Breakfast wines broken down: what to quaff with your croissant
A good meal paired with the right wine is like icing on a cake. But would you start the day with wine? While some frown upon alcohol before 5pm, others take a more relaxed view, especially when it comes to brunch.
Wine, or woi as it is called in the central German state of Hesse, is a must with a hearty Hessian breakfast. There, famous hotels offer sparkling wines with the breakfast buffet or à la carte dishes.
This tradition is by no means a new phenomenon. And the Metropolitan Hotel in New York had breakfast wines on its menu as early as 1859. But which wines are suitable for a special kind of breakfast at home?
'I use the term 'breakfast wine' – usually jokingly – for particularly fine wines, often with a sweet residue,' says Mark Barth, a representative of the Wein- und Sektgut Barth in Eltville-Hattenheim, Hesse, southwest Germany.. This wine is made for breakfast: translated into English, the name on the label is Breakfast Wine. It's made from a blend of gruener veltliner, riesling and Welschriesling grapes. Barth's first choice would clearly be a sparkling wine: 'A high-quality sparkling wine made using the traditional method. The carbon dioxide in sparkling wine is said to have an invigorating effect. In the morning, if you are tired, it can really boost your circulation.'

Hong Kong seems as stressed as ever in 2025, highlighted by my own ‘Bus Uncle' incident
Being scolded on a bus by a fellow passenger had not been on my agenda last weekend, but that is exactly what happened. A woman behind me had taken umbrage with my apparent slowness at boarding – except I had been waiting for the family ahead of me, who seemed confused about whether they wanted that bus. This led to my own hesitation, as I was not about to board first if they were actually going to get on – the Brit in me recoiled at coming across as a queue-jumper. Regardless, the woman berated me for looking at my phone and 'having my head in the clouds' before storming off to the upper deck, leaving a miasma of angry disapproval in her wake. Obviously, I proceeded to post about it on my Instagram stories, because I found it funny that this woman was flipping out over nothing – did we not, in the end, both still get on the bus? And, despite my clear and blatant disregard for her time, was her journey not still unimpeded? The episode brought to my mind a far older, more well-known bus incident. Nearly two decades ago, a rather put-out 'uncle' was filmed sounding off against a fellow passenger on a public bus in Hong Kong. Much of what he said cannot be published in this newspaper, but a few of his choice sentences – such as 'You have stress, I have stress!' and 'It's not settled!' – have since become catchphrases in the city.

Who is Heather Graham's boyfriend John De Neufville? The Chosen Family and Austin Powers actress hasn't been shy in sharing snaps of her beau, who's a Guinness world record-holding snowboarder
Actress Heather Graham says her latest film, Chosen Family, (which she both stars in and directs) is about what happens when a reformed people pleaser like her says no. 'I wanted to take some things in my life that I had found hard and painful and turn it into comedy,' she told The Guardian last month. Her new-found confidence is often evident in photos she posts on Instagram too. After spending the Christmas holidays learning how to ski from her snowboarder boyfriend John De Neufville, she shared snaps of her getaway to Jackson, Wyoming. One of the pictures featured Graham showing off her toned body, wearing a blue string bikini in a hot tub. Another showed her snuggling close to her man. 'Before, I was more: 'What do other people think?' Now I'm just like, f*** it,' she told The Guardian. Advertisement Heather Graham is an actress. Photo: @imheathergraham/Instagram 'Happy New Year! Here's what to know about John De Neufville. He's a snowboarder Unlike Graham's previous relationships with high profile Hollywood actors, this time she has chosen someone much more low-key. While not much is known about John De Neufville's work except that he is a snowboarder, he has been spotted on several getaways with Graham since they began dating in 2022.

How pioneering Pilates studio in Hong Kong lasted the course and stretched to expand
It is no easy feat for a fitness studio to have survived years of Hong Kong's high rents, the 2019 anti-government protests and a pandemic, but that is exactly what Heather Thomas' Flex Studio has done. Advertisement Flex Studio opened in 2005 in Stanley, in the south of Hong Kong Island. Today the Pilates studio has two Hong Kong branches, in Wong Chuk Hang and Central, and one in Singapore. Around 900 clients visit one of the three studios two to three times a week. When Flex Studio first launched, Pilates was virtually unheard of in Hong Kong. 'I had to constantly explain to people that it is not yoga,' Thomas says. Back then, there were only three other centres in the city offering Pilates classes. Heather Thomas is the founder of Flex Studio in Hong Kong. Thomas earned her Pilates certification in 2002. Photo: Edmond So Pilates was created in the early 20th century by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates . He developed the eponymous exercise regime during the first world war for his fellow internees at an internment camp. Advertisement It gained popularity in the 1920s in New York after Pilates was introduced there. His original teachings, which consist of specific movements done in a sequence he devised, are referred to as 'classical Pilates'.
