Slovenia boss Kolman still keeping an eye out for old friend Jim McGuinness
In advance of the game, the manager attributed his self-belief to a meeting with Jim McGuinness at Celtic over a decade ago.
The Donegal manager was working as a performance consultant with the Glasgow giants, while Kolman spent some time at the Bhoys' academy.
'We were talking after the game on WhatsApp,' Kolman revealed. 'He saw a headline from when I spoke to him at Celtic in 2013, that I thought I was going to 'conquer the world'.
'He said, 'Saša, you took it literally!' And I said, 'Well, you told me so!' 'It's not very often that we talk, but it is a really nice relationship.
'No contact since Koper. He's in his business, and I am in mine. It has been pretty hectic with four international games in four months, but maybe I will hear from him tomorrow again.'
Their friendship has made a GAA fan out of Kolman.
'I just follow Donegal. Because of Jim. I didn't watch (against Cavan) because we were on the way here, but I've been reading about it. They smashed them.
'I was pretty sad when he decided to go back because I really thought that he has a big future in football. Well, maybe he still has. Wherever he is, he's doing a fantastic job.'
Kolman also complimented the facilities at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
'It's a fantastic stadium. Even when we were driving here, everybody was looking outside the window. We would just wish that we would have facilities like that one day in Slovenia. Maybe one day.'
As for their rematch, Kolman is targeting another statement win. However, he knows Ireland will provide a different challenge this time around.
'That game in Koper changed Ireland more than they changed us. For sure, they took something out of it. They look very good, very compact.
'We will play to win, but we know who we are playing against. The first game doesn't mean anything. We know Ireland are still the favourites, the best team in the group, so we need to show character again.
'To finish six from six, that would make a huge statement in Slovenia.'

Surprise Roy Keane reaction to daughter and Prem star dating as pregnancy shared
Roy Keane is preparing to become a grandfather for the fourth time as his daughter Leah has announced she's expecting her first baby with fiancé Taylor Harwood-Bellis. The pair have been together for quite some time, and following their engagement announcement last year, they're now anticipating an exciting new arrival to their family. Keane has previously displayed a gentler aspect to his tough-guy persona when speaking about Leah's romance with Harwood-Bellis, who boasts 34 Premier League appearances for Southampton but is now back down in the Championship. The ex-Manchester United legend spoke about his future son-in-law during a Nations League clash between England and Ireland – where the defender found the net against his father-in-law's homeland. The Three Lions emerged victorious 5-0 at Wembley in November 2024, with Harwood-Bellis – a Premier League talent at the time – scoring the final goal via a thunderous header. As Keane featured in the ITV studio to analyse the match, he said: "It's bittersweet for me, this." Following mention of the Southampton player's engagement to Keane's daughter, he playfully joked: "It's not done and dusted yet. Things can change very quickly in the Keane household, let me tell you!" After this cheeky jibe, the Premier League icon went on to praise his new family member's performance for England and his overall showing in the top flight. Keane added: "He's got a goal threat in him, even playing for Southampton. It's nice for him. He's a nice kid, his family's done a good job." Now Roy's baby is having a baby herself (Image: INSTAGRAM/officialkeane16) Now, the 54-year-old has Harwood-Bellis to thank as he prepares to become a grandfather for the fourth time, having welcomed his third grandchild in April. Daughter Leah revealed the news on social media, sharing a video that showed the pair getting ready for their bundle of joy's arrival. Leah wrote alongside the post: "Half of me, half of you," and included numerous clips of herself with the current Championship player. The footage opens with Leah displaying her multiple positive pregnancy tests, followed by what appears to be the moment she tells her partner the thrilling news, as he lifts her into an affectionate hug whilst they celebrate. Additional clips show the duo attending scans, collecting photographs of their unborn child to present to the camera and close relatives, plus brief glimpses of old footage that appears to show the pair during their own childhood years. Harwood-Bellis' team Southampton – who currently compete in the Championship following last season's relegation – responded to the announcement, writing: "Congratulations both!" Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email alerts Numerous other congratulatory messages poured into the comments section, and whilst Roy has not yet responded to the upcoming arrival, the beloved pundit is presumably thrilled by the news, like everyone else. The couple revealed their engagement just last year, with Harwood-Bellis proposing aboard a yacht cruising along Italy's Amalfi Coast. Photographs of the romantic and memorable proposal were subsequently posted online, with Leah writing: "I can't wait to marry you." It's likely that the defender secured Keane's approval before proposing – a prospect that would terrify most people. Potential in-laws can be challenging to win over, but having one of football's most fearsome figures as your new family member would surely send shivers down anyone's spine. The former Premier League star proposed to Leah in Italy last year (Image: Instagram/tayhbellis_) Nevertheless, Keane appears to reserve his gentle and tender side for his loved ones. He revealed on The Tommy Tiernan Show last year that being surrounded by women at home is "brilliant." When questioned about the toughest aspect of raising daughters, Keane said: "No it is, brilliant. They're good, very good kids. No, they're OK. Listen when they get a bit older, I suppose boyfriends and that type of carry on, yeah that can be," before trailing off as the audience chuckled. The former United legend maintained he was quite laid-back when meeting his children's partners – including Harwood-Bellis – adding: "You'd be very surprised. Surely that's the same for everybody."

New Clare GAA manager vows to ‘support the players' amid Munster SFC format fall-out as he sounds off on strike threat
Four counties came out swinging against the controversial change NO SEED OF DOUBT New Clare GAA manager vows to 'support the players' amid Munster SFC format fall-out as he sounds off on strike threat NEW Clare football boss Paul Madden is prepared to back his players amid the fall-out over the decision to seed the Munster SFC. Representatives from the Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford panels have voiced their opposition to the move, which will ensure Kerry and Cork are kept on opposite sides of the provincial draw for 2026. 2 Paul Madden has been appointed Clare football manager Credit: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile 2 He gave his thoughts on the controversial change to the Munster senior football championship Credit: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile They are now 'evaluating potential next steps in response', as outlined in a statement issued by the Gaelic Players Association. And former Banner ace Podge Collins claimed it is a 'very realistic' possibility that those counties will refuse to partake in the provincial championship as a means of protest. Madden is currently in the process of putting together a backroom team, having had his appointment as successor to Peter Keane announced on Tuesday night. He told SunSport: 'We're in Division 3 and it's going to be a fairly steep learning curve for me and whoever comes in with me. 'I would hope to have people involved who have been there and done it before. 'There's obviously a lot of controversy around the seeding for the Munster Championship next year and it is what it is. I support the players in their viewpoint. From my perspective, if we're scheduled to play a game, we'll turn up to play that game and we'll go out to win it, whoever it may be against.' Clare's journey to a fourth consecutive Munster final, as well as a place in the revamped All-Ireland series, could potentially be made more hazardous by the new seeding system. On the prospect of strike action, Madden said: 'I'll have to speak to the players first as I'm still only beginning to settle into the role. 'I think at this stage, the format is laid out for 2026 and I don't think it's going to change, whether we sit out and protest or not. 'My job will be to prepare the team as best I can for every game we play. And I'd like us to play as many games as we can. Inside Sharlene Mawdsley's 'delicious' yet atypical Tenerife holiday with GAA star boyfriend Mikey Breen 'If we go out and get promoted from Division 3, we won't have to worry about anything. 'But from the players' perspective, the four counties are really disappointed by the ruling. 'The Clare players are obviously the ones I'm concerned about and if they have a very strong opinion on something, I'll certainly do my best to support that wherever I can.' Following consecutive one-year reigns under outside managers, supporters will hope that the appointment of a Clare man is a step towards long-term stability. Keane took charge for 2025 following the departure of fellow Kerry native Mark Fitzgerald. Madden, who led Éire Óg Ennis to three Clare SFC titles before stepping down at the end of last season, has been handed a three-year term. He said: 'I obviously would have had dealings with Mark Fitzgerald and Peter Keane because we had maybe between seven and ten players from Éire Óg on the county panels. 'I had a number of conversations with Peter Keane over the last 12 months, certainly at the start of his tenure. They're both really good football guys. Good guys with huge experience. 'Look, the reality is that coming to another county with huge travel involved, it's going to be a challenge. 'I know county managers cite that as a reason why they depart, but it is a factor. 'There are positives coming from outside as well because you can get into your car and go home, so you don't have to listen to criticism that may come your way. But that's all part and parcel of it. 'For me personally as a Clare man, I'm honoured and delighted to be chosen to take on this role and I'll endeavour to give it my best shot. 'I do believe that there's a cohort of talented footballers within the county and that there's a very good structure in place in the underage systems. 'That means there'll be a continuous conveyor belt of talent coming through for the years to come — I'm fairly convinced of that.'
