Jericho Rosales To Star In TBA Studios' Biopic Of Former Philippines President Manuel L. Quezon

Yahoo18-02-2025
EXCLUSIVE: Philippine production and distribution company TBA Studios has cast Jericho Rosales to play the title role in its upcoming historical biopic Quezon.
Rosales will play Manuel L. Quezon, the Filipino lawyer and soldier who went on to become the President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944.

The film serves as Rosales' long-awaited return to Philippine cinema after a hiatus of several years; he was last seen on the big screen in 2018 romantic drama The Girl In The Orange Dress. On television, he recently starred in the hit ABS-CBN drama Lavender Fields.
Scheduled to start filming in March 2025, Quezon is directed and co-written by Jerrold Tarog, whose credits include the historical biopics Heneral Luna (2015) and Goyo: The Boy General (2018), both also produced by TBA Studios.
Also starring in Quezon are Mon Confiado and Benjamin Alves, who reprise their roles from Heneral Luna and Goyo: The Boy General. Confiado returns as Quezon's political rival, Emilio Aguinaldo, while Alves portrays a younger Manuel L. Quezon.
The Quezon cast also includes Karylle Yuzon, who will play Quezon's wife, Aurora Quezon; Romnick Sarmenta, playing Sergio Osmeña, the first Vice President of the Philippines; JC Santos as Manuel Roxas; and Cris Villanueva as the older Joven Hernando, the only fictional character in the film series. More casting announcements are expected soon.
'I feel so honored to be with this team. Coming to a script like this which is so potent and so entertaining, I feel so lucky and happy,' said Rosales. 'Here, you will see Quezon as a person. He's not written as a hero. He is cunning, he is charming, he is intelligent.
'Quezon is such an interesting character to play; there are so many things I can put into the role to build Quezon as a character. That adds to the pressure, but at the same time I am very excited.'
TBA Studios President and COO Daphne Chiu said: 'We are honored to welcome Jericho Rosales as he leads the cast of Quezon. Jericho's unbelievable screen presence has made him one of our best actors today, and we're all looking forward to working with him and seeing how his artistry can give life to one of the country's most charismatic yet divisive political figures.'
TBA Studios is also a leading distributor in the Philippines, releasing films such as Everything, Everywhere All At Once, Past Lives and Triangle Of Sadness.

Alan Tudyk Says He Was Removed From ‘I, Robot's Press Materials After Testing Higher Than Will Smith In Early Screenings: 'I Was Very Upset'

Alan Tudyk reflected on his career and revealed that there's a reason why not many people know he played Sonny in the 2004 sci-fi action film I, Robot. During an appearance on Toon'd In with Jimmy Cummings, Tudyk said that with test screening audiences, he tested higher than the film's star Will Smith. 'And then I was gone. I was gone. There was no publicity and my name was not mentioned.' He continued, 'I was so shocked, I was like, 'But wait, nobody's going to know that I [play the robot].'' Tudyk voiced Sonny the robot and was motion-captured for the CGI character, saying that he 'put a lot into' his performance, adding, 'At the time, I was very upset.' Directed by Alex Proyas, I, Robot is set in Chicago 2035 as robots fill public service positions around the world. Will Smith plays Detective Del Spooner as he investigates the death of the U.S. Robotics founder, who believes that Sonny the robot murdered him. The film also stars Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, James Cromwell, Chi McBride, Shia LaBeouf, Fiona Hogan, Terry Chen, Adrian L. Ricard, Jerry Wasserman, Peter Shinkoda, Emily Tennant, and David Haysom. Will Cate Blanchett Star in a ‘Squid Game' US Spin-Off?

Ever since that shocking Squid Game season 3 ending, fans have been talking about the possibility of a US spin-off series starring Cate Blanchett (and helmed by David Fincher). And though Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously revealed to Variety that Cate's cameo in the series finale was 'not related' to the rumored spin-off, the actress is now weighing in on her future with the franchise. When asked about starring in an English-language spin-off or sequel series, Cate told Variety she is 'wildly open to anything,' adding, 'I mean, I'd love to work with David [Fincher] again. It's been ages. But no, I don't know anything more than you do. I'm not being coy. I really don't.' Way back in October 2024—long before the Squid Game series finale aired—Deadline reported that a brand-new spin-off was being developed for Netflix with David Fincher at the helm of the project. However, little else has been heard about the project since in June 2025, Hwang Dong-hyuk said he hadn't 'heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game.' But fret not, because the Squid Game creator is open to the possibly of a spin-off series. As he told Entertainment Weekly, 'I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spin-offs or sequels altogether because they say never say never.' And from the sound of it, Cate is down as chances are, even if she did know anything about a sequel series, she wouldn't be allowed to share any deets. While speaking about her Squid Game cameo with Variety (which she apparently landed 'out of the blue'), Cate noted how everything she learned about her role 'was on a need-to-know basis.' As she explained, 'I got a couple of storyboards. I had to [learn to] play the game very quickly. I had to practice and practice. I knew there were four or five setups that they were going to do, and I knew what they needed from every shot, and then I was given the sides. But it was one of the more mysterious jobs.'

Alison Brie Wants to Make a Return to ‘Scream'

Denzel Washington is keeping quiet about his Black Panther 3 role. David S. Goyer teases the origins of the Blob for its new remake. Plus, the stars of Resident Alien hope for a movie to cap off the series. Spoilers, away! When asked by Screen Rant about his rumored role in Black Panther 3, Denzel Washington only answered, 'That's between me and [director] Ryan [Coogler].' During her recent appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast (via Deadline), Alison Brie stated she, too, is open to reprising her late character in a new Scream movie but believes the 'core four' characters of the last two films 'need to die' already. I hear tons of people are coming back. … I mean, Hayden [Panettiere] came back in [Scream] 6. Too many people live. The 'core four' needs to die. We killed [Jamie Kennedy's Randy Meeks] in Scream 2. We should be down to two of the 'core four,' just by Scream 7. During a recent interview with Comic Book, David S. Goyer, co-writer of the upcoming Blob remake, stated the titular monster would be 'made in the lab,' the same as it was revealed to be in the 1980s version, though with the added wrinkle of 'AI and gene editing and the slippery slope all that work entails.' One of the decisions we made is instead of the Blob coming from space, it's something that is made in the lab. Speaking of the 1980s Blob, here's an unusual clip from Chuck Russell's upcoming Witchboard remake courtesy of Bloody-Disgusting. A sleepwalker may be host to a demonic entity in the trailer for Dream Eater, a found-footage horror movie coming to theaters this October 24. During a recent interview with TV Line, Chris Sheridan confirmed there's 'definitely' a possibility for future Resident Alien movies at USA. When I got the official call that they weren't going to continue the show, I did ask about that. I asked Michael Sluchan (who's running Versant and heads up the USA folk) if, down the line, a movie of some sort or something, if they'd be open to it. He said yes. They've done a bunch of movies over there. They've done a few Psych movies. They've done a Monk movie. I asked them if they would consider doing one for us and they said definitely. You can't launch a movie next week, but you wait a couple of years and I think the audience will still be there for it. I know very much the cast would love to come back and do something and I would definitely be open to that. The story we set out to tell originally in the pilot, we have now finished telling, but it doesn't mean there's not more story to tell. Harry left in the last episode. When I had the choice of whether to have him leave or stay, I decided to have him leave for a couple of reasons, but one of them was, if he leaves, then it's a great kick off if we do do a movie or something like that. Harry returns with some problem and people have to adjust. So I wouldn't be surprised if there's a movie or some sort in the future. Alan Tudyk echoed his statements, adding he has hopes for a crossover with the Predator franchise. I would be open to a future of Resident Alien past this incarnation on Syfy and USA [Network]. I've been joking that Resident Alien vs. Predator would make an entertaining movie. You could do a mash-up there! I know that Predator seems to be having a resurgence, so I don't know how willing they would be to mash-up with us. But there's any number of stories you could tell, and who knows what the business is going to be doing. I think it just comes down to that. The reason we're leaving is because the business is shifting, changing and figuring itself out for a minute. And when it figures itself out, if it gives us a call, we'll pick up. Want more io9 news?
