Ten Hag makes successful debut after Bayer Leverkusen wins 4-0 in German Cup
Patrik Schick, Brazilian wing back Arthur, debutant Christian Kofane and Álex Grimaldo all scored, but they assumed control only after Großaspach captain Volkan Celikwas was sent off in the 66th with two bookings in as many minutes.
Leverkusen was forced to defend for long periods after Schick's 32nd-minute opener. The Czech forward also needed to clear the ball off the line.
Arthur scored the second shortly after Celikwas' sending off and the other goals followed Mert Tasdelen's late sending off for a bad challenge on Leverkusen defender Axel Tape.
Ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, took over from the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso and has had little time to work with a squad undergoing huge changes. Key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Xhaka have left while Kofane, Tape, Ibrahim Maza, Jarell Quansah and goalkeeper Mark Flekken all made their debuts on Friday.
The game was interrupted in the first half by a summer storm featuring hailstones. Referee Michael Bacher led the teams off the field. It resumed after a 40-minute break.
Also, Union Berlin routed Gütersloh, another fourth-tier side, 5-0 away, and second-division Magdeburg enjoyed a 3-1 win at third-division Saarbrücken.
Union used dead-ball situations to take a 3-0 halftime lead, with Robert Skov firing in a free kick, and Leopold Querfeld and Danilho Doekhi scoring after corners.
Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow had to go off early in the second half after indicating he was feeling dizzy. Matheo Raab went on for his Union debut but had little to do as Andrej Ilić scored and then set up Jeong Woo-yeong to complete the rout.

Bears will play their starters in the final preseason game
The Bears will play their starters in the preseason finale Friday night against the Chiefs. Bears coach Ben Johnson told Kay Adams on Up & Adams that Caleb Williams and the rest of the team's healthy starters will play. "We'll go ahead, and we'll play," Johnson said. Stetson starts new era with Jasper
The Stetson football program begins the 2025 season under new head coach Michael Jasper. Jasper spent three seasons as an offensive lineman in the NFL and hopes to jumpstart this Hatters program. Stetson went 2-9, 0-7 in the Pioneer Football League in 2024 and they have been picked to finish last out of eleven teams this season. The Hatters have almost fifty freshmen on their roster, but they have plenty of talent to have a bounce back season. Auburn claims 4 additional 'national championships' on its football resume
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn is claiming four additional football national titles and will call itself a nine-time champion moving forward. The Tigers, for decades, boasted titles in 1957 and 2010. They also claimed the 1913, 1983 and 1993 seasons as meeting national championship qualifications. Now, though, athletic director John Cohen is adding titles from 1910, 1914, 1958 and 2004 to the program's resume. It's laudable by some and laughable by others. 'For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history — choosing to recognize only Associated Press national championships,' Cohen told On3 for a story announcing the decision Tuesday. 'Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches and teams from Auburn's proud history. 'Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA's official record book and our peers across the nation.' The Associated Press, which began handing out its annual national championship trophy in 1936, credits Auburn with two titles: 1957 and 2010. Banners recognizing those seasons hang inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. The other titles Auburn is claiming have varying degrees of validity. For example, the Bowl Championship Series existed in 2004, and the Tigers failed to make the title game. They finished 12-0 and third in the rankings behind undefeated USC and undefeated Oklahoma.
