Reasi (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 6 (ANI): Security has been heightened in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit, with authorities increasing inspections and vigilance, particularly in Katra city of Reasi district.
On Thursday, security forces also conducted extensive checks in the Ramban district, utilising dog squads and carrying out thorough vehicle inspections. Security was additionally heightened at Udhampur Railway Station to ensure safe movement ahead of the Prime Minister's arrival.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister Jitendra Singh visited the Katra railway station and inspected the Vande Bharat trains scheduled to be launched.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, 'If I tell you that I have been waiting for this moment for a long time, it will still not be enough. This rail project began when I was in the 7th or 8th class. Now, even my children have started working after completing school and college. But, better late than never...tomorrow PM will inaugurate the Vande Bharat services and it will benefit us...whenever highway gets blocked, the airlines start selling tickets of Rs 5,000 for Rs 20,000, such issues will be solved from now on.'
Union Minister Jitendra Singh said, 'In 2014, when PM Modi took oath as PM, the work on this bridge had almost stopped. There were controversies about the tallest bridge in the world as well, whether it would be possible to build such a bridge and whether it would be safe. There would be ease of travel and ease of business. Within 3 hours, you can reach Srinagar from here. The rush on the highway will reduce. This will become a part of Viksit Bharat.'
The Northern Railway announced the commencement of regular services of the Vande Bharat Express trains between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, which will start on June 7.
The services will operate six days a week, enhancing connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the prominent pilgrimage destination.
Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Jammu and Kashmir today and inaugurate several projects, including the Chenab bridge, the Anji bridge, and flag off Vande Bharat trains.
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the Chenab bridge and visit the bridge deck at around 11 am. Thereafter, he will visit and inaugurate the Anji bridge.
PM Modi will flag off Vande Bharat Trains at around noon. Thereafter, he will lay the foundation stone, inaugurate and dedicate to the nation multiple development projects worth over Rs 46,000 crore at Katra.
The Prime Minister will also dedicate the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation. The Prime Minister will also flag off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar and back.
Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various road projects. He will lay the foundation stone of the road widening project from Rafiabad to Kupwara on National Highway-701 and the construction of Shopian bypass road on NH-444 worth over Rs 1,952 crore. He will also inaugurate two flyover projects at Sangrama Junction on National Highway-1 in Srinagar and at Bemina Junction on National Highway-44. These projects will ease traffic congestion and enhance traffic flow for the commuters.
The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra, worth over Rs 350 crore. It will be the first medical college in the Reasi district, contributing substantially to the healthcare infrastructure in the region.
Notably, this will be Prime Minister Modi's first visit to the territory after 'Operation Sindoor' - India's precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. (ANI)

Farooq Abdullah takes ride in Kashmir's Vande Bharat train, says will boost tourism

Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and president of the ruling National Conference (NC), Dr Farooq Abdullah, said on Tuesday that the train service to Kashmir Valley will boost tourism and the local economy. Dr Farooq Abdullah said this after boarding the Vande Bharat train from Srinagar to Katra. He told reporters before boarding the train, 'I am very happy that I am travelling by this train to Katra today. It has been the biggest benefit for us.' He said that since the train service connects Kashmir with the rest of the country, it will boost tourism as well as the local economy. 'It is a reliable transport link for the people of the Valley. The road between Srinagar and Jammu gets closed sometimes, and the airlines start fleecing the people by jacking up the prices. With this train, people will be saved from that. This will also prove to be beneficial to the horticulture sector in Kashmir as the produce will reach the markets faster', he said. After reaching Katra, he could not hide his happiness and said, "I'm so happy that tears welled up in my eyes. Has that day really come when I can travel from Kashmir to the rest of India by train?... I want to congratulate all the workers and engineers who built the highest railway bridge in India...' He was accompanied by several party colleagues, who joined his journey from Srinagar to Katra town of Reasi district in Jammu division. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vande Bharat train service from Katra to Srinagar on June 6. The Vande Bharat train takes three hours to reach Katra from Srinagar and vice versa. The railway link also includes the Anji cable-stayed railway bridge, which is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. The Vande Bharat train has been especially designed for the weather and topography of the region. It offers a modern and enhanced travel experience with features like fast acceleration, a high-speed operation of up to 160 km/hr, and a range of amenities. These include comfortable seating, mobile charging sockets, onboard catering and enhanced safety features. 'Post vacant for 2 LS terms': Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge writes to PM Modi; presses for election of Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker

Congress president Kharge and PM Modi (File photo) NEW DELHI: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge , who is also the Rajya Sabha leader of opposition, wrote to PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday, urging him to appoint the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker from among the members of the principal opposition party. Highlighting the vacant status of the position for the two consecutive Lok Sabha terms, Kharge said this "does not augur well for India's democratic polity and is also in violation of well-laid-out provisions of the Constitution". "From the First to the Sixteenth Lok Sabha, every House has had a Deputy Speaker. By and large, it has been a well-established convention to appoint the Deputy Speaker from among the members of the principal opposition party," Kharge wrote on X with a letter he wrote to the PM. He further wrote: "No Deputy Speaker was elected during the Seventeenth Lok Sabha, and this concerning precedent continues in the ongoing Eighteenth Lok Sabha." The Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha is a key constitutional position in India's lower house of Parliament. The Deputy Speaker is elected by the members of the Lok Sabha, usually from among themselves, soon after the Speaker is elected. The primary role of the Deputy Speaker is to preside over the proceedings of the Lok Sabha in the absence of the Speaker and to ensure the smooth conduct of the House. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 180k traders trust IC Markets for CFD trading | Sign up today IC Markets Learn More Undo The Deputy Speaker has the same powers as the Speaker when presiding, including maintaining order, deciding on points of order, and managing debates. Importantly, the Deputy Speaker is expected to function in a non-partisan manner, similar to the Speaker, despite being elected from a political party. Traditionally, this post is often offered to a member of the opposition or another party to maintain a balance, although this is not mandated by the Constitution. The position is significant for upholding the parliamentary process and ensuring continuity in the functioning of the Lok Sabha when the Speaker is unavailable. The last Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha in India was M. Thambi Durai from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). He served as the Deputy Speaker during the 16th Lok Sabha (2014–2019).

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has outlined the future of the Indian transport system in major cities of the country, which will have an air pod system and flash-charging electric buses. These transportation initiatives will ease the problem of traffic congestion, bringing relief to the residents from long, tiring journeys. Detailing the government's plan in this direction, Gadkari said that a pod system in the air is being planned along the Dhaula Kuan-Manesar route. 'We want to start a pod system in the air from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar because there is a lot of traffic on this road," the Union Minister told news agency ANI. He also underlined that a similar study is being carried out in Bengaluru – a city which is infamous for its long traffic congestion, particularly during rainfall. #WATCH | When asked about 'flying buses', Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says, '…We want to start a pod system in the air from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar because there is a lot of traffic on this road. A pod-based transport system consists of small, driverless electric vehicles that run on raised tracks by either hanging from rails above or running on top of them. They are similar to on-demand taxis, wherein one can call a pod when in need and transit from one place to another without any stoppage. A pod can carry around five to six people. Gadkari said that the government has started a flash-charging electric bus in Nagpur, which has 135 seats. This bus will run at a speed of 120 km/h and will stop for 30 seconds to recharge and run again. 'We have also started a flash-charging electric bus in Nagpur with 135 seats. This bus will be executive class with TVs in front. It will run on the road to Nagpur. The bus will have a speed of 120 kmph. It will stop for 30 seconds after every 40 kilometres, people will get off and get on. The bus will get charged in 30 seconds and will start again…The bus will be less expensive because it will require less battery power," he detailed, highlighting that the fare on such buses will be 30% lower compared to diesel buses. Upon successful completion of the initiative in Nagpur, the government will roll out the same buses from Delhi to Jaipur, Delhi to Dehradun, Bangalore to Chennai, Mumbai to Nashik, and Pune, the Minister announced.
