereignty, and regional integrity. The SCO's credibility has taken a hit. Its image as a consensus-driven body has been tarnished, and for the first time, its joint voice has been disrupted — a strong signal that India will not tolerate whitewashing of terrorism, even at multilateral forums. The OHE on the UP line towards Churchgate was repaired by 10:35 pm, over three and a half hours after the break, according to the Western Railway (WR) late at night. Measures were also taken to restore the OHE on the line towards Dahanu. The incident took place around 6:55 pm, causing significant delays and cancellations on the Vasai Road-Dahanu Road section. Hundreds of passengers were stranded at multiple suburban stations.
